These are so versatile! ROASTED SWEET POTATO can serve as COMET, GNOME HAT or DISEMBODIED TOE.
How do those not count as some kind of double-banned emoticon?

Oops. My high horse, let me fall from it.
All of these are classified, as far as bidirectionality goes, as "other neutrals", which leads inexorably to the supposition that bidirectionality refers to character alignment.
I mean, in a D&D sort of way.
I just want to know how to write a barred L.
And Q to the W. That's a neat looking letter.
Or something more horizontal, as is featured in the LATIN SMALL LETTER L WITH BAR?
But nooooo, we can't put Tengwar or Klingon in Unicode; that would be silly.

All single codes, the nether regions are a lot more populated than I recall.

...laydeez.

Mustache!
ோ is a single character because it's a single vowel that wraps around its consonant (which shows up where the dotted circle is).
௲ is just over-ornate.
What happened to the Unicode Snowman of yesteryear?
No, really, it looks all fucked up now. Font changes? Firefox being screwy?
(Just checked. Looks fine in Chrome.)
There's enough material here to make Japanese tentacle porn entirely in rebus form. Just sayin'.
This looks like the one Charley's looking for.
8 Switch your computer to a Polish keyboard. Talking about keyboard layouts, Swiss French and plain old French ones are different. Most annoying typo generator ever.
Thanks, guys. My dog's name in Kinła. Let's see if I can get one of those machines that laser-engrave tags to write it right.
Any ideas what gcc is looking for when it fails to find "png.h" and pukes when I try to python easy_install matplotlib? Obviously, it's not finding a header file called png.h, but does anyone know what provides that header?
On my system there are multiple files called "png.h":
(a) /usr/include/libpng12/png.h
(b) /usr/include/xulrunner-1.9.2/png.h
(c) /usr/include/png.h [symlink to (a)]
(d) /usr/lib/plt/collects/plot/src/all/png.h
Presumably you want the file (and associated files) furnished by libpng.
PERSON BOWING DEEPLY looks to me to be bawling.
I love this. PERSON RAISING BOTH HANDS IN CELEBRATION.
@28: I installed the libpng-devel packages and that did it.
Even if you don't use Linux, packages.debian.org or packages.ubuntu.com is a good way to figure out what you need to install to get a libfoo or bar.h.
I've been meaning to ask oudemia how she gets such nice looking Greek in her comments. I don't really have any need for properly formatted Greek anymore, but years and years ago I was trying to type Greek in MS word and never found a good solution.
to get a libfoo or bar.h.
And again, I'm convinced you people are just making this stuff up.
27 is clearly ALIEN THROWING GANG SIGN.
36: But of course it is all "made up".

Heehee. So: having stayed away from the M-P-Institut for the last 3 months or so out of shame, I decide to attend a lecture today at the German-American Institute about the role of universities in society ... and who should be sitting two rows in front of me but the director of said MPI, the one who invited me to HDberg in the first place. (And it's not like he didn't see me, since I, being that kind of gunner dork intellectually-engaged citizen, had to stand up and ask a question.)
How very Alanis Morissette.
(But, uh, other HD-lurker, I'd still appreciate you emailing me about picking up my stuff from the locker...)
|>
Aw c'mon, Alanis Morissette would walk right in there, get the stuff out of the locker and write a song about it liveblog it.
(And yes, I recognize that the very idea that advisors &c. are paying any attention to my shortcomings, let alone fuming righteously over them such that hiding in shame would appropriate, is only a figment of my overwrought imagination. Nevertheless, it was like rain on your wedding day.)
Why didn't you just ask the MPI guy if he could retrieve your stuff? It's not as though it's out of his way. You disappoint me, trapnel.

I totes would have, but seeing that locker key every time I rooted around in my backpack for something started really getting to me, so I took it out about two months ago--and hence didn't have it on me today.
Kidding aside, where I really let The Mineshaft down today was an entirely different breaching-experiment opportunity: after the lecture, I heard the speaker asking his hosts whether they could make a detour before dinner for him to have a single malt--but the crowd of old fogeys, whoever they were, pleaded ignorance of any suitable venue. Clearly I ought to have taken charge right there: "I know just the place. Let us sip Scotch, and while we breathe in the peaty fumes of the Alte-, we can discuss your 'Neue Aufklärung.'

30: "Person raising both hands in celebration" is obviously a euphemism for "Titties! Hooray!"
I want to know the answer to oud's question in 46.
48: HBGB showed up last night complaining about grading. So I am thinking "No" unless she was correcting in between contractions.
