Re: Cory Booker Is Batman

1

That's what happens to people who run with scissors.

I don't really read comic books, but I think Cory Booker is Bishop.

horizontal rule
3

I don't really read comic books

You just read them for the articles.

horizontal rule
4

Actually, at least in the blogosphere, enough people that I respect have read and really liked comic books that I feel a little illiterate for not having read more.

Booker told The Star-Ledger of Newark he yelled "not in my city" at the scissors-wielding suspect.

Oh Lord. Now I wish he'd gotten a mild stab from those scissors. Nothing permanent, maybe a nice puncture to the leg.

"...but I think Cory Booker is Bishop."

That link goes to the frame. Possibly you wanted this. (Or you could go here or here; pictures here.)

I think Bishop is rather cranky in terms of what one wants for a Mayor; a bit more diplomacy tends to be in order. And I'm not sure that being from an apocalyptic alternative future where genocide of mutants took place gave him a helpful background for being an urban politician, though it does account for the crankiness. But maybe one wants a mayor who doesn't threaten to shoot people quite so much.

Although Arnold did get elected Gubinator, to be sure. But, then, that's worked out in rather mixed fashion, so far, at best.

3: "You just read them for the articles."

The articles in the back of (some of) Alan Moore's comics tend to be quite good, in fact.

horizontal rule
9

5: Yeah. Seriously coolness demerits for quoting yourself.

horizontal rule
10

Ahem. "Seriously" s/b "Serious."

horizontal rule
11

I talked with Jacob T. Levy the other night! About comic books, even.

horizontal rule
12

Alan Moore, fah! Real men read Sock Monkey.

4: Same here. My entire comic-book education consists of the semester between when I left MIT and went to the University of Chicago. I was still living in my MIT coop, and there was a big locker in the basement filled with a couple of years of X-Men, SpiderMan, and various other assorted comics. I read the locker-full over that semester, but that's it. (Sally is fascinated by WonderWoman at least, and I figure I'll keep feeding the fascination as long as she's interested, which means I can borrow the collections I get her. Which will be some form of remedial comics education.)

Cory Booker may be Batman, but he sure ain't Shazam.

horizontal rule
15

Exactly right.

horizontal rule
16

14: Captain Marvel wins, if for no other reason than the fact that his arch-nemesis is an evil telepathic caterpillar.

horizontal rule

I always want to read "Silvana" as "Sivana." She's probably not as evil, though.

And totally OT:

"Last year, the group independently released an eight-song, self-titled demo cassette wrapped in a condom, and Carroll has kept up a sort of homosexual version of Ice Cube's "The Nigga Ya Love to Hate" act throughout Faggot's two years. Part of that project involves stage antics: Carroll has put any number of things into his ass onstage, from guitars to a pair of tighty-whities wrapped in a condom."

I share because I love.

horizontal rule
18

Everything is going according to plan.

horizontal rule
19

Wow! A whole guitar?

horizontal rule
20

Why do all these homosexual guitars keep pushing themselves up my ass?

horizontal rule
21

homosexual guitars

Gaytars. Labs prefers the base gaytars.

horizontal rule
22

A whole guitar?

But only half a piano.

horizontal rule
23

A whole guitar?

In the guitarhole.

But only half a piano.

In other words, mezzo piano.

horizontal rule
24

12 is bad and sexist. Real women love Sock Monkey too.

horizontal rule
25

24: I didn't exclude real women from the set of Sock Monkey lovers, B.

horizontal rule
26

12: as if you know anything about comics. Or drawing.

13: "Sally is fascinated by WonderWoman at least, and I figure I'll keep feeding the fascination as long as she's interested, which means I can borrow the collections I get her. Which will be some form of remedial comics education."

Sort of; kinda limited. Wonder Woman has often tended to be one of the least-connected books to the larger DC Universe, particularly given that she's commonly regarded as one of their Big Three Characters; but they've generally had a lot of history of having trouble making her work. In her own book, anyway, as opposed to, say, Justice League incarnations.

Though she did recently kill Maxwell Lord by snapping his neck in cold blood, and thus resulting in a lot of blowback, admidst the ongoing onslaught of Real Moral Issues and whatnot in the current DC Universe (which I only know about via reading on the internets, rather than seeing the actual comics).

And, of course, as suggested by Mr. Jones, there's a lot more to comics than DC/Marvel, which plenty of comics fans will sneer to their utmost at. But I'm not the right person to be your guide.

Hmm, I don't know how decent or awful Birds of Prey was; might be too adult for Sally, anyway; how old is she, again? (Young, I know.)

According to the article, the mayor's security detail tackled the robber. Not sure how heroic it is make a show of running after the bad guy when you know your beefy bodyguards are right there with you to step in and do the rough stuff.

"beefy bodyguards" s/b "plucky helpmeet"
