It's a tough call. Academic freedom is supposed to protect controversial research and ideas. It's not supposed to give a license to profs to spout off on their politics, especially when it's outside their area of expertise.

That's an important distinction. The question is what system should be in place (if any) to help professors stay on the proper side of it.
