It seems to me there are a lot of people who are most awake around the night hours you mention. Can't we force society to conform to our circadian rhythms, rather than the crap we go through currently?
But do you actually have to do work when you arrive, and are you supervised, or under the penopticon at any point. (Sorry, I'm having trouble myself waking today, so I have bad Foucault references). If not, I might suggest napping as the answer.
The whole first six months after the kid was born and I was back at work were like that from beginning to end of the day. I still can't tell you what happened.
There was some interesting Electrical Engineering work done on the best way to synchronize two clocks. Basically you want a master clock and then set the other to run a little faster or slower but synch up on a regular basis.
I think our internal clock runs on about a 25 hour day but resets every day to the real world which makes sense from a design standpoint.
With no external cues I think we'd get later and later until our clock wrapped.
If left to my own devices, I usually would work from about noon to eight (or seven). I have trouble staying up much later than 11PM, though -- I think I might just plain need 9 hours of sleep. If I go down to 8 during the week, my body will basically insist on making up for it on the weekend.
It's a burden, but if I didn't get 9 hours of sleep, I wouldn't be such an incredibly productive person.
This made me think of one of my pet peeves - the things we teach our kids that are not true. The four basic tastes, five senses, six vowels and seven colors of the rainbow. Geez. None of it correct.
People are over-reacting. It's not like she's white, Christian, or rich. And there are, after all, places in the world where, and times in history when, people would beg to be treated as she has been.
I never can understand why my clients wont hold workshops at 8pm - my whole team and I could rock to that, apart from the work-life balance stuff. But no, they insist on holding workshops starting at 8:30 am. In my experience your average consultant isn't capable of speech till past 11am.
As for sleep, well that's a moot topic generally with me. What stinks is being an insomniac AND tired.
If youre not keen, i wouldnt go melatonin -- recently i've heard a lot of anecdotal evidence that it gives you nightmares. but i agree -- you never get used to it. whatever time i get to work, it doesnt matter: i will start to actually WORK around noon, and i'll really feel like something is happening around 4 or 5. when i had to work 8-5, i was there, but nothing ever got done.
sounds newagey, i'm sure, because it is: but i have had alot of success with lavender aromatherapy for getting me to fall deeply asleep earlier. i'm not sure if it helps with the actual FALLING asleep, but it definitely does make the sleep more deep and REM-y.
Do you have a long commute, or just an early start time?

Early start; short commute.

And while we're at it, how about some saner working hours generally?

There are some things I have to do early in the day, otherwise, I'd just try to change my hours.

Ever since standing guard by the fire went out of style, we've been pretty much screwed.

If ogged were to nap, he would be an easier target.

I've heard that ogged won't date anyone whose panties he hasn't seen in advance.
Posted by ben wolfson | Link to this comment | 06-22-05 11:33 AM
But what will we do?
Posted by ogged | Link to this comment | 06-22-05 11:33 AM

OK. I have no idea how I did that. Sorry for the mis-posting of the comment.

Sure, Ogged, I'll be right over. It'll just take me -- oh, better part of a day and an expensive ticket to get there :)
And how many other girls' panties have you seen in advance?
(Still wondering how SCMT knew I'm not white, Christian and rich. Oh, dammit. I am white, aren't I? ;)

You know what you call a bunch of John Deere's parked outside a McDonalds in Iowa?
Prom night!

ogged, have you ever tried taking melatonin at night to try to rejigger your internal clock, just to get you to sleep a bit earlieer?
Posted by Abby | Link to this comment | 06-22-05 2:57 PM
I haven't. I'm not much of an anything-other-than-food ingester, so I'm not keen to take it.
