No one important, I suppose. (I do it on my blog) But it does seem like it would solve the problem of being able to link directly to comments while maintaining the convenience of being taken to the latest comment when opening a new thread. Don't be afraid to be a trendsetter.
Here's one reason. As it stands, it's only inconvenient if there are so many comments that there's no link to the newest-to-you comment (henceforth ntyc) on the front page. Otherwise, you simply click that link and then read and scroll down. In the even that there's no link for the ntyc, you first scroll up to it, then read and scroll down. Under your proposed system, one would have to do this: follow link to, or otherwise find, the ntyc comment. Read it down. Scroll up to the next comment. Read it down. Scroll up, read down. Why complicate things? 27's reasoning is also quite sound.
Also, it's perfectly acceptable in cases such as comment 4 to leave out the pronoun.
It would make it harder to read through the conversation--it's not like most of these stand on their own. For instance, if I were to say "'I oppose this innovation that Michael proposes' or 'I oppose this innovation, which Michael proposes'" someone who got to that without having read your #5 wouldn't know what I was talking about.
(FTR: #4 and #5 are both acceptable. You can drop 'that', and it's OK to use 'which' to introduce a restrictive clause.)
(Also: if you want blog love, you should put your URL in with your comments. I googled "michael" and I'm still not sure which one you are.)
You might think so, you dastardly Weiner, but newer versions of MT (this blog included!) use the rel="nofollow" attribute in the anchor tags in comments, so google doesn't include them in its indexing. This is supposed to decrease the efficacy and, presumably, the volume of comment spam.
Also, some dude just called me to tell me I was admitted to Stanford's PhD program.
Does that mean I can never get "Whoop ass Weiner" to show up in google, or only that linking it from the comments won't help? I'm willing to come up with a flimsy reason to link it from my front page if that's what it takes.
Phlbbbt. "This" doesn't have to point to itself. I'm not sure what the link to my home page is supposed to be doing. Actually, I'm not clear about the following things in the last sentence there:
(1) The antecedent of the first 'it'
(2) The antecedent of the second 'it'
(3) What "the 'posted by' section" is
(4) What the contextual domain restriction of "all links" is
(5) What linking to my home page with "let's find out" is supposed to accomplish.
I am lamentably ignorant of HTML so some of these are probably obvious.
Congratulations, Ben! What program? Philosophy?(A preview of grad life over there.)
Your oppositions are noted, but the difference seems a matter of taste. I'm just a big fan of the convenience of not having ot scroll down each time I open a thread.
Re: 4 & 5. There's technically correct, and there's pleasing-to-the-ear correct, bitches. Nothing is technically wrong with your construction, it just "sounds" clunky.
Normally I would say something like, "Man, I guess they will let anyone in," but nah, I'll just say "well done!" The only thing better would have been if he'd offered you (a) fellatio, too.
With all his HTML special character knowledge, you'd think Wolfson would be a little more forthcoming with his ASCII art nudes in the comments here. You're holding out on us.
It was after a couple of beers, so I only recognized Nikki Sixx & Vince Neil. A quick search turns this up, with some fotos attached. Mick Mars looks terrible. This is what the bourgeois revolution will look like.
How about just a button or link at the top of the comments box that executes the same line of Javascript you just commented out of the OnLoad function? That way, it's totally, like, user-friendly and shit.
It would. Or you could find blogs that don't do the transformation in their comments, or ask ogged to link to your page with that name on the front page, or something.
Looking at Joe's site, I can't recommend "The Dirt" (the Mötley Crüe oral auobiography) highly enough- I've given it out as a birthday/xmas gift to family and friends for a couple of years now, and it's consistently the best thing they get.
Some thoughtful words from Ratt's fan of the month, some goober named Trey, who could do with some punctuation lessons from Wolfson: "Thank you for this honor, this is just too cool, and a big thanks to my better half, Mara you are the reason why I am who I am today, I love you with all of my heart, you truly are an angel that was sent to me, thank you for Caitie & Zach, thank you my love."
I might have to change my homepage to www.therattpack.com.
Why not just reverse the order of comments? New ones go on top.

The short, but true, answer is that no one else does it that way.

Me too. Mostly because I support whatever Ben supports... But also because it's just a plain ol' bad idea.

Would it be possible to arrange comments alphabetically by first word? It would make searching easier.

Actually, you left "this" (meaning that) comment. What would have been the right thread for you to have left it in?
As for "Whoop ass Weiner", I don't know if it does it just for links in the "posted by" section or all links... let's find out!.

Yep, rel="nofollow" all the way. Looks like your ass weiner's screwed again.

(1) the link-rewriting system that adds the 'rel="nofollow"' attribute to "a" tags.
(2) "does it" -> "rewrites the links"
(3) the section at the end of each comment that says "Posted by: so-and-so".
(4) the comments page
(5) it creates a link outside of the "posted by" area, which I can then insmect[sic] by viewing the source to see if it has the nofollow attribute.
FOR THE PERPLEXED: in this (obviously inactive) tag: <a href="http://mattweiner.net" rel="nofollow"> the "href" and "rel" are the attributes.
MICHAEL:
Nothing is technically wrong with your construction, it just "sounds" clunky.

It's kinda redundant, but then, I gotta right-click to pop comments in a tab anyways.
