I'm working on it. Just got in after a 1400 mile drive, and now I'm battening down the hatches. Gusts are starting to appear, but clear skies right now.
Went on a roadtrip to do some siteseeing and backpacking. I didn't even know about this hurricane till friday or saturday night. Right now I'm feelin a bit of a zombie from hurrin' back. My location is fairly good, though, and preparations are about done. I'm concerned, but not real worried.
I ate at a great french bakery in Durango, Colorado, btw. Terrific baking and interior design (3 brick walls, 1 plaster, rustic wood, hanging chandaliers, antique furniture. A wonderful thing.)
I was just glad to see Tulane had updated their hurricane plans -- when I was there for Georges, they tried to pull that "vertical evacuation" crap and had all of the people who couldn't get out hunker down in the top floors of Sharp and Monroe.
If I were hypothetically taking a class with a prominent blogging law professor who is a visiting Prof. at my school this year (not Leiter, and not affiliated with Volokh's site), is there some reason I shouldn't drop him a comment wondering why he hasn't posted a syllabus yet? I may or may not have just done so.
Yes, we're all in the JSU gym. There are around 700 of us in here, playing cards, eating Pop-Tarts, and sleeping on the floor. Refugee camp with Wi-Fi.
I don't have one of these t-shirts, but I would wear it if I did.
Also, do you there's a big party going on in the superdome among the people who couldn't evacuate, sort of an apocalypse party, or is the mood more dour?
I don't have one of these t-shirts, but I would wear it if I did.
One of the best of the Law School Halloween Party costumes I witnessed during law school (apart from my own, a simple name tag that said "Reasonable Prudent Person") was a guy who had attached a mannequin arm to his shoulder so that he always had his hand raised. Another one I liked was the guy who went as Hawkins just by drawing a bunch of hair on his palm with a sharpie.
Of course, as should be obvious from the above examples, even the best Law School Halloween Party costumes barely rise to the level of lame.
But there was usually an open bar at the Halloween party, so things balance out.
Considering that a large number of the people who evacuated to the Superdome were sick, poor, homeless, and/or elderly and they were confiscating all drugs and alcohol at the door, I vote for dour. Even my friends who were lucky enough to evacuate aren't treating this as the usual "let's get drunk and watch the Weather Channel" event.
From a scan of various reports, it looks like there's a chance New Orleans will basically cease to exist. Is that an exaggeration, or a realistic worst case?
Realistic worst case. Did you see the bulletins put out by the weather service earlier? I've never seen anything like it:
MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.
THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. ...ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. ...
HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT.
AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. ...
POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.
The lore among people who live there is that the city will be wiped out by a direct strike by a Category 3. A Cat 5 - forget it. It's being below sea level that's the killer. When I lived there, we had 8' of flooding just from a tropical storm. It was enough to total my boyfriend's car and flood out his apartment. It was disgusting, too -- the water was full of bugs and it drove all of the nutria into people's homes.
So, the impression I have is the storm turned enough that NO is basically safe -- this is going to be bad, but not the "no more city" scenario. Is that the impression other people are getting, or am I overconfident?
I'm reading that one levee has been breached, sending 3-8 feet of water into the 9th Ward. Also, two pieces of the Superdome roof have been ripped off.
Isn't there some potential that if the wrong levee goes out, the Mississippi could carve itself a new channel to the Gulf, leaving NO without a river to be at the mouth of?
Tim must be on hiatus.

Well, of course.

I think apostropher's link clearly shows that he and Michael have some "sittin' in a tree" in their future, if you know what I mean.
Chopper and I, on the other hand, have a strictly Platonic relationship.

Nope, wasn't on a bender!
As for 5; whatever, Mitch. Bakers are always the ones "making it rise" and then "putting it in the oven," IYKWIM, AITYD.

Also, are you on, or at least moving towards, high ground now?

Best of luck, Michael. I've been through plenty of hurricanes, but nothing like that one. This is one godawful time of the year not to have power.

Sorry, Chopper. But ever since I saw you in the delivery room like that, my romantic attraction to you has vanished.

Hurricane! On my first day at college, a mandatory evacuation of the city was ordered.

L.! You're alive! From the look of things, you're about to get a long vacation.
They don't have vacations in Minnesota, you know.

maybe Judy will show up now, fresh from her own bender.

OMG, L! I've been wondering about you. Where did you evacuate to? I read they were bussing people to Jackson State U.

My non-(law school) version of that costume was to flip up the collar on my shirt and tape a sign to my back that said, "asshole."

You know, Galveston used to rival NO as both a prosperous port and a party scene, until the big one hit in 1900, killing something like 8,000.
I hope things go better for New Orleans this time around.
