At least three cups a day. And I basically live on iced coffee in summer.
LizardB will appreciate it when I say that I had my first taste of iced coffee from Suzy's plastic cup, purchased at Double Duck.
I'll also note, for LB's benefit alone, that I used to hang out with Suzy because I was obsessed with Marc Riffon (who was a senior when we were in 10th grade), and she was going out with him. She told me that they would get stoned and listen to Sade before they got it on. Which seemed cool to me, at the time.
I've always been a regular coke/pepsi (I don't really have a preference anymore) drinker but recently I've become addicted and upped my consumption level. I keep thinking I'm going to move up to coffee to increase the level of caffeine but so far it hasn't happened.
Sometimes I think I'm addicted to not drinking coffee, but then I tell myself: I can start anytime I want.
Lots of coffee. It doesn't have any noticeable stimulant effect anymore, but if I don't get it I get very unpleasant to be around. The foul mood kicks in an hour or so before the headache starts, so I don't always figure out what's causing it. As long as no one interferes with my three or four cups a day, though, I'm fine.
(ac- Man, I am so out of touch with everyone from highschool. If I'm correctly remembering who Suzy was (her picture in the yearbook was basically naked, right?) then I hardly knew her.)
Yes, she was naked, on a bed, with rumpled sheets in her yearbook photo. And she's not to be confused with Alison C., who posed naked in a towel. Or Juliana D., who was wearing a very small bikini.
I tend to have three cups of coffee a day about three days out of every two or three weeks, depending; I tend to swing in and out of it, these days.
I tend to drink a tasty caffeinated carbonated drink about as frequently. I tend to drink Earl Grey tea about the same. From time to time I'll indulge in another (caffeinated) tea.
you're being interviewed? Probably worth getting up for. If you are around in normal people hours, check in. Although I'm not sure how much more I have to offer on the subject.
4 a.m. -- you may want to become a coffee drinker soon.
I was an out of control coffee drinker in grad school - it was more about compulsive consumption than staying awake - and it started to give me crazy heart palpitations (well, together with stress), which on top of a normally minor arrhythmic hearbeat were really scary. I didn't give up caffeine, but I switched almost entirely to tea, which I find has a much more mellow effect.
I drink coffee every morning, but usually only for the first couple hours of the day. I usually drink a caffeinated soft drink about 2-3 o'clock in the afternoon.
on other drugs, or clean living
I am neither an adherent nor a proponent of clean living.
I usually avoid caffeine because of the rhythm problems-- except sometimes I'll have a coke with lunch. I drink a cup of decaf once every week or so. Tea sometimes. The blood of innocent undergraduates a couple of times a day, just to keep my mind sharp and clear. No other drug use; pot seems kind of silly these days, and the last time I tried it I felt as though my chest were being compressed by a very wide belt. Unpleasant.
I do love tea, but decaf is fine. (Not such a fan of herbal). It is about taste, not caffeine. I drink coffee, but mostly decaf. I've given up diet coke (which I would drink caf free ... was more about the carbonation). I can cold turkey caffeine at any point in time. On an average day I probably have a fountain diet coke and maybe a tea or a coffee.
As for other drugs ... ummm, never not ever. Are you gonna take away my cool kids badge for that?
Ummm. I puked in the frat quad once, like a common sorority girl. Yes, I've been drunk before ... but I was more of a regular low-level drinker than a binge drinker or anything like that.
And I've had sex before too. See? Not a total nerd. (ummm, just don't tell my mom about that last bit)
I have been drunk lots. Mostly before I drank coffee. Now I drink more coffee, less alcohol. Though I do still occasionally get what the kids today call "tips."
Also I have had sex. I've even had sex drunk. I think they are both more enjoyable in their respective spheres, however.
I think denizens of the frathaus lifestyle ought to get drunk every now and then. It is what they do while drunk that separates them from the regular frat houses. For instance, if you say "wooooo," you are ejected from the frathaus.
Not that I have been given membership to the frathaus, nor a cool kids card. Though I have done lots of things in my underwear.
Hardly an academic, but back when I was in law school, I relied on copious quantities of coffee and alcohol to get me through, which worked well for professional reasons - lawyers drink a LOT and being able to a) get drunk and have clever stories to tell or b) hold your drink in the right circumstances would both helped professionally.
As for coffee, my grandfather put it in my bottle. Really. I've been drinking it forever. I still have my very first coffee cup, which is the tiniest thing ever and perhaps evidence of child abuse at the hands of Juan Valdez. I try to give up coffee every once in a while, figuring that that much caffeine cannot be good for a body, but every time I do I feel like my skin's been turned inside out.
I am still at work. I have divulged an awful lot today, yes. I am not in my underwear, though I could be. I don't think anyone is left on my floor. I am writing about qualified immunity.
I must restrain myself, or I will tell one too many underpants stories, and estrange myself forever from the cool kids club.
My father used to carry a little card in his wallet that said (in French) "Always drink. Never die." He stopped drinking, and later died. Let that be a lessson to us all.
Diligently returning to the original topic, I'm no academic but on days when I drive my car or take the bus to work, I begin with my 24 ounce coffepot. Purchased because it can only make 24 ounces of coffee. Strong coffee.
Motorcycle days start with a single 12 ounce mug.
Either way, this is followed up by at least 1 cup of tea, and probably twice a week with a big 4-shot espresso drink.
My philosophy w/r/t booze is that I enjoy drinking too much to let it become a problem. I'm too lawful to get into anything else.
BTW - I'm no academic, but probably should have been. I do work in the caffeine-fueled tech sector, though.
And shouldn't the blue panties be for blue Mondays?
I think you could probably find maraschino in Chicago, but not on the south side.
Sweet music is a noble cause for early mornings. But I thought you were a paralegal or something. Are you one of those hardworking Americans with a night (or early morning) job?
You can—I have some—but I have yet to be in a bar that had it. There's one that may have, actually, but I wasn't paying that much attention. Admittedly, as well, that's not many bars.
I am a paralegal or something, but my para-legal activities don't generally take place between 3 and 6 in the morning (fortunately for my sanity, neither do my sweet music related program activities, but just this once).
B-Dub, you should really get them to stream you over the internet- I was up at those unfortunate hours this morning, and would have been game for anything to keep my mind off the pain.
Academic with significant but variable coffee consumption. Other drugs: scotch, occasionally. And not during working hours.

well this is getting much more interesting than the coffee poll.
But I will say that I drink crazy amounts of coffee and moderate amounts of alcohol. I prefer my drugs like my women -- gentle, yet possessive.
An aside -- I read somewhere that men who like the taste of coffee are more likely to commit adultery. Thoughts?
Sorry. working late again.

Lots of coffee.
Used to smoke, now only very rarely, for the novelty.
A fair amount of drinking, though not as much as I used to now that my body is getting older.
Virtually any social life in NYC revolves around bars, though. Drinking is so totally woven into city culture.

NYC has at least some really good bars. Just try finding a place that stocks, say, maraschino in Chicago.
Textualist, I wasn't being interviewed but rather caused, for the third time in seven days, sweet music to suffuse the air of the south side.
