So, can you lay some whoop-down on the meta-ethical defeatism issuing from John Holbo? Let's brand this blog as foundationalism friendly and deonotology defending in ogged's absence.
Oh, I forgot to mention that this is the official blog of the Kucinich campaign.
I was just typing about holbo-inspired issues (though I can't get the trackback to work) though when he got to the %$^# calculations I have to admit I just gave up. The paradox of deterrence was supposed to be a way of saying that the goodness of the end result does not ensure that the actions taken to bring that result about are right, even on a fairly plausible consequentialist view.
The straightforward c-ist reply to Hoblo's case would be (I'd guess) to argue that (a) the Nasty Thing you have to do to get the Good Result (torture, say) is right but (b) it's also right to maintain the traits of character in virtue of which you recoil in horror at the awfulness of the Nasty Thing. Whether or not one can maintain that position on one's own attitudes gets us into Stocker/Williams territory pretty quickly.
i do not understand why people are so ignorant. But i will say this. There is nothing else you can do to me. No weapons formed against me shall prosper. I really wish they would just leave me and mine alone. Do not bother to call or visit. I just may consider a restraining order against all those psychos. And just remember this final tidbit. Where you come from ain't necessarily where you goin. get my drift!
That's not my best picture.
