Both fair game and a compliment, but I have to say it's a very strange ploy: "Clark's so bad that he says nice things about evil Republicans. So vote Republican. Brought to you by the Republican Party."
Anyhow, the comments were made on the rubber chicken speaking circuit, which undercuts their relevance pretty sharply.
You just have to listen to the chickens very, very closely. They mostly mumble under their breath.
You're right - it is an attempt to make him seem opportunistic and unprincipled, and it's worked with a contingent of frequent posters at dKos and elsewhere.
You're not going to call this a smear, are you? I think it's overblown but fair game (assuming it's true that there's videotape).

Did I call it a smear Mr. Magik? I'd say Drudge (and the Republicans) are paying Clark a compliment. Many compliments.

Real chickens can't talk, let alone rubber ones. Save your liberal lies for someone more gullible.
It's an attempt to make him seem opportunistic and unprincipled--the content doesn't really matter.
