Re: The Measure

1

But you're way higher up in the Kneepad Aficionado Society.

horizontal rule
2

I'm not trying to knock Yglesias in any way, and I don't want to be accused of siding with Tom Hilde. BUT is it really fair to equate intelligence with the quantity of material produced?

horizontal rule
3

Oh, to live in Yglesias's world, where there is a positive correlation between blog posts and productivity.

horizontal rule
4

We are not going to have a repeat of the Homer thread.

horizontal rule
5

of course not- no Homers allowed.

horizontal rule
6

if I take part in nothing greater than that thread in this life time, I will die a very sad, disappointed man.

horizontal rule
7

Doesn't that imply that you haven't yet taken part of anything greater than that thread in your lifetime thus far? And isn't that equally sad?

horizontal rule
8

You just think that because Yglesias went to Harvard.

horizontal rule
9

now we really are repeating the thread.

horizontal rule
10

I want his cloning machine. That's the only way he could possibly do it.

horizontal rule
11

Now, I read most of that thread. Which comments are being repeated?

horizontal rule
12

See . . . if you don't waste time "checking your spelling" and shit you, too, could be blogging at the speed of light like me.

horizontal rule
13

Or else Yglesias is on the juice.

horizontal rule
14

OTOH, you're off-point on the Bennett bit, MY. So let's call it eight good pieces today. Still beating Hilde!

horizontal rule
15

the part where intended implications are presented as unintended implications.

horizontal rule
16

I'd like the record to show that I still stand by my kneepads comment.

horizontal rule
17

I think that Ezra and Yglesias are fusing into one blogging hivemind over at TAPPED. I used to be able to identify all of the contributors by their subject lines and the first few words of their posts. Now that Ezra's in the mix, my system's all to hell.

horizontal rule
18

15: ahh. Well, my point was that 6 seems to collapse in on itself because it only even makes half-sense if the implications were not intended. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Only it makes my poor little head spin in circles.

horizontal rule
19

Who the fuck is Tom Hilde and why does his existence justify that of Kneepaddular Ogged?

horizontal rule
20

For Tom Hilde, you can start with this post and comments.

horizontal rule
21

I think it's important to recognize that while Tom Hilde can't do what Yglesias does, Yglesias can't do what Tom Hilde does either. It's not a contest. Each man is impressive in his own way, and, frankly, we lack the analytical tools to say whose contribution is ultimately more valuable.

horizontal rule
22

As I recall, we didn't even have the tools to say what it was that Tom Hilde was doing.

horizontal rule
23

to be a douche, and never troubled by the fact, no matter how obvious, is a strength, and I shall call it Hildean.

horizontal rule
24

Re: 22

My point exactly! Yglesias, although admittedly bright, is just so damned legible. It's all bells and whistles with him. You read a comment from Hilde and you think to yourself: "Wait, what the hell just happened?" Yglesias never has that effect.

horizontal rule
25

What Ogged is saying is that when it comes to Yglesias, you don't have to choose between quantity and quality. You get them both. In fact, Yglesias puts out hard colums so often, you can probably get as much as you can take, and you'll come away a little dazed and giving off that afterglow of erudition.

horizontal rule
26

It's almost as if Michael can read my mind, if my mind were different, and not mine.

horizontal rule
27

(I'll adjust the aim on my mind reading antenna.)

THe question on everyone's mind, though, is to which time-management programme does Yglesias subscribe? Clearly, he gets things done.

horizontal rule
28

programme

I guess you deserve credit for one where I can't tell whether it's your characteristic misspelling, or if you're putting on airs.

horizontal rule
29

It should be pointed out, in case Tom Hilde is reading, that Matt Y can bench 285lbs, do 30 pull-ups, runs a 4:30 mile, and can pleasure Tom Hilde's wife in under a minute.

horizontal rule
30

28: Then I won't ruin it by letting you know.

horizontal rule
31

My previous comment does remind me of a real situation, beginning of sophomore year in HS, when I was part of the same atheltic group as the kid who the year before had set a record for highest grades ever for a freshman, something like a 99.7 at the end of the year. Anyway, he demonstrated proper push-ups for us. He quit at 60, though it was clear he could do more. It was awhile before I reovered from witnessing how inferior I was.

horizontal rule
32

You all got together and jumped him after school, right?

horizontal rule
33

No, he was also popular. (And very good-looking.)

horizontal rule
34

Is there a punchline, Michael?

horizontal rule
35

60 push-ups is a lot of push-ups.

horizontal rule
36

Marine-style, too.

horizontal rule
37

Several college friends and I went to a dance club with several members of a professional dance troupe that was performing at UNC. That was most inferior I'd ever felt.

horizontal rule
38

No punchline, I think. The very top schools didn't accept from my HS that year and he ended up at U Va?

horizontal rule
39

Nope, that's the punchline. Thanks.

horizontal rule
40

So what is Garance's big, shameful secret?

horizontal rule
41

It's a secret, John.

horizontal rule
42

Come on. Everyone know but me.

horizontal rule
43

I'm not telling!

horizontal rule
44

She's a faux lesbian? She's not a vegan? She rides with the Hell's Angels? She has Sugar Pops for breakfast? Stuffed animals?

horizontal rule
45

Well, I don't think she's a vegan....

horizontal rule
46

Garance is a babe.

horizontal rule
47

I think GFR is pretty studly, too. I bet even Hilde thinks she's a stud. There should be a cage match of some sort - MY vs. GFR.

horizontal rule
48

As I recall, we didn't even have the tools to say what it was that Tom Hilde was doing.

Nobody wanted to pick up the bait? Really?

horizontal rule
49

She's a man, baby, a man!

horizontal rule
50
