That was the single most painful game I've ever seen. And I grew up a Red Sox fan. Bucky Dent, Bill Buckner... nothing compares to "eight in the eighth."
But yes, please, don't murder that guy. He needs to live with what he's done, for another 95 cursed years.
He didn't boot the DP, he didn't walk castillo, and he didn't give up a 400 foot double to Mike freaking Mordeci. You don't see me blaming Mueller for those three runs off Lowe (oh wait, I spent all day yesterday doing that).
But this is why sports arguments are so much fun. I say he changed the course of the game, so that he is in fact responsible (in part) for all those things. Now that he's safely out of the park, can I reconsider my earlier admonishments to the crazed crowd?
I agree that the play changed the course of the game, but I think the admonishment has to stand. Seriously -- remember the guy on the Colombia world cup squad. He kicked an own-goal, Colombia lost to the pathetic US team and was eliminated. Soon after, he was shot to death by a fan.
It's only baseball. He knows what he did. That's punishment enough.
Well, he may be causally responsible for changing outcome of the game, but it doesn't follow that he's morally responsible.
Perhaps he merely foresaw, but did not intend, that his action would have this effect. Or maybe he allowed the Cubs to lose without actively bringing it about that the Cubs lose.
OK, who's teaching (and hating) applied ethics right now?
Crazed fans of Chicago, direct your anger at the philosophy professor...
I do remember the Columbian player. And Mitch Williams, who was run out of town, but not murdered. Don't kill the Cubs guy. But you may run him out of town.

If you're going to run him out of town, why not kill him? I never understand these bright lie death penalty arguments...

I thought the Columbian guy was shot because some drug-cartel guy had lost a lot of money on the game...

Here's a story on Andres Escobar, the Columbian player who was killed. Here's one on the Cub guy.
