Re: 31337

1

This means nothing to me. What dos it mean to say that you just replaced their code with a 5-line shell script? Did you just make the program more elegant?

horizontal rule
2

I replaced a 8,000 line program written in C with 5 lines of code written in perl.

horizontal rule
3

All while commenting on Unfogged. I know it's unseemly to brag but I felt like I earned my pay today for once.

horizontal rule
4

I hope your department's production isn't being measure by the number of lines of code produced.

horizontal rule
5

That does sound 31337.

horizontal rule
6

3: Nice link, Becks. It's only been a couple of days, but I'd already forgotten what a psycho ogged could be about certain social interactions. A nice psycho, a smart psycho, a good and just psycho, but still, in some areas...a psycho.

horizontal rule
7

You know, that "earned pay" thing--serves Ogged right for banning me, but he was totally right.

horizontal rule
8

I'm not going to get into it, B, but no, he was entirely, totally, frighteningly wrong.

horizontal rule
9

Nope. Right. And I'm shocked that y'all disagreed, honestly.

horizontal rule
10

I truly love Unfogged. Only on this site could a post about racial issues result in a comment thread about computers at the same time that a post about computers results in a discussion about racial issues.

horizontal rule
11

I can see why the UPS guy took the remark as offensive, but I'm sure the college kid didn't mean it that way. Ogged "hating on" the kid for what was at worst an unintentionally insensitive remark that he meant as a compliment seems a little extreme. And Ogged's banning of B, judging from what I saw reading the archives many months after the fact, was more than a little extreme.

horizontal rule
12

How do you get your hair to stand up in those two little points?

horizontal rule
13

10: Well taking this thread from computers to racial insensitivy is pretty remarkable, but I don't think that the Rangel quote--which has since turned into a thread about computers--is about racial insensitivity. It' just about what a moron W. is.

In fact, I think that he should get his own unique racial and national classification--the better to disown him with.

horizontal rule
14

Yeah, BG, I was reaching for the parallel but it still amused me.

horizontal rule
15

I missed that "earned pay" thread (and so many other threads and injokes I still don't know the meaning of) via not being around, but one thing I find interesting, after skimming the comments (reading most of them) is that Ogged kept maintaining that he was talking about an African-American UPS guy and a "white kid," and why didn't everyone understand that, but, in fact, in his post he merely wrote about an African-American UPS guy and a "student."

Apparently "student" means "white kid."

If Ogged were still here, he'd now be braining me.

"You know, that "earned pay' thing--serves Ogged right for banning me, but he was totally right."

Did he delete all your comments? I didn't see even one from you in that thread.

"Only on this site could a post...."

I don't mean to spoil the self-congrats, and be a bringdown, and all, and all serious as usual, but that's a pile of crap.

I guess I do mean to spoil the self-congrats, and be a bringdown. But not in a bad way.

Not that you shouldn't love the site and recent commenters. But get real. Or not.

horizontal rule
16

"Well taking this thread from computers to racial insensitivy is pretty remarkable...."

Similarly: I take it you guys were never on Usenet. Or any bright mailing list, pre-blogging, or one heck of a zillion different blogs or LiveJournals, or....

horizontal rule
17

Gary, for christ's sake.

horizontal rule
18

Sweet script Becks. Perl rules!

horizontal rule
19

15: Ogged said "honkey," Gary. That usually denotes whiteness.

horizontal rule
20

I replaced a 8,000 line program written in C with 5 lines of code written in perl.

It doesn't count if you just call out to the original program.

horizontal rule
21

"Ogged said "honkey," Gary. That usually denotes whiteness."

Actually, the word in the first 'graph was "honky," which I grant usually denotes paler-skinned people. I dunno what "honkey" denotes.

But I grant that I missed that, through haste, in the first paragraph and just read the actual anecdote:

I was a freshman in college, walking out of my dorm, and an African-American UPS guy was pulling his stacked hand-trolley step by step up the entranceway. Another student, watching, said to him, "You're earning your pay today."

Somehow, the driver didn't take the hand-trolley, brain the kid, and set off on a mission to brain his parents. He just said, "I earn my pay every day." But you're entirely correct, absent spelling, and I was wrong to have missed that. My bad.

