I'm using Google Desktop with Firefox (on Windows XP) and it's working just fine.

While you can use the tool in any browser, it only indexes your IE browsing history, which lessens the value if Firefox is your main browser.

Aha. So I wasn't wrong. Sheesh. I'd love to install it, but it's incompatible with something we're running on our network at the moment. Glad you all are enjoying it...
