Re: Terror On The Roads

I came around a corner just now,

I think I've got your problem figured out -- the whole blogging while driving thing? Not so much a good idea.

horizontal rule
2

LB, I put stuff like that in for the newbies to pick up and make themselves feel at home; I expect the old-timers to be a little more industrious.

horizontal rule
3

What's worse is that I was late to work because I had to double back to hit him at the next crosswalk.

Not your best work, ogged.

horizontal rule
4

Not your best work, ogged.

Indeed. Next time, first try, no do-overs.

horizontal rule
5

with my windshield fogging up

Next time, turn on your Unfogger. Then you'll be sure not to miss.

horizontal rule
6

Indeed. Next time, first try, no do-overs.

Somehow, that made me wonder: Wouldn't you think there would be a decent market for a multiplayer Frogger-like video game in which you could choose to be a frog or a driver?

horizontal rule
7

Grand Theft Auto?

Also, Carmageddon, a game I used to play back in middle school. Fun times.

horizontal rule
8

Perhaps a version of Grand Theft Auto with the option of playing an armed pedestrian?

horizontal rule
9

What's worse is that I was late to work because I had to double back to hit him at the next crosswalk.

And I'll just bet he wasn't grateful either.

Matt F:

I have no knowledge of anything in the video-game market that happened after the advent of the Atari 5200. You can be one of the guys getting run over in GTA? If that's true, and there is still a a sex-mod for the game, is there really any doubt that GTA is a national resource that should be available to all Americans? Shouldn't the Dems explicitly adopt this position before the Republicans do?

horizontal rule
11

No multiplayer mode, I was just saying there are (separate) games where you could be either the frog (Frogger) or the driver (GTA). Not at the same time though.

I did play a game that involved storming a fortified beach; in multiplayer mode, one person was the invader and one was the defender. Rather fun, actually. The characters were cats and mice.

12

I came around a corner just now

I understand this takes considerable skill. Those years of practice must finally be paying off.

horizontal rule
13

My spurtings are as god's very own beams of light.

horizontal rule
14

Matt F misled me. The youth of today have no sense of decency at all. OTOH, a market awaits for some lucky creator. Wolfson, you're wasting all that time at grad school. Can't you whip something up?

Totally OT: Were I a woman, I would have Mark Schmitt's baby. So smart, so well-informed, so sane.

horizontal rule
15

Dude, Mark Schmitt's baby is smarter and better-informed than us.

horizontal rule
16

Perhaps a version of Grand Theft Auto with the option of playing an armed pedestrian?

My Castle, My Keep 2: Jacksonville.

horizontal rule
17

Totally OT: Were I a woman, I would have Mark Schmitt's baby. So smart, so well-informed, so sane.

Uh oh, Sirota attack to commence in five... four...

horizontal rule
18

And now I understand the lyrics to "Jacksonville," on this Sufjan Stevens album you may have heard I like:

"I'm not afraid of the black man running

He's got it right, he's got a better [extra?] life coming...

I'm not afraid to get it right

I turn around and give it one more try [hitting reset, obviously]...

Andrew Jackson! All I'm asking

Show us the [steering] wheel and give us the wine"

It's about the video game, clearly.

And the rest of the songs on the MCMK2:JAX soundtrack are here

beams of light

The sharper the angle, the higher the index of refraction, so it's not like there isn't a tradeoff.

horizontal rule
21

I'm resigned about that.

horizontal rule
22

The sharper the angle, the higher the index of refraction, so it's not like there isn't a tradeoff.

Is that right? I thought the index of refraction was purely a function of the material involved.

horizontal rule
23

purely a function of the material involved

Yeah, I took some cockjokic license with the physics.

horizontal rule
24

When is day 729 projected to be?

horizontal rule
25

Two or three months, I think.

horizontal rule
26

You know what'll happen when ogged gets over his hump slump? This blog will start sliding headlong into mediocrity. Look at what happened to Sarah McLachlan's music post-nuptials. I have seen the future in all its mellow greatest-hits, live-album decline. Chastity is the beacon of quality!

horizontal rule
27

Wasn't that a Seinfeld episode?

horizontal rule
28

And a Christian doctrine?

horizontal rule
29

Slept in, had breakfast (toast). Was good. What is everyone else doing today?

It's gonna Rokk.

horizontal rule
30

Working? Getting pwned by work, even. Then poker.

horizontal rule
31

29 - Your morning goes from "horrible and stupid" to "good" in the course of 3 hours? That's some quick historical revisionism there.

horizontal rule
32

It's gonna Rokk.

Like, Marika Rokk?

horizontal rule
33

I was writing from inside Standpipe's crystal ball, Becks.

horizontal rule
34

Should have put in some kind of wavy dream delimiters, in retrospect.

horizontal rule
35

Toast? shouldn't you make her eggs or something? Or take her out for brunch?

horizontal rule
36

But toast is boring, which is what Standpipe sees.

horizontal rule
37

#29 should have included, "Walked my shaggy dog."

horizontal rule
38

Yes, it's when he walks his shaggy dog that we expect this transition to take place.

horizontal rule
39

And all this time I thought "being in the doghouse" was a bad thing!

horizontal rule
40

Toast is also notable for its partisan affiliation. I considered putting an apostrophe in "its" to annoy Ben, but the problem is that I make too many accidental errors for my faux (because intentional) errors to be appreciated.

horizontal rule
41

"being in the doghouse" s/b being "in the doghouse"

horizontal rule
42

You know, the whole Tivo thing implies that ogged and his ex had sex the very day ogged disconnected the Tivo.

horizontal rule
43

I had the same thought when I first found out what the whole "Tivo" thing meant.

I believe the answer is "breakup sex".

horizontal rule
44

Or perhaps the answer is "shit, there's nothing on tv."

horizontal rule
45

Maybe it was the TiVo guy?

horizontal rule
46

I apologize if that's been said twelve times before. Which it seems like it should have been.

horizontal rule
47

729 is a nice number because it's 3**6, and 1000 less than the smallest number expressible as the sum of the cubes of two positive numbers two different ways.

But more than this, it has a nice physiognomy.

horizontal rule
48

It's also two years less a day.

horizontal rule
49

Facist!

horizontal rule
50

[hands in the air]

Physiognomies! Hooray!

horizontal rule
51

Facist!

[hands in the air] Physiognomies! Hooray!

The movement has become fairly organized. They have a salute and a ritual greeting. Wach for signs of outgroup scapegoating.

horizontal rule
52

Tia, why do you try so to sabotage the Mineshaft of national victory?

horizontal rule
53

I did that once, except I came so terrifyingly close to hitting the pedestrian that I actually sideswiped her shoulder bag and broke the strap on it. She was so distraught, in fact, that she refused my offers to replace the bag, or even give her my name or phone number. Which was probably lucky for me.

horizontal rule
54

Slept in, had breakfast (toast). Was good. What is everyone else doing today?

This morning I did one of my favorite things - entertained over a thousand second-graders by doing a little stage magic. They LOVE the fire in the hand!

They are actually the best audience for this little show (The Nutcracker). Considering that I didn't even used to like kids I think I must be softening up in my old age.

horizontal rule
55

I slept in until noon, bought some roast beef and prepared and ate some delicious sammiches, and now I'm gearing up to think about metaphor!

horizontal rule
56

Can we please get that other thread off of the latest comments? It's like an undying zombie, and I'm worried it's going tBRAINS

horizontal rule
57

Toast? shouldn't you make her eggs or something?

Dude, she can make her own eggs.