"Gary, for christ's sake."

Not Christian. And, yeah, I'm kicking kittens and puppies again. I said I meant it "not in a bad way," but, sure, that's not magic dust. But it is actually possible to indulge in squeeing enthusiasm for something without saying stuff that's blatantly ridiculous. "I just love the Unfogged commenters for being so bright and kewl!" "I love that taking this thread from computers to racial insensitivy is entirely typical of this blog!" Or whatever.

Anyway, if responding that way is dreadfully offensive, or just tone-deaf of me and out of place, well, I'm giving a shot at seeing how my peg fits in the new hole, and if it doesn't, it doesn't.

horizontal rule
22

I agreed with ogged in that thread, but fell silent. There was work to do, and it is always more pleasing to make fun of ogged than to support him.

Now ogged is gone.

horizontal rule
23

Everyone loves it when someone goes up to them and says, in the most blunt and irascible way possible, "you're not special".

horizontal rule
24

I know I do.

horizontal rule
25

stick around Gary, just so long as you're insulting only half the time. Like me.

horizontal rule
26

OT, but someone has started a Rocket racing league.

horizontal rule
27

When my son was at Tufts, he said "The students aren't all white, but they might as well be". This is relevant to Gary's original huff, even though Gary huffed inappropriately.

horizontal rule
28

Now wait a minute! Was it a shell script or a perl script?

horizontal rule
29

15: The Bphd banning had nothing whatsoever to do with that thread, she was just saying that if she'd been around at that time she'd have been agreeing with ogged in that thread.

horizontal rule
30

A shell script is a mother-of-perl script.

horizontal rule
31

28 - Dammit. WMYBSALB, Wolfson? I really didn't want to have to go back in and edit that. Seriously - the second I hit post on that comment, my thought was "Crap - I really shouldn't have said 'shell script'. Oh well, nobody will catch it. Wait - Wolfson will."

horizontal rule
32

Now I don't have to edit the post anyway. If I do, nobody will understand your comment. Problem solved!

horizontal rule
33

STANDPIPE IS THE GREATEST

horizontal rule
34

NO! Fuck Standpipe! Apostropher is—huh.

horizontal rule
35

EVERYONE WHO WASN'T ON USENET IS BANNED.

horizontal rule
36

Sweet. I'm still here.

Hopefully, I can relax and enjoy some quiet now. Once I gag Gary and stuff him in the janitor's closet, that is.

I kid, I kid!

horizontal rule
37

I remember when we didn't have modems, so we had to shriek into the phone our own goddamned selves.

DEEDEEDEEDOODOODOOawwwwwwWEEawwwwwww, bitches!

horizontal rule
38

I had my manservant do it for me.

horizontal rule
39

Holy crap. I'm logged in.

horizontal rule
40

Damn. Banned from a blog I blog on. FL is swinging his (large, beautiful) newfound status as senior blogger around tonight.

horizontal rule
41

[redacted]

horizontal rule
42

I remember when we had to walk up hill both ways just to use the tin can phone internet.

horizontal rule
43

Did Standpipe just discover a new superpower?

horizontal rule
44

Would you like to play a game Professor Falken?

horizontal rule
45

And I remember every dreaded September, when the college punks would hook up their can without cleaning the food out first, or forget the fishing line, or etc. etc.

horizontal rule
46

Back in my early days, the only way to pwn was to compare cock sizes. WHAT?!

horizontal rule
47

Would you like to play a game Professor Falken?

Yes. Let's play global thermonuclear war dance dance revolution.

horizontal rule
48

How about a nice game of grow up to have sex with Sarah Jessica Parker?

horizontal rule
49

Becks, that is totally pwsome. You ought to buy yourself this shirt (inexact though it may be).

