Man this is weird -- I had a dream the other night (not blogged because (a) I didn't remember enough of it and (b) the parts I did remember were mostly explicit in a way I don't like to wallow in -- which included a scene of looking at the Unfogged front page and seeing way more bloggers listed than I remembered being there before. And the new ones were mostly names I recognized from the Unfogged comments section! (Except Speak-speak, which turned out to be the new blogging handle of mcmc -- turns out my dream was not prescient in this regard but still it's pretty trippy.)
Is it because of the addictive quality of Unfogged that you're quitting cold turkey, rather than allowing for occasionally dropping in? Hmm, maybe if I rtfp I would know it would be smart to email this question. Also, if you want teh content from your new bloggers, maybe someone could email us (or at least me) and tell us how to post? Hmm, maybe this is also better addressed in email.
But earnestly Ogged, thank you for creating this space. It really is fun, and helping other people have fun should not be overlooked as one of the great things a person can do in life. You are wizard cocksucker.
Is it pathetic that my heart accelerated when I started reading this post? Maybe or maybe not, but I appreciate that you've put as much effort into this place as you have. It won't be the same.
I'm sorry to say he's deadly serious. I was going to hang it up too, but Alameida persuaded us to go with the expanded lineup, mainly because the comments are so good.
Ogged, best of luck and thank you so much for creating this amazing community. I'm truly going to miss you here. Under any other circumstances, being invited to post would have made me feel like Charlie Bucket finding out he won the factory at the end of Willie Wonka but knowing you won't be around anymore makes it, at most, bittersweet. Best wishes.
-gg-d, what an accomplishment to have set up this space! Sorry to see you go. I hope the second generation of Unfogged posters are going to be able to fill your "shoes".
Typical Ogged -- he steals my idea to take it down a notch and simultaneously bring in greater group participation, then does me one better by leaving altogether.
"Why stand you looking into the sky, commenters? This same Ogged, who was received from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven."
And Becks, excellent thought to compare Unfogged to Wonka's factory. We are but Oompa-Loompas in the hands of an angry -gg-d. Or something like that. How can I work Norman Mailer into this?
That's a bummer, but I can't say I'm totally surprised. And somehow I believe it will stick (feel free to prove me wrong).
Just reading this drove home how consuming managing unfogged must be. I look lately and see comment threads of 300, and I just can't summon the energy to read them, though they're often still as funny as hell.

