Re: Skylab

NBC should be running "the more you know" commercials with this information. It's nice to try to keep kids from failing out of school or contracting genital warts or what have you, but what are the odds that a 15-second commercial is going to accomplish any of that?

They'd be much better suited to improving our lives in little ways like this.

Yeah, thanks for the awesome tip, Ogged.

Recently, one of the automated women asked me if I would like to leave a personalized text message.

What? Why the fuck would anybody want to leave a text message when they could be leaving a voicemail at this very moment!?

Get a landline? Ogged, are you some kind of Communist? Or are you just trying to ensure that you'll never have to date a woman (or interact with another human being)?

As an imminent Cingular user, though, thanks for the tip.

I don't own a cell phone precisely because the idea of people being able to contact me all the time gives me a case of the jibblies. But then I have commie tendencies and my dating days are past.

The link on "date a woman" is important--I'm not saying that every non-cell phone straight man/lesbian is doomed to die alone. Just Ogged.

Sam K,

What? Why the fuck would anybody want to leave a text message when they could be leaving a voicemail at this very moment!?

Ask Stephen Hawking.

8

Matt, I'm cell-only, but a lot of my cell-to-cell conversations are about half "Sorry, say that again."

horizontal rule
9

Because you need a real service provider.

horizontal rule
10

What, you know of some supersecret awesome provider?

horizontal rule
11

Verizon been berry, berry good to me. Cingular, I've always heard, is the worst service available.

horizontal rule
12

Cingular is working OK for me, but I've owned a cell phone all of 20 minutes, so.

horizontal rule
13

Congratulations, Kriston, welcome to modern life. You can call me for free!

horizontal rule
14

I'm on Verizon and I think they have the annoying leave-your-number call back option.

horizontal rule
15

I think it all depends on what city/region you're in. But yeah, here in DC verizon is king for coverage. It even works on the subway.

I'm on cheapo t-mobile, but even that works fine in the city.

horizontal rule
16

Yeah, I'm liking what I've seen of the 20th century so far. But I bought the cheapest phone, and it's missing some options and has some real drawbacks. I was initially attracted to one phone on purely aesthetic grounds, but it was also the most expensive model, and I thought it would be a little ostentatious. Now that I know that the cheapie I bought actually lacks several functions, I think I might return it and splurge.

My prejudice is that Motorolas are very sexy but crappily constructed. What are the features you're wanting?

horizontal rule
18

Features that, well, probably every phone besides mine has: the ability to adjust the number of rings before the call goes to voicemail. I'd like bigger buttons, and I want a clamshell design. Got any recs?

horizontal rule
19

wow. you really are playing out the part of this onion article perfectly.

gotta warn you though, when you sign up they cut you a deal on your phone. odds are that now that they already own your soul outright they might not be as amiable.

My buddy Pete has the Razr and loves it.

I have the new Palm 7100t, and the reception is for crap.

horizontal rule
21

They should change it if he just got it, especially if he wants a more expensive one. They do have some 30-day change-your-mind period, as I recall.

The voicemail setting I would guess isn't set on the phone, but by the network. I'll see if I can find an answer. As for the phone itself, if button size matters to you, then go to a store and play with the phones. Some of them look great, but feel crappy in your hand. Mine looks stupid, but I liked how it felt in my hand, and love the feel of the buttons.

I have 15 days left to upgrade the terms and technology of my contract with the devil. Before the blood dries, you could say.

horizontal rule
23

If you can figure out these instructions, you'll be all set, but I'll look for instructions that actually instruct.

horizontal rule
24

Aha, try ronnieg's instructions here. (Or just call a rep with a clue.)

horizontal rule
25

Hey, that worked. Thanks, Ogged and Internets.
