Thank you for reminding me of why I gave up on vegetarianism, and why I gave up on reading letters to the editor.
On the subject of whether we need anything but frying, though, I nominate grilling. Outdoors, open flame, charcoal -- just as good as deep fried anything.
Yes indeed, grilling is wonderful. We've been grilling once or twice a week this summer and are amazed each time at how good food tastes off a grill. Still, I don't feel right unless I have something fried every few days.
While I appreciate that you at least put the word "liberal" in quotes, why is this view even associated with liberalism? I just don't see it. Perhaps the fight for the smoking ban in public spaces was a liberal agenda (I don't know) but if it were so, it would not be because it is the liberal agenda to dictate what individuals do. Smoking is a public health hazard. If one is to say that "liberalism" is in the business of dictating delimiting individual rights, then why is it that the decriminalization of marijuana and, certainly less talked about but I think it's fair to say, prostitution are also seen as liberal agendas? We could include the right of choice here, from the abortion argument. (Not that we support these things as good, but it just seems out of place for the government to criminalize them) The writer makes the case that obesity has resulted in an economic strain, but, so is the case for welfare, another of those lefty ideas. I do not see any association with that craziness and leftism of any sort.