Damn, I'm bummed, although I'm really glad to hear about the new front-pagers. LizardBreath will be awesome. (Well, they all will.)
I hope that you'll come back for an occasional visit--especially when some cool new technology thing arrives. An occasional comment would be much appreciated. And if you ever make it to Boston, jvance/tweedledopey, any lurkers and I will have to host you for a meet-up.
I was just looking for the comment eb linked to in 46.
It's sad because I, like everyone else, looked to unfogged for a daily dose of levity and community.
But, on another level, it isn't surprising. Blogs have a life cycle. Running a blog like this requires constant tending and at some point it's time to go and do something different.
Ogged -- you were a fabulous host, we're all sad to see you go, hopefully you can enjoy yourself without us.
Hm, apostropher is ging to have to do the cock jokes all by himself. The feminization of America proceeds apace. Call Bill Bennett or whoever it is that does that meme.
Best wishes, and you held out as long as anyone should.
Man. This sucks for us. ogged, you brought a certain je ne sais quoi to this joint. And I really mean a je ne sais quoi bc I'm trying to describe what I'll miss about having you posting and commenting and I can't quite do it.
Man, talk about stage fright -- it's all safe and cozy down here in the comments box. People I don't know actually read the posts.
I didn't realize that Ogged was planning not even to comment -- that completely stinks, and I'll miss him; he's run a great blog. I just hope we don't run the place into the ground before he relents and comes back. (I see this as an "Ogier the Dane" type story. Someday, when the Internet's need is greatest, Ogged will return!)
And I really mean a je ne sais quoi bc I'm trying to describe what I'll miss about having you posting and commenting and I can't quite do it.
Ogged was always the perfect host. One of the traits common to both blog commenters and acadmics is a brittle competativeness. I think part of how unfogged was able to maintain a balance between enjoying cutting comments and one-upsmanship while keeping a strong feeling of camaraderie is that ogged was so willing to play the straight man.
We all knew that it was okay to be teased because the entire purpose of the blog was teasing ogged.
Ogged, you bastard, I will hunt you down and make you pay for this. Don't let your guard down, even for a second.
That's the non-prissy way to say it, people! Seriously, thanks for the good times, don't forget to write (say, if you're in a meetup-possible place), and may you find piece.
Unfogged is dead, long live unfogged! First proposal: SB gets posting privileges too.
I was trying to find the answer to Cala's question in 11, but after looking through the first couple weeks of comments and then realizing I had acutal work to do, I can't find the authentic first-in-time comment from either apo or b-wo, one of whom, by dint of service, presumably currently embodies the essence of unfogged.
Not that it won't be entirely thrilling to read whole posts from many of my favorite commenters. I second the move to give Standpipe posting privileges, if Standpipe so desires.
Second Bostoniangirl. Second vote for Standpipe. More Standpipe!
(This comment is in no way to be construed as constituting acceptance of Ogged's departure. I am still in mourning, and shall not give up my weeds so soon.)
Ogged, so long, farewell, and thanks. Unfogged is the bestest imaginary gay bar blog on the whole internet, and much of the credit goes to you. Your leather chaps Speedos will hang from the rafters forevermore.
And congrats to the new ruling junta crew of front page bloggers.
As many times as I've quit my own blog, I've never been able to quit Unfogged. It's sad to see you go ogged, but I look forward to the new posters who, I should note, are not technically co-bloggers and thus should not be subject to the rule that co-bloggers fall silent. Hopefully.
New posters: I say you draw lots and the winner (loser?) has to post first.
Arms, I'll still be here. After all, I gotta figure out someway to drive everyone away from unfogged and to jvance. but then again, that'd require posting something relevant i guess. plus, i think maintaining 1 bajillion comments would suck. so i'll stay here, and make it suck for teh ogged junta.
Smasher, I'll be here too. Dr. B wasn't nominating me for posting privileges. (I'd be pretty awful, since I get most of my news filtered through blogs anyway.)
86 was seconding my proposal in 84 to put LG&M on the blogroll.
B, T, A, LB, BWo: Traitors! Sure, you say now that you know what it's like to be a commenter, and how could you forget about a commenter's concerns?, but soon enough the sidebar will look like a Michelle Malkin linkdump. Traitors! The rest of us will be down below, down in the nasty, and we're keeping an eye on you.
well, because they will be affected, more or less, by the district they currently reside in, and not the district they commited the crime in or used to reside in. now, if you wanted to change the census based on how long they will be in prison, I'd be all for that. but enough of this legal person counting mumbo jumbo.
I'll still be a commenter. I think there's a kind of strict settlement involved in the torch-passing that prohibits me, ever, from being invited to be an Unfogged blogger. Thank god, b/c I've got my own goddamn blog.
But hey, in the bushes with y'all? Way, way more fun.
This is so sad! I mean, the new bloggers are great and all. But it just won't be the same. You're the only one who actually ever read my comments! Also, I doubt that the new bloggers will be as eager to equate intellectual honesty with the willingness to air one's least flattering opinions.
Sorry to be so callous, but isn't this the weblog that doesn't need webloggers, where all the cool action goes on in the comments? You could just replace Ogged with one of those automatic open thread generators like Atrios uses, only with racier keywords, and presto...Unfogged-o-matic!
