I can't wink. Every time I try it comes out as a lopsided blink. A congenital defect, I'm told. As a result I envy winkers, and find the wink to be a device deployed by lechers, con men, inveterate liars and cannibals.
I'm an incorrigible winker. I don't know what sort of misanthropes Sherry's hanging out with, but I've always found it charming. "Gross and slimy"? Only if the person winking at you is gross and slimy. Maybe she should quit hanging out at the bus station.
Your ex is a winker, Ogged. I don't think she uses it to reach out to people, though. I think she uses it to signal irony.
I find the whole wink thing to be pretty interesting. It's like the backwards-rotating windmill* in Foreign Correspondent. It's something that can't happen naturally, so it must signify something. That's all it is -- a signifier that there's something to notice, and you're left to figure out what it is you're supposed to notice.
My spousal unit cannot wink but she can curl her tongue and she can raise one eyebrow at a time. I can curl my tongue but the single eyebrow thing is impossible for me.
Oh, it's worse than that. I can wink passably well with my left eye, but not my right. I can raise either eyebrow alone, but can't roll my tongue, and I can't see those "magic eye" 3-D drawings.
Touching your tongue to your nose and putting your whole fist in your mouth are sufficiently odd that I don't think we need to count them.

Whenever someone winks at me, I feel like I'm now part of some conspiracy that I never asked to be in on, and I don't know how to get out.

Bush winks. It's creepy. He's an example of a slimy winker. My brother-in-law winks and he's a grade A asshole too.

You're right! I'd forgotten, because she does it infrequently, but she's actually a scandalously good winker.
You're reading Zizek? Don't you want tenure, Bob?

Sticking your tongue out at someone is a great test to determine who is susceptable to flirting.
