Re: I Don't Feel Special

1

I probably should have told you that I am buying them dinner at the Greens...

horizontal rule
2

No, no you shouldn't have.

horizontal rule
3

ogged, you need to show up and STOP THE WEDDING!

horizontal rule
4

I would, but they might MAKE ME DANCE!

horizontal rule
5

But really, can't you just lock everyone else in the church (or faculty club) with a big cross, thus scotching the wedding and the dancing? I suppose big crosses are hard to find at faculty clubs these days...

horizontal rule
6

Have you done this before?

horizontal rule
7

Someone named Ben has.

Don't tell me you haven't seen this?

horizontal rule
8

I don't think I have. Now I'm pre-cuckolded and unhip?

horizontal rule
9

Sorry, link in the above is busted

horizontal rule
10

Ah, that I have seen. But, typically, remember none of it.

horizontal rule
11

Ogged has never seen the Graduate?

horizontal rule
12

You need to watch the Graduate, and then immediate afterwards watch "Barcelona" to see Chris Eigeman deliver Whit Stillman's hilarious denunciation.

horizontal rule
13

I hate when the blog gives me homework. Maybe I can find the denuncation online somewhere. I probably remember enough of the feel of the original to find it funny.

horizontal rule
14

David Horowitz needs to fight for more Whit Stillman films.

horizontal rule
15

Seriously, you should rent Barcelona tonight. And given your lonely, loveless existence, I know that you're free!

horizontal rule
16

You know, I think Barcelona may be the only Stillman movie I like entirely. Last Days of Disco was good, but a bit too patchy IIRC.

horizontal rule
17

Thanks, baa, I'll see if the company is amenable.

horizontal rule
18

>David Horowitz needs to fight for more Whit Stillman films.

I so agree! Let's make an online petition.

SCMT, I like all the Whit Stillman movies, in the sense that I would give them all a "thumbs up, way up." I agree that Barcelona feels a bit more unified than Metropolitan or Last Days of Disco.

Ogged, Nothing to add. Except that I was dissaponted that the "you can't touch this" post didn't end up being about MC Hammer.

horizontal rule
19

Usually when I'm on a date, I demand road-head while going through the drive-thru. If she refuses, I park as far away as possible and make her walk. It costs money to let your car idle while some flighty woman can't make up her mind about what she wants to order (fellas, you know what I'm talkin' about!).

horizontal rule
20

Give me that toothpaste, dad.

horizontal rule
21

baa,

I'm surprised that you like Metropolitan. I can't say I hated it, because I stopped watching after a few minutes, but I didn't find it interesting enough to stay in the room. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

horizontal rule
22

But David Horowitz wouldn't actually get us any more films. Instead he would rant about the need to get more films and the un named forces that keep us from getting the films. And he'd ask us for money. Then he'd support legislation to allow us to hold accountable the un named forces responsible for denying us the movies. But still, no movies. And he'd hoodwink state legsislators into holding hearings and threatening to issue subpeonas and going on Hardball and sounding less like Solons and more like asses on the whole issue. And then he'd ask us for more money. And at the end of the day, no movies. David Horowitz is the master of the right wing dry hump.

Perhaps what we need is Jack Abramoff? Or maybe we can hire Delay directly?

horizontal rule
23

Instead he would rant about the need to get more films and the un named forces that keep us from getting the films. And he'd ask us for money. Then he'd support legislation to allow us to hold accountable the un named forces responsible for denying us the movies

But benton, doesn't that sound liek an awesome result?

horizontal rule
24

baa, I hadn't thought of it this way. It would be especially awesome if we got to appear on tv with our faces digitally altered or behind a curtain to protect our identities from the "movie bosses" who are denying us Whit Stillman.

As long as we didn't have to send money.

horizontal rule
25

Metropolitan is one of my favorite movies ever. I'm not sure what that says about me other than that any opinion I express in these comments has to conflict with SCMT. I didn't like last Days of Disco particlarly but enjoyed barcelona.