(OK, seriously, this is sad news. Unfogged was one of the first weblogs I picked up on, way back in the day when I started my own weblog.)
I'll still be here in the comments, even though I've been absent of late due to too much fucking work. The one thing to mitigate the sadness is the awesomeness of the new co-bloggers.
It's a good sign that LB got 50 comments so soon. I have noticed that while Alameida have some of the best posts, they don't usually get that many comments.
Yo, all - I set this to appear at the top of the page through the end of the day so that people who are just now showing up can figure out WTF is going on. New posts will show up under this one.
w/d - I know. I debated. I sent an email out to get input from the others and got another vote for making it sticky so I went for it. I must say, there are some benefits to Ogged's benevolent dictatorship. Much less second-guessing oneself, I assume.
At last, I've given this enough considerate thought to write my thoughtful, mature, sincere response to this abrupt news.
Dearest Ogged,
YOU'RE LEAVING ME? YOU THINK IT'S THAT SIMPLE? YOU THINK YOU CAN JUST UP AND LEAVE? FUCK YOU, PAL! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT: FUCK. YOU. You know what? I never really loved you. I was just using you! I NEVER RESPECTED YOU! And. And, guess what? I WAS CHEATING ON YOU! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! SO GO AHEAD AND LEAVE! I don't NEED YOU! I don't WANT YOU! Just GO AHEAD AND LEAVE! I DON'T CARE!!!
Hey if you guys are going to monkey with the color scheme, why not also add a subtitle such as, "The Whole World's Only Source For Unfogged! (Unf and Ogged no longer available)"
How about a standpipe and text amalgam? I'm sure StandText would agree to it.
If someone ran text and me through the amalgmotron, I think you'd get a Textpipe or a Textplate. Whereas you would click on StandText with an IntelliMouse.
While it's the comments that make this site really special, I also like the entries--both what they say and what they call attention to. I'm bummed that Ogged's doing this.
To me, the reason ogged leaving sucks so much is that his posts formed the infrastructure of unfogged. I love reading the other authors' stuff, but ogged's entries were unique in their economy of length and style. And they were almost always about either a) topics on which the commentariat was likely to have at least two defensible opinions; or b) Mineshaftellania.
Plus, the guy was uniquely diplomatic in comments, lulling dopes like myself into participating in conversations that can be pretty intimidating. I'm not sure how much of that came naturally and how much was a deliberate effort to make strangers feel welcome. If it was more of the latter, I can see how someone might get sick of doing it.
Anyway, here's selfishly hoping his source of reliable sex disappears and he comes crawling back to us internet weirdos.
Thanks, Ogged, for having had the will power to set this up and stay with it for so long. This place has changed a good deal of my outlook in the last year.
No way I'm reading 195 comments before posting a comment.
I wrote the following on another blog, which doesn't permalink comments. Might as well repost it here:
"...forgiving Ogged's decision to leave Unfogged, for example."
I'm disappointed, though it's hard to fault someone for such a decision.
But I've watched over that little blog since befre it went live (weeks before), since when they first started experimenting with a template, and all it said was "this will go here; that will go there," they used my blog, and mine alone, as a sample of the blogroll, which is how I found it, and in those days, M-, Ogged would write me with touching requests for advice about How To Blog, and I would offer my fatherly advice in e-mail.
Eventually the blog wandered into something far afield from what it was in its first year or so, and while it was a valuable and good thing it turned into, providing a unique venue for those it was most attuned to, I never felt myself at more than the fringes of that zeitgeist, but it was a good and unique thing for those closer to the core, nontheless.
Now there will be no one there who was present at the creation, and that selfishly saddens me a bit.
Not that I've not watched several other group blogs long ago make that transition. (Kesher Talk, for instance).
I remember when Volokh was a singleton, and had no Conspiracy. I remember when Glenn Reynolds was sane. I remember when all of us small number of polibloggers all knew each other, and all were blogging in a frame in which while we had small differences of opinion, none were so far afield that we couldn't think we were in it together. After a couple of years, echo-chambers took over, and small differences became huge, and it seems as if half the people went insane. Christ, I remember when LGF was -- I know this is hard to believe now -- a perfectly sane and calm place.
I can't say that the blogosphere has actually improved with growth and age, much though there are innumerable valuable new voices, to be sure. But overall: sadly, no.
I'm starting to feel a bit old in the blogosphere, and it's only been a freaking four and a half years, for god's sake. And I'm not first generation nor second. It's worse than dog years.
I'm sad. Ogged is gone, and Pharyngula is gone, and Kotsko is limiting his posts, and . . . Bitch, that latest post of yours is so ominous. O blogs of my life, I need you to love me, I need you to stay. Is love so fragile, is the heart so hollow?
See the second window, where the glow of the television screen is flickering? I used to live there twenty years agao, seeing a girl by the name of Celine.
Good to see you again, Gary. I was wondering if you'd abandoned Unfogged in anger after Ogged had threatened to strangle you if you made one more revelation about your sexual history. (At least that's my recollection, although I can't seem to find the comment in question.)
(I'd leave some sniffs and sighs for Unf, but when's the last time that guy posted here, anyway? And I'm impressed by the new lineup. But still. Sniff. Sigh. Sniff).
sob... but you'll be back to comment, right?

