Is it really sensible to compare a subscription-only show like The Wire to public broadcasts like The Path of 9/11 or Sunday NFL? After all, the point is to say that ABC and NBC are raking in beaucoup ad dollars compared to HBO, but that's stupid.
Is it really sensible to compare a subscription-only show like The Wire to public broadcasts like The Path of 9/11 or Sunday NFL?
No, it is not. In real life I have never heard anyone talk about watching any show that airs on a subscription-only channel. (Except the Sopranos) Those things are expensive!
Also, that "backlash" article is weaker than a kitten. The point of the article is basically "Everyone loves The Wire, but LOLOL it's just a TV show guys! It doesn't cure cancer or give you blowjobs! Why has there not been a backlash article yet? I will write one LOL, even though I have never seen the show."
Man, I just wish people would resist the urge to compare their favourite film / HBO drama / episode of Pokemon to "Homeric epic." Spending more than ten minutes on character development does not make a show the second coming of the fucking Iliad, for crying out loud.
Wait... that's guy's a TV critic and he's seen less of The Wire than my non-HBO-havin' ass has? That's like somebody becoming President who... I'll stop there.
I was honestly expecting Bush to devote a few minutes in yesterday's speech to explaining what "dhimmi" means, and maybe even start using the term "dhimmocrats".
I don't have cable, and thanks to DVDs, I won't need it!
Does the Wire work watched all at once or over a short time frame? Some shows do (24, Prison Break, Lost), and others don't. Smallville, in particular, where you seem to need the TV-schedule enforced week to forget that the plot is pretty much the same: 'meteor rock' causes a mutation and robs Clark of his powers at the crucial moment! and someone will make a clever foreshadowing comment:
Lex: "Come on, Clark. I'm not a criminal mastermind."
Theses? Christ, that makes so much more sense. I've been trying to do the whole Luther thing recently and, let me tell you, nailing feces to anything is impossible.
I'm not quite through the first season of The Wire, and I'd have to say that it's certainly among the best TV dramas I've ever seen. I at the moment can't get the theme song out of my head, which is more worrisome than it might presently seem.
I'm not sure that the actor who plays Avon Barksdale is doing that good of a job. I'm also a bit puzzled at the progression of the Polish P guy, who went from drunken lout to meek cryptographer a bit too quickly.
I appreciate the support, Hero. My only quibble with the cartoon is that the women's lines are usually used to end a relationship, not turn down a suitor. But whatever, everyone knows that women are big-assed gold diggers; especially in rap videos.

This is an interesting question. I decided that Wood Harris is doing a good job because Avon's persona itself requires a bit of theatricality, so the slightly overdone boss-ness fits.
the Polish P guy, who went from drunken lout to meek cryptographer a bit too quickly
True. Retrospectively, it was the scene where he hit the kid that was off and out of character.

ogged drinks. I remember having similar suspicions, but Harris is quite good as Avon; that becomes more apparent as time goes on.
I like Unf's posts best.

This website should be renamed "Oggedunf". Three syllables, of course.

Yet another reason to prefer the melanoma-preventing Deadwood.

So typical of The Left.

The Left loves its Skinemax to the exclusion of all other channels. Even the Dhimmitude Today! Channel.

It works best that way, since there's a lot to keep track of.

Over a short time frame per season works.

Have to wonder if there's any material substance left of the old ogged. You're probably mostly meat now.

I'm unsure how to rank that one against Hertzfeldt's other masterwork. It's a close call.

Or am I reading too much into it?

Take it here.
Also, advanced humor scientists have discovered that, as punchlines go, "Bitches love money" isn't a good one.

Is this moment for the return of Unf? Are these the end times?
Unf comments here to page ogged. Now Unf comments at MY's new place about The Wire. And Unf comments on Crooked Timber about highway names.
Will Unf return to posting on this blog? (I think the odds are better than Fafblog's returning.) Stay tuned for more episodes ...
