Given your disappointment over lack of comments, here's an answer. She's a genius, a poet, and absolutely sums up my shopping experiences with kids this Christmas. Thankyou for bringing her into my life. What worries me is.. why had I never been aware of her before?
Believe it or not, as I write this, I am no more than a mile or so from Lucy Mangan's workplace, yet I had never read her before this afternoon. She may now be my favorite contemporary British writer. Nice find.
I might just do that, though she'd probably think I was a stalker. As it happens, I spent much of yesterday and today reading pretty much everything she's written for the Guardian. Even though I'm no expert on British pop culture, I experienced snot-spraying bouts of laughter at least a dozen times.
Hello sir! As you've raised such a disturbingly funny daughter, there are doubts about the soundness of your parenting, but we do love her, and so we thank you...
Thank you Mr or Ms Ogged. I feel it only fair to state that Lucy's comments on her parenting are, on occasion, mildy exaggerated to make her point. However, there is little doubt that had we not taught her to read when she was three, we probably wouldn't have to endure the endless vitriol which she now sees fit to pour on us. Sounds of chickens coming home to roost all over the place!
I have found myself a new favourite writer... but nobody else seems to have found her! At last, after trawling the Guardian website and Google, I found this page, which is, to be frank, quite random. But hey, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em...
Lacking the profundity of other reviewers, I have to confess, after reading Miss Mangan's articles, the stalker in me arose and I googled her to find a picture; what can I say, I am totally and utterly in love.
.... and can anyone help me in finding all her past gems of hillarity... ive been all over the guardian website but uncovered just a couple .. there must be more surely!!!!
Thank you Ogged for the not so constructive critisism and the link. I am currently attending an adult learning centre to improve my reading and writing.
Bully for you Ogged, you showed her what for and no mistake. Lets keep the illiterate riff raff out. Chatrooms and message boards the last bastions for those with flawless grammer and perfect spelling. Yes I too share millymolly's enthusiam on recently discovering the delights of Lucy Mangan. Her column headed 'Don't do it Camilla' had me laughing out loud in the otherwise silent dentist's waiting room.
Why is Lucy doing a health column ? Doesn't she know she's physically perfect already ? When is she going to be given something worthy of her talents ?
Thankyou to the editorial staff at the Guardian for giving Lucy a long article again. Not only do we have her wit and wisdom on Tesco retailing, we also have four fabulous full colour pictures of our heroine! (My favourite is the one on the cover.)
People named "Reza" don't call themselves "The Rza"? It would be lame if they did but I think it's even lamer that they don't. They should think about calling themselves "The Rza" and then not do it.
I think the meetup is the night of my final exam. If you want to hold something over my head, it should be "You'd have found out if you knew how to," um, whatever that place was called.
Took the kids to Mickey D's after little-league today. Service was a little slow in the drive-thru, but they gave us an extra order of fries by mistake. Score! Suckas!!
If this is going to be uncomfortable, I'm totally staying at home.

What font is that on your site, rob? It looks like a regular font, fed through MS's Clear Type. Never seen one like it.

It *should* be Sylfaen.
The CSS is:
font-family: 'Sylfaen', 'Palatino Linotype', serif;

The decision to teach her to read does seem to have been a fateful one. Though where you hear chickens, we hear only laughter.
