interesting idea, and I think the post is meant to answer itself-- the religious right's is an identity-giving affiliation. One good example of the retreat into deeper wackiness is the current "controversy" over whether there's some sort of oppression of those who keep Christmas. About which I say "Happy Holidays, folks."

Yes; I understand that the fundamentalists are agin it. It's not in the Bible, is it?
someone could easily make those same comments about this blog it's sort of a cultish internet chit chat club with it's own members and it's own identity but it's fun
my approach to the religious right which includes my entire birth family is to quietly enjoy the fact that i'm not one of them
then there's those times when i wish i would have been quiet

Actually, the main question isn't rhetorical. I don't know if the religious right is uniformly, partly, or not at all like this.

Is there a more identity-giving affiliation than that of the "Young Republicans?"
No.

They could, but they'd be wrong, since nobody votes, or raises children, or makes any important decision, based on their unfogged reading affiliation.
