What's bugged me about the rationale for the invasion is that stupid flypaper theory.
Great. So now we are protecting our civilians by intentionally putting other civilians in danger.
If you are being threatened with a gun, is it morally defensible for you to pull an innocent bystander in front of you to take the bullet?
I really don't want to compare myself to some of the more rabid and embarrasing elements of academia, but I do see an inconsistency here on the part of the administration.
AFAIK she's not a philosophy professor. She's a poet and lecturer "trained in philosophy," if that eases your load.

Eep! One more click proved me wrong. Apologies.

Are the first two photos really the same person?
And I suppose if Putnam can assign "Twin Earth," then she can assign Close to the Shore, but there's something a little iffy about it...

The stupid hippie is right that the unjustified invasion of Iraq has led to over 100,000 Iraqi deaths. I hate it when the stupid hippies are right.

Is this really that bad of a comparison to make?

The culture of life is really selective.

Ah, sorry, what bugged me was this:
Lots of people might be able to get away with something that sloppy, but not a philosophy professor.

I think that I will never see
An ocean formed from XYZ

An ocean with a sandy beech
O'er which the silver elms roots reach
A silver elm whose mouth is prest
against the twin-earth's flowing brest

er, "breast." "beech" is intentional.
Posted by Matt Weiner | Link to this comment | 03-29-05 4:31 PM
Well, that's much better than Putnam's poetry
Posted by baa | Link to this comment | 03-29-05 7:44 PM
wait, baa, is that quote above from putnam's poetry, or did you make it up? because it's hella funny. god I'm a nerd.
Posted by alameida | Link to this comment | 03-30-05 1:46 AM
Made it up, I must admit.
Posted by baa | Link to this comment | 03-30-05 6:11 AM
Admit? You should be proud. My attempts at elaboration were mere lame attempts to hitch my wagon to your star.
(Annoyingly, there are silver elms as well as silver beeches.)

You probably want a rewrite here to avoid the repetition of "attempts".

What, now we're nitpicking style? Next we'll be nitpicking content or scansion.

I'm waiting for people to start nitpicking my name.

Bad news Matt, "Weiner" is irretrievably trochaic.
Posted by baa | Link to this comment | 03-30-05 9:55 AM
If said with a French accent, by a pretty French lady, "Weiner" need not be trochaic.
Posted by ogged | Link to this comment | 03-30-05 9:59 AM
ah, monsieur weeNAIHR, you are so charmant...
Posted by ben wolfson | Link to this comment | 03-30-05 10:05 AM
And starring Ben Wolfson as "pretty french lady."
