There are variations to that add and she's in all of them. I just saw one earlier today ("Peace Through Superior Firepower" or something) that featured her. They're "liberal-baiting" T-shirts, and cornball though they are, that's funnier than you generally get from the right.
Why do you guys have Insty on your blogroll again? You don't mock him as much as, say, Crooked Timber does, but that's a pretty low bar to hurdle for Reynolds-love, and I've yet to see an Unfogged post on Reynolds that contradicts the left-of-center consensus that he's a vapid and silly hack. Is this some clever long-term linkwhoring strategy I don't get?
Instapundit knows ogged's real name, and will reveal it unless he remains on the blogroll and is shipped a pound of ogged's mother's homemade amerideen once a month.
Not too long ago I saw a car with a "Peace Through Superior Firepower" bumper sticker. I honestly couldn't tell whether it was a liberal being ironic or a conservative being serious. Am I overinterpreting or can that phrase be read either way?
You know, the more I think about this t-shirt (it took me a little while to get past the magnificent rack), the more confused I get.
OK, Hammer & Sickle: Huh huh, civil libertarians are communists! Communists are bad. Therefor, civil libertarians are bad. I got that part.
Enemies of the State: Isn't the whole right-wing nutjob beef with communism the issue of self-determination vs. the state? Wouldn't a real 'winger be proud to call herself an "Enemy of the State?" Is this shirt (seriously or not) trying to indict the ACLU/commies for being insufficiently conforming to state-defined virtue?
And if you continue to look for ideological (or just plain logical) consistency from the modern conservative, you'll continue to be confused. I mean, they've turned on John McCain, one of the four or five most conservative members of the Senate, for not tossing Bush's salad with sufficient enthusiasm. Yale professors are writing op-eds condemning... professors. Apresident who is an Andover, Harvard, and Yale alumnus and son of the most powerful political family in America (and possibly the world, aside from the Sauds) sneers without a hint of irony at "elitists" while vacationing in Kennebunkport. The party of small government has expanded it at a rate unseen since FDR. The folks decrying activist judges are sending death threats to judges for not actively intervening in trhe Schiavo case (culture of life, y'see).
It boggles the mind. That thumping sound you hear is Barry Goldwater flailing all turbine-stylee against the sides of his coffin.
Apostropher - The conservatives make each and every liberal personally own Jesse Jackson, Jane Fonda, Al Sharpton and every other controversial figure who's even a shade left of what passes for the center these days.
By separating movement conservatism from conservatives, we're giving wiggle room where none is deserved. Every individual conservative must be made to take personal responsibility for Ralph Reed, Tom DeLay, Grover Norquist, Al Gonzales, Antonin Scalia et al. They made the monster, they own it. Each and every one of them.
Actually, Chopper, I was thinking the same thing- get rid of the hammer & tong- er, sickle, and I imagine the ACLU would start handing out the shirts.
Totally! Take off the hammer and sickle and put a big old imperial eagle on it and I'll wear it! Shit, replace the hammer and sickle with a C, and put in a swastika, a hammer and sickle and anything else along those lines and then 'Enemy of the States' and I'll pay EXTRA!
It really should have 'And you can kiss my ass if you don't like it' on it too.
eb, all the way down through the thread I was thinking "no-one has brought out 'lumpenproletariat' yet. WTF? Unfoggedites are getting slack."
But then with each passing comment I started to get excited, thinking it was a perfect opportunity for me to bring up "lumpenproletariat". And then I got to comment 28.
I wonder how the fundies feel about this promoting their side?
I love to bring up Paris Hilton when talking to the right. She is the poster girl for repealing the estate tax. Save Paris - kill the death tax. On the other hand the fundies hate the slut, so they have to pretend they are protecting family farms and not Paris Hilton.
OK, here's something I thought of: Isn't Insty supposedly a libertarian? Pro-gay marriage, pro-free speech, anti-torture in the weakest fucking way possible? So shouldn't he be kinda bugged that this ad is running on his site? (Second Amendment, I know, but the ACLU doesn't campaign for gun control.)

You're not pretending there's anything more congenial on that site, are you?
But you're doing yeoman's work while ogged's getting in touch with ... well let's be honest, probably himself, and probably a couple times a day.

I'd never seen googlefight before, that's good stuff. It'd probably be useful for modeling blogger combat.

I've been told Unf is responsible, but if you hold your mouse over the Instapundit link, you'll see the real reason.

Chopper, the issue is how the state is determining. It's fascists versus commies, obv.

Yes, but I know conservatives who are consistent in their beliefs, are willing to call their own out when they disagree with them, and all the rest.
Posted by apostropher | Link to this comment | 04-29-05 5:15 PM
Y'know, the more times I look at the shirt, the stupider it gets. After all, nobody was out defending civil liberties like the Bolsheviks, baby.

That would be a bit much even for a fairly exhibitionist photoblogger.

True, but unfortunately cold also tends to lead to, um, the withering away of the state.