Man, talk about stage fright -- it's all safe and cozy down here in the comments box. People I don't know actually read the posts.
I didn't realize that Ogged was planning not even to comment -- that completely stinks, and I'll miss him; he's run a great blog. I just hope we don't run the place into the ground before he relents and comes back. (I see this as an "Ogier the Dane" type story. Someday, when the Internet's need is greatest, Ogged will return!)
Posted by LizardBreath | Link to this comment | 01-30-06 12:50 PM
And I really mean a je ne sais quoi bc I'm trying to describe what I'll miss about having you posting and commenting and I can't quite do it.
Ogged was always the perfect host. One of the traits common to both blog commenters and acadmics is a brittle competativeness. I think part of how unfogged was able to maintain a balance between enjoying cutting comments and one-upsmanship while keeping a strong feeling of camaraderie is that ogged was so willing to play the straight man.
We all knew that it was okay to be teased because the entire purpose of the blog was teasing ogged.
Posted by NickS | Link to this comment | 01-30-06 12:51 PM

Sorry to be so callous, but isn't this the weblog that doesn't need webloggers, where all the cool action goes on in the comments? You could just replace Ogged with one of those automatic open thread generators like Atrios uses, only with racier keywords, and presto...Unfogged-o-matic!

Posted by John Emerson | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:54 AM

188 -- for the better or the worse? Or orthogonal to good/bad distinctions?

Are we going to get a new set of "Abouts" in the top left hand corner?
Posted by washerdreyer | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 1:36 PM
We better! That is the only we my premonitory dream can be realized.

Ok, this looks great, but will there be new fellowships available for those of us wanting to keep reading the comment threads?

"this" = the new Unfogged
Posted by eb | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 3:02 PM
J.O. I meant to imply "for the better."

Sorry to see you go, ogged, even though i suspect you're just one good cock joke away.
An era ends. Another begins. Someone play taps now while I weep silently.
By the way, I blame Wolfson.

Gary, are you saying you knew Unfogged before it sold out and went all commercial?
Posted by bitchphd | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 6:50 PM
I've been doing it for just over three years, Gary, and I feel like a grizzled veteran.

I'm sad. Ogged is gone, and Pharyngula is gone, and Kotsko is limiting his posts, and . . . Bitch, that latest post of yours is so ominous. O blogs of my life, I need you to love me, I need you to stay. Is love so fragile, is the heart so hollow?
Posted by j. | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 6:58 PM
I think pharyngula just moved.

See the second window, where the glow of the television screen is flickering? I used to live there twenty years agao, seeing a girl by the name of Celine.
This place has changed a lot.

I'm not quitting. I'm too fucking stubborn.
Posted by bitchphd | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:08 PM
Good to see you again, Gary. I was wondering if you'd abandoned Unfogged in anger after Ogged had threatened to strangle you if you made one more revelation about your sexual history. (At least that's my recollection, although I can't seem to find the comment in question.)
Posted by Frederick | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:11 PM
Hey, at least Farber has plentiful fodder, Fred.

Now that I am one of the co-bloggers, new rule: No one can be faulted for tiresomely nattering about their sex life!
Posted by Tia | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:16 PM
Gary is, actually, the owner of this blog by right.
Posted by text | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:17 PM
you aren't really a co-blogger until your name is on the left column.
Posted by text | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:18 PM
that's Gary's rule, and he owns this place.
Serial posting is to be encouraged.

Existential crisis, or narcissism? You decide.
Posted by bitchphd | Link to this comment | 01-31-06 7:51 PM
It means your crush on text is purely illusory. Return to me, Bitch, and all is forgiven.

I understand, ogged.
But, well. Sniff. Sigh. Sniff.
(I'd leave some sniffs and sighs for Unf, but when's the last time that guy posted here, anyway? And I'm impressed by the new lineup. But still. Sniff. Sigh. Sniff).