These tokens of nerd-cred are important. The thing I miss about my old job the most is my phone extension -- purely by accident, it was 1337. And our login names went last name + first initial. Yeah, that was pretty great.

horizontal rule
50

The only winning move...is not to play! I suspect that applies to this thread as well.

horizontal rule
51

Fuck you all. I invented the internet.

horizontal rule
52

the other winning move is to build a robot pterodactyl.

horizontal rule
53

Tom, that's hilarious. It almost would have been worth keeping the job for that. Almost.

horizontal rule
54

And I just realized I am totally showing my age in this thread - I just googlefought 31337 vs. 1337 and 31337 got crushed. Back in my day, we typed the extra digit and we liked it!

horizontal rule
55

"OT, but someone has started a Rocket racing league."

You can't troll me that easily.

"Hopefully, I can relax and enjoy some quiet now. Once I gag Gary and stuff him in the janitor's closet, that is."

Careful, or I'll talk about my sex life again.

"How about a nice game of grow up to have sex with Sarah Jessica Parker?"

But first Helen Hunt.

horizontal rule
56

"How about a nice game of grow up to have sex with Sarah Jessica Parker?"

But first Helen Hunt.

Emphatically. Sarah Jessica Parker? Yuck.

horizontal rule
57

Zeros! You had zeros?

horizontal rule
58

Remember, remember, eternal september

AOL, Usenet, and plot!

horizontal rule
59

I remember trying to program in pearl. It took forever for the damn oysters to compile.

horizontal rule
60

Helen fucking Hunt? are you guys kidding me? not like I want to fuck SJP all that bad, but Helen Hunt is one of the 20 most annoying people of all time. she's Meg Ryan annoying.

horizontal rule
61

SJP has such a wonderfully large face.

horizontal rule
62

I never quite got my head around this whole "spelling with numbers" thingy. Is 31337 code for "Elite"? anad 1337 the same word but with a virtual apostrophe replacing the initial 'E'?

horizontal rule
63

Sarah Jessica Parker

horizontal rule
64

63: In fairness to SJP, dude looks like a lady.

horizontal rule
65

Becks, as Sarah Jessica Parker's lone defender I must say, that is one unattractive picture.

Maybe we should add Sarah Jessica Parker to the FAQ.

horizontal rule
66

We could give her an 'About' page.

horizontal rule
67

scripting languages are to text files what c and fortran are to math.

horizontal rule
68

Matthew Broderick had sex with Helen Hunt? I did not know that.

horizontal rule
69

I am completely unable to divorce SJP from her character on SATC. As someone who wants to smack girls who act that way in the face, that makes me hard to appreciate her.

horizontal rule
70

i always thought broderick was teh gay.

horizontal rule
71

Could be, matty.

horizontal rule
72

he set off ye olde gaydar when i saw him strolling around a while back.

his kid is most definitely teh cute, though.

horizontal rule
73

69: You and Wing Chun both, Becks. (Also applies to 71.)

horizontal rule
74

69: "that makes me hard to appreciate her"

Is there something you haven't been telling us, Becks?

horizontal rule
75

Gosh, no one has answered Osner's 62 yet. It's like this: the numbers are code for their alphabetical position. In "31337" 3 is 'c', 1 is 'a', 33 = 10 + 9 + 14 = 'jin', and 7 = 'g'. It's 'ca-jing,' a distorted version of 'ka-ching', signifying that the programmer is money.

"1337" is of course m-e-g, which is either an ironic holdover from the days when a meg of RAM was impressive or the ravings of an inexplicable Meg Ryan fan. The resemblance to 31337 is a mere coincidence.

horizontal rule
76

Wing Chun is awesome. I saw her in a panel discussion a while back and felt in the presence of blogebrity.

74 - I reread that at least 10 times before I saw my error - s/b "makes it hard for me to appreciate her". More coffee!

horizontal rule
77

That would be easily twice as plausible (but remember rules about multiplying by zero) if "e" was the third letter of the alphabet. Also.

horizontal rule
78

4r15t0tl3 s4yz th4t m1sl34d1ng n00bz ab0ut t3h n4tur3 of 1337 iZ as gh3y a5 teh F0rmz. wtf!!!1!!

horizontal rule
79

AT some point, SJP got all skinny and pointy-nosed (I don't know how starving yourself can change your nose structure, but for her it did - or the dumbest rhinoplasty ever). But she was cute - if not teh hott - before SATC.