But anyone who hasn't watched metropolitan should.

horizontal rule
26

I'm partial to Last Days of Disco myself. But then when it came out it seemed eerily like my life at the time. I was living in NYC with two friends who worked in publishing, one blonde and nice, the other brown-haired and bitchy, one of whom went to the same boarding school as Whit Stillman. And the female leads in that movie were supposed to have gone to a college down the road from me (Hampshire).

horizontal rule
27

OK, random and OT, but every time I skim past the title of this post, I remember the intro to Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" where David Lee Roth says "I don't feel tardy." It's made for an interesting way of viewing this post.

I'd also like to note: PG goes out of town, excitedly hinting that she'll have sex. Ogged has "visitors" in town this weekend. Coincidence? Convenient camouflage?

horizontal rule
28

Even better -- what if you're right, but neither one of them knows the other blogs. A couple of weeks from now, at the big ogged-profgrrl date, they can lock eyes in astonishment and say "My god, it's, it's, you!"

I see it as a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie.

horizontal rule
29

Chopper, I'm ashamed to say that that Van Halen line is a favorite of mine. I think I've even used it in school.

But you torture me with the PG thing. Her "boy" is definitely not me. For a while, I tried what you're trying now, and insisted that it was Labs. No, it's just some schmoe who probably doesn't even have a blog.

horizontal rule
30

Damn, we did it again, LB.

Ok, *I'm* going home, though that means I'll be back online in about ten minutes.

horizontal rule
31

Delete 28 before someone reads it, writes that movie, and I somehow get tricked into seeing it.

horizontal rule
32

Why be ashamed? Van Halen I and 1984 are great fucking albums. The line I quote most often is from "Panama:"

I reach down

between my legs

and ease the seat back.

Delightfully sleazy.

horizontal rule
33

If we're turning this into a movie, don't you see this more as a John Hughes Film?

Molly Ringwald is PG. Anthony Michael Hall is Ogged. Judd Nelson is "boy." Ally Sheedy is Wolfson. And Emilio Estevez is Labs.

horizontal rule
34

That's a great scenario, LB. I think Labs suggested something similar way back in the day. You know, ex's parents are screenwriters...

horizontal rule
35

I know I suggested something similar once. Here we go. With bonus future active participle action!

horizontal rule
36

There you go, that's probably what I was thinking of.

horizontal rule
37

Wolfson, to be sent to that post is to be reminded of the strange comedic genius of the Gayatollah, and miss his regular postings all the more. (And yes, I just added "Gayatollah" to the spell checker.)

horizontal rule
38

Is it me, or do you seem genuinely plaintive today Ogged (as opposed to mock plaintive)?

horizontal rule
39

Is that your more polite way of calling me a whore (ala SCMT) whenever I'm nice to someone?

horizontal rule
40

No, actually it isn't. But I'll call you a whore if you really want me to.

horizontal rule
41

Uh, no.

horizontal rule
42

Be fair, ogged. I don't do that anymore. Not since you became so "genuinely plaintive."

horizontal rule
43

Just being polite.

horizontal rule
44

Why do I blog?

horizontal rule
45

It's like hanging out with friends, without all the awkward enjoying yourself.

horizontal rule
46

That's it. It's working perfectly.

horizontal rule
47

baa, i love you more than ever, since "Metropolitan" is or was one of my favorite movies. Poor Tom Townshend-- can't even afford a decent overcoat.

horizontal rule
48

Seriously, what in Gawd's name do you guys like about Metropolitan? Based on the little of it I saw, I would have put it on one my "worst movies evar" lists. Immature Stillman is pretty painful; hell, I can crash a Dalton reunion if I want to hear that shite.

horizontal rule
49

I think Labs suggested something similar way back in the day.

a-HEM. (Comments didn't have timestamps at the time.)

horizontal rule
50

Yeah, but you can still link to them individually, Weinman.

horizontal rule
51

I... I am filled with shame! This one.

The whole thread is pretty rockin', though.

horizontal rule
52

Profgrrrl is a nice piece of some, Ogged.

It's just too late to stop the weddin'.
