So, Dana Milbank has a piece up in the Washington Post about how this is all just a warm-up to the looming Supreme Court nomination battles.
Which, okay, fine, that's a reasonable conclusion. But one thing Milbank fails to mention is the fact that it's hard to find a judge, conservative or liberal, who agreed with the recent Congressional action.
If the Democrats are smart (Jesus, how plentiful and futile are the sentences that begin with those five words), they'll ask every nominee whether the Congressional action was Constitutional.
I'd love it if Bush couldn't find a nominee who came down in favor of it. The Christian right wouldn't know who to root for.
But one thing Milbank fails to mention is the fact that it's hard to find a judge, conservative or liberal, who agreed with the recent Congressional action.
I was so proud of the judiciary through this. Even the wingnuts act like judges when they're faced with a truly lawless situation.
"The essence of civilization is that the strong have a duty to protect the weak."
Maybe this is Bush's coded language for his liberal Democratic college buddies?
One key problem is that Bush would be happy to have thousands of strong private indiviudals tell hundreds of millions of weak people how to protect themselves. Or, more on point, Bush wouldn't mind appointing movement judges that think is an acceptable trend to encourage.
Even more on point, I too was impressed by the performance of the judiciary.
Not if 'filled' is a verb. Try it like this: "What a bunch of hate filled the bozos, who had previously been filled only with the yawning emptiness of the void."
Gawd-dammit! Wolfson, ogged and I settled the non-creepy blogcrush issues here weeks ago. You were around; if you wanted a say, you should have spoken then. As if the Stanford acceptance was not enough. And, increasingly, I begin to suspect that your gf is not a shrew. This is just hella wrong.
Although even then, some word would have to appear in order to replace "be"... such as, for example, "appear". Also, Joe, you were right in the first place that "hate filled" should have a hyphen. Your immediate capitulation to LizardBreath has revealed your true appeaser nature for all to see. Why don't you just move to France and start a cheese factory, appeaser?
How did I get to be Germany? And how have I lived this long without ever having heard of E-Prime, which seems to be a movement for saving the world through increased levels of waffling?
I know that now -- I googled and found some E-Prime sites. The main effect seems to be to turn the E-Prime speaker into a hopeless waffler -- "The car involved in the accident was a Ford" changes to "I recall the car involved in the accident resembling a Ford." You have to love anyone who thinks that the world's ills can be cured if everyone would just speak less definitely.
Excellent -- any country that tries to stop tanks with a cavalry charge is a country I'm proud to be analogized with. (But when did France capitulate to Poland?)
All the country metaphors would make a lot more sense if Walter had told Joe "just become France," rather than, "just move to France." Where he'd apparently fit in better with the other appeasers. This all got really confusing once the original statement was read as an analogy of the form
Appeasement refers to Munich (1938). Munich was about whether or not Czechoslovakia would give up the Sudetenland to Germany without a fight. The western powers met with Germany, said they wouldn't defend if Germany attacked.
Czecholovakia was not included in the talks. When informed that they would not be defended they simply handed over the territory without fighting. An argument can be made that they should have fought anyway.
When Germany threatened Poland, however, the west European powers pledged to defend its borders. That wasn't appeasement, it was the beginning of the war.
Honestly, all I was thinking of was the meme about the French being "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" and so forth. I wasn't actually even thinking of LB as any country in particular until she brought it up, at which point I figured I'd just play along. As Joe might point out that The Editors would point out, none of this has any effect whatsoever on Michael Moore's ghastly blobbishness.
Oh, and Britain also participated in appeasement. The fact that France got occupied too should not obscure this.
Britain perpertrated the appeasement. Chamberlain and that shameful piece of paper he waved at the public : "There will be peace in our time." No wonder the French still refer to Perfidious Albion. Although THAT dates from a different century altogether.
I'm sorry I missed this. Sleeping steals way too much time.
For the record: I hope that the cyncism encapsualted Bush's comment is used against him and his kind at every opportunity.
And come to think about it, Britain seems to be very adept at appeasement.
God. Fuck him, that motherfucker.
Ahem.

You got to be Germany through the simple expedient of being on the receiving end of blatant appeasement.
E-prime is either a modified form of English without the verb "to be", or the leader of the good Transformers. I'm no longer sure which.
Posted by Walter Sobchak | Link to this comment | 03-31-05 3:47 PM
1. I admit my history is shaky, but wouldn't you (LB) actually be Poland?