Oh, and as someone who's been on both sides of the blue collar/student divide (although only one side of the racial divide), I think ogged was wrong - it's something one hard laborer will say to another, and I don't think it's out of bounds for a student to say it. Maybe if the other student is some ultra-prep walking stereotype, I guess....

horizontal rule
80

I don't think she got pointy-nosed as much as it was the different hair color and makeup.

horizontal rule
81

Hey speaking of rhinoplasty -- go visit this link. Scroll down about a third of the way to the paragraph that begins, "A series of internal injections to the septum". And read for a little while. I think you'll enjoy it.

horizontal rule
82

re sjp:

http://thighswideshut.org/2006/02/thighs-wide-content.html

this could explain it all.

horizontal rule
83

DEEDEEDEEDOODOODOOawwwwwwWEEawwwwwww, bitchez! is the new " 'sup? ".

horizontal rule
84

"Matthew Broderick had sex with Helen Hunt? I did not know that. "

They were flinging pre-SJP and MB. Sometimes I notice these things. I seem to recall that both women flang with JFK, Jr., too. They were also friends since Girls Just Want To Have Fun, though I have no clue about later years.

I doubt MB is gay; sometimes people just have mannerisms, you know; especially in the thee-ay-tah. I recall an interview with SJP, who tends to blurt, about how she really didn't care all that much for sex pre-MB, but MB was "wonderful!" It was on tv, and if it was acting, she certainly was doing a good job of blurting and looking embarassed immediately, which is obviously entirely possible, but not my first theory. Of course, as the Gore Vidal quote on the sidebar 'o me blog says, "sex is a continuum."

Alameida, if Helen Hunt ever makes a pass at you, you can pass her along to me. Tastes differ. Feel free to give my your list, so I'll know whom to pass along to you in turn, after I become a Hollywood Sex Symbol.

SJP was cuter in LA Story days. (A movie I recall with fondness, though haven't seen it in a bunch of years. Getcher own IMDB link.)

horizontal rule
85

SJP is extremely attractive, actually. So there.

horizontal rule
86

Stop trolling, B.

horizontal rule
87

Am torn between saying that not trolling would require me to change my entire approach to this blog, and whining about how you just can't handle having anyone disagree with you.

horizontal rule
88

That's because I'm always right.

horizontal rule
89

You and me both, baby.

horizontal rule
90

See? We agree! Time for the make-up sex.

horizontal rule
91

Exactly what I was thinking!

horizontal rule
92

I doubt MB is gay

A gay friend of mine claims to have slept with him. He play some other friends an answering machine message from MB, as proof. I did not hear it myself.

horizontal rule
93

play s/b played

horizontal rule
94

Well, to smack SJP's large face properly, Becks would need at least four slaps. A single slap would just get lost there.

horizontal rule
95

re 54: I doubt MB is gay; sometimes people just have mannerisms, you know; especially in the thee-ay-tah. it could be that until MB she never had a nice beard to allow her to play the proverbial "field" in whatever way turns out to float her proverbial "boat."

horizontal rule
96

95 wuz me. figures i'd manage to lose my name the first time i siccessfully used an html tag. now if only i could figure out how to do a strike-out, which evil blogger denies me.

horizontal rule
97

<strike> and </strike>

gets you

and

horizontal rule
98

But <persuasive> and <amusing> don't seem to work. Bad syntax?

horizontal rule
99

I've always found this handy and helpful, since I'm basically illiterate in HTML save for under ten tags or so.

Strike doesn't work in some places.

horizontal rule
100

Nice link, Gary. Relatedly, I just found this page with special characters (people have linked something similar before), though it doesn't seem to have the not-equals sign people were using. I often have trouble seeing the heart, but it's working now: ♥

The other suit symbols are broken though.

(Refraining from putting all the special characters into this comment.)

horizontal rule
101

Decacommentus nomoria!

horizontal rule
102

Centicommentus.

horizontal rule
103

≠ can be found in this list, which is ⊄ of the one linked in 102.

horizontal rule
104

I think we've covered the topic of HTML in &spades now.

horizontal rule
105

!= &ne &ne

horizontal rule
106

I don't actually know the difference, but != doesn't require any çpecial characters.

horizontal rule
