Doesn't it seem a little odd, in retrospect, that Google did a Superbowl ad shortly before releasing a new and highly controversial product but didn't mention that product in the ad?
I miss the good old days when it was the Electronic French Foundation.
The material for an effective ad to that effect was there, but I doubt it actually worked that way on anyone, what with the message not being mentioned and all. Only to someone already given to think about google's data-mongering would the lesson be apparent.
2, That was 20+ years ago, when the inter-tubes were tubes.

Since this is a quiet thread, I got trivial news.
My bios was screaming at me to replace my system drive. Bad Bad Bad. Since it was an old 80G IDE ATA, and all my components were 8 years old, I had to buy a new computer...my way. Old & cheap at Frys.
Gigabyte Mobo onboard video and audio
Athlon II dualcore 3 Gz dual Mb cache
2G DD2 800 shared memory
SATA 320
$250...1 hours build 1 hour install some OS & software
Now I'm watching the processors barely register with my CPU usage split in half and I don't know WTF I am seeing. Is one core dedicated to video and one to audio? This is weirding me out. Should I try to find some threading OS or software. 64 bit?
And get offa my lawn

Athlon II is 64 bit chip... are you trying to run a 32 bit OS?
So, I have to ask, does Steve Jackson actually read unfogged?
I do assume, of course, that were that the "real" Steve Jackson he would have included a URL, but it was still striking.
It is sobering to realize that there is probably no truer map of my interests and my psyche than my Google search history (not that all of it exists in a form linked to me).
Most versions of XP are 32 bit, although they did also issue it in 64 bit.
If you are going for "cheap" you might consider getting hold of the 64 bit version of the latest Ubuntu release.
On of the fun premises of the show *Caprica* is that you can reconstruct an AI software duplicate of a person using only the traces they leave on the internet--searches, credit card purchases, medical records, etc. It is weirdly believable.
12:Agreed.

I'm thinkin firefox, downloaded again yesterday, is the source of the malware problem I had last week.

The stipulation I would put on the Caprica thesis is that you would need a nearly infinite database for comparative purposes (like the Amazon or Netflix recommendations), in order to accurately determine an individual profile.
And remember, the Caprica character also used her & her associates emails and other written personal records.
So does this mean that if I want my data anonymized I have to use Microsoft's bing/ yahoo? Are excite and alta vista still around?
Just don't log in with a google account, BG. I don't use one.
