I don't understand this post. Is you point that the White House announcement reflects how pinned and wriggling they are?
We're viewing this from different perspectives, with you being an actively involved molecule in the boiling pot, and me listening to you trying to sound the steam whistle from the next room. (That was satisfying...) But as a non-scandal-follower, my reaction to the Bush administration's announcement was that they are taking this seriously and demonstrating that they won't tolerate this behavior. It seemed appropriate and just. To me it seemed that any delay was likely to be related to the natural time it takes for things to get processed, and the reasonable skepticism the administration might have had about the political motivations of the accusers. But then they processed it and reacted appropriately.
I grant that maybe I'm out of the loop, but it seems possible also that you could be too in the loop...

No. I was just remarking on what seemed to me the, shall we say, eagerness, of the reporters to make sure that they put on the record that the White House has conceded that the charges are serious. Pinning them down, so to speak.
The wriggling was my read of McClellan's painful press conferences: shifty discomfort.
