Re: Join Now, Become Fan Club Vice-President

1

Ogged brings out my inner Nelson Muntz.

2

If I were travelling to DC this weekend, rather than last, I think I'd be sorely tempted to stage a two person counter protest.

horizontal rule
3

damn, that's probably going to get me spammed, isn't it?

horizontal rule
4

I'll take it out.

horizontal rule
5

I would love for a picture to be taken with that dude and another guy with a sign saying "No, Don't".

horizontal rule
6

Why am I reminded of the fake street signs on the intro sequence of What Not To Wear?

"Dark socks with shorts not permitted at any time."

horizontal rule
7

And, of course, the real counter protest:

Free Ahmad Chalabi

horizontal rule
8

What's the shirt say?

horizontal rule
9

If we were on Law & Order, we could have our tech zoom in and then magically remove the pixelization.

horizontal rule
10

But it might say something else.

horizontal rule
11

"? ? ? ? ? ? ? of a great civilization"

horizontal rule
12

"We are at or near the apex of a great civilization."

—Charles Munger, 2005 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting

horizontal rule
13

Holy shit, that's it. Nice work.

horizontal rule
14

Supporting link.

horizontal rule
15

How did you figure it out?

horizontal rule
16

Regarding Munger's remark: according to the linked page,

(One of us noted Buffett responding that he did not feel that way.)

horizontal rule
17

You know Judith Miller has nothing but disdain for protestors. That guy should keep doing it.

horizontal rule
18

I got the "we are at" (so-so confidence) and "of a great civilization" (high confidence) and the word count from looking at the picture, and Google brought me home.

horizontal rule
19

Ok, I couldn't make out "we are at."

horizontal rule
20

Yeah, until I got that, I was knee-deep in Olmec scholarship.

horizontal rule
21

That dude's dress clearly indicates that he's an anti-Miller partisan.

horizontal rule
22

How so? Are you suggesting he's protesting ironically?

horizontal rule
23

Yes; no one would wear those socks and sandals in earnest.

horizontal rule
24

Would they wear them in O-earnest?

horizontal rule
25

I wouldn't put it past an officer of the Warren Buffett irregulars.

horizontal rule
26

Ogged, if 4 means you added w/d's URL to 2 to keep his e-mail from showing up, you need to do the same to 3.

horizontal rule
27

No, he had put his email address in the name field in 2. MT is supposed to keep robots from reading the address in the email field.

horizontal rule
28

It is? K3wl!

horizontal rule
29

An ill-behaved robot wouldn't have too much difficulty harvesting the address. No difficulty at all, really, since compliance with the rel="nofollow" attribute is voluntary.

horizontal rule
30

Yeah, but you know robots don't have to respect robots.txt, right?

horizontal rule
31

Isn't that what I said, more or less?

horizontal rule
32

Did I not italicize "supposed," people? Yeesh.

horizontal rule
33

Right, but I'm not sure Matt recognized the subtle point you were making.

horizontal rule
34

SB, it is, but when I wrote, you had not written.

horizontal rule
35

Actually, it's neither the nofollow nor robots.txt that is supposed to keep the address from being harvested. From MT:

If the spam_protect attribute is provided, the email address will be modified so as to prevent spambots from harvesting it. The web browser, however, will still display the email address properly. For example, if the email address is foo@bar.com, and you use
<$MTEntryAuthorEmail spam_protect="1"$>
the email address will be displayed as foo@bar.com;.

I didn't give assurances, because even the "modifications" are often readable by harvesters.

horizontal rule
36

oh, I thought it might be that (robots.txt doesn't really make sense). You'd think it would be pretty easy to make your address-miner convert entities to their equivalents.

horizontal rule
37

Ben, I see, sorry for the fuss.

horizontal rule
38

So, mightn't it still be to w/d's advantage to put his URL in 3?

horizontal rule
39

Yes.

horizontal rule
40

Let's just do an experiment and see if I get more spam in the coming days (this is not an invitation to add me to e-mail lists).

horizontal rule
41

I got spam supposedly from Nabokov-[something]@[somewebsite].com that I believe to be unfogged related.

horizontal rule
42

How can I become a fan club President?

Thanks,
D. Marie
