This is why watching politics is so stomach-churning. The second-best part of that linked anecdote is the fact that it's Holbrooke's book, not Clark's, that tells us the details. Letting people know about your good character is against your good character: it's the money shot of the political realm.

That someone like this would have to make an effort to appear "strong" in contrast to our current president...sorry, I get emotional whenever I read about Clark's rope trick.

I agree. I have to keep myself from deciding to vote for Clark on the strength of that single story. I wouldn't counsel "appear strong" if I didn't think he is in fact strong--I just wouldn't care. But I like the guy, I think he can do better and the fact that I have to consider that other people will have very different reactions to him is, as you say, what politics are all about.

Well, its not like George (or any recent predecessors ) comes across as not an appeaser. Sad thing is that voters love it! Especially if you kiss theirs (whatever your "power base")
