Is this (and I mean this quite literally) some sort of fiendish "stick it to the RIAA" plot? I mean, it very much has the air of "Come on, RIAA, sue me for raising money for disaster victims. I dare you; heck I double dare you".
From the looks of things, he had not considered that it is illegal until someone brought it up in the comments, at which point he decided "fuck it, let's help them."
Of course, if he'd followed the lead of our own Alameida, he could have avoided the wrath of the record companies by offering to send some unspecified gift tailored to your musical tastes, possibly socks or tropical fruit.

I think it's a fiendish plot to get people to donate to those in need.
