You know, I looked at flights and such and really did wonder if there was anyway I could justify being in NY this week. I m sad to say there was no way I could swing it. I m really sore I can't be there. But I swear. Oneday I ll be in the states when you have a meet. Then you ll be sorry.
If we wanted to be cruel, we could each write up what happened at the meetup in the format of the game Two Truths and a Lie and make the non-attendees try to sort it out.
I'm still not exactly sure how we'll know one another. I presume we'll get the booth-ish table in the back of the restaurant, but maybe not. Ben and I had lunch yesterday, so we can find one another, and I suppose others of you have met before... Well, I guess everyone should look for the group of people who are not British tourists or grad students or all wearing suits. I'm in a white button-down, jeans and boots, with big wavy blonde hair, very noticeable.
I've met Becks, Tia, and JackM, and I've seen a picture of Wolfson. With that, and your description, I'll be able to find people. Who else is showing up? I've lost track.
To clarify my 15: I will go into O'Reilly's at about 5:00 and order a beer. If you are there in between 5 and 5:30, please mosey over to the bar and say hello. I will be wearing a funny yellow-and-purple shirt. Plaid? I'm not sure if that is what you would call the pattern but it may be. Also: a leather jacket an John Lennon glasses.
Ha! For once Ben is on the receiving end of an indiscretion error. I'm counting on the same things as LB. If anyone can't find us, you can always shout "Who wants to sex Motumbo?" and we'll wave you over.
Sorry, TMK, but I won't be able to make it there early.
I'll be latish, (closer to 7 than to 6), but for anyone who's planning to show up and hasn't met anyone before, and needs more descriptions to work from, I've got long, straight brown hair, oval glasses, and I'm in a black blazer and a white button-down shirt.
I, of course, won't be there because New York is a very long way from here. If I were, though, I'd be the handsome redhead that Tia is smashing in the crotch with a hammer.
Oh, apo, I just talk big. I know I have duties to the Hero, and am more than willing to fulfill them. I'm wearing a short black flowery dress and a sweatshirt that says "Brilliant"
35: I'm pretty sure I proposed, in the comments leading up to the first New York meetup, that a lurker should do that in order to replicate the dynamic we have here.
Nobody else came early -- guess I frightened 'em off with my description of my shirt-of-2-colors. Ah well. A young lady who looked about like I was expecting A White Bear to look like (except minus the fur and not as tall) was seated near the front door and bid me hello when I came in; but when I asked if she wanted to sex Motumbo she reacted with confusion rather than recognition. So I guess she was not the one. Or she was messin with my mind -- AWB, was that you, messin with my mind?
47,45:Didn't read it that way at all; more like the commentariat are so good at this, that putting yourself in print is intimidating--meeting someone however awesome probably is not.
No, I'm saying that this forum is peculiarly intimidating. I imagine that people who comment here actually have very good "real life" social skills, which would make encountering them in person less intimidating than encountering them here.
I may very well be Louis Malle, or Wally or Andre. So, Joe, if you want to have a very intense dinner in which we discuss the meaning of life and my time in the Sahara and the forests of Poland, drop me a line.

Dude, you should so keep thinking that. It's absolutely true -- in real life we're all smooth, charming and socially adept.
I hope I can make it. I should be there around 9ish if I do.

People coming to town is always a good excuse for a meet, since so many of us are clustered in various places.

There is clearly a shortage over there -- I imagine she'll be taking them home, not bringing them hence.

I and presumably others of the Unfogged Lurketariat want to hear all about it. The bon mots, the smoking braks, who had teh hotts for whom, etc.

If you're NYC based, do remember that lurkers are invited.

Let's make it "Many Lies Plus More Lies!" Or we could do it in the style of Gawker's Conde Nast softball coverage.

If anyone can be there around 5, I could drop by for a quick beer. But gotta be on my train at 5:30.

You do know how to make an old man happy, Tia.
Posted by apostropher | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:21 PM
"an old man"? I thought you were calling it Spanky. Does it measure its age differently, like a dog?
Posted by Tia | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:24 PM
23 made me think of this. Now that some hott action.

Age and length.

It multiplies its length by 7, too? Tia, you ain't the only one who just talks big.

How do you get an apostropher to stop humping your leg?
Posted by The Modesto Kid | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:38 PM
You can't. My leg-humping technique is unstoppable.
Posted by apostropher | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:48 PM
I thought that was half the length + 7.
Posted by Mo MacArbie | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:50 PM
Is apo so heroic he can design a leg he cannot hump?
Posted by Tia | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 2:50 PM
Dammit, I'm a member of the lurketariat who desperately wants to go to one of these meetups, but every time, I've had other plans.
When the first one was announced, I and another lurker had the idea of showing up but sitting at an adjacent table and just eavesdropping.
Posted by Dagger Aleph | Link to this comment | 03-29-06 4:38 PM
35- I think that leaves the realm of "lurking" and heads towards "stalking"
