Re: Knowledge is dangerous

Accepting the default answers when installing software is the reason the Yahoo toolbar is friggin' everywhere.

The post title follows from a simple syllogism: knowledge is power, and power is dangerous (just look at what's happening in Japan!).

Has anyone else encountered "issues" with OpenSUSE 11.4? Like three successive downloads from two different mirrors all failing the checksum?

I have used speedfan on the last few motherboards. Never have liked what came with them. I played with everything on the last one, but I made a mistake in a hurry and this AMD is locked. Cheap though.

I rarely go over 20% on CPU anyway, even when compressing, converting, or watching video. I just needed a new mobo to use big hd's,

Over-Overclocking video can get pretty.

Wow. I would have thought that McManus would be the voice of radicalism here. Wow.

Ok, at the moment, betrunken, I'm having negotiations with the Mädchen from ... awhile ago. Yeah. Complicated emotional negotiations.

But. Yes. I do think that babys should come with the OP stapled to them, to ponder at length throughout their lives.

[Also: funny, because as a 1st-year at Chicago I resold overlocked CPUs (his last job: a semiprofil bodybuilder) with my roommate on ebay, but now I'm all, 'how can I underclock this to be quieter and less power-draining?'

The obvious thing would be to say, 'ah, that's growing up', except for a cursory look over What's What would recoil in horror from that labeling.

Again, currently negotiating with die Mädchen about future, uns, leben.]

So no one thinks the suggestion that if you know what you're doing it's not safe to do with the default answers is amusing, huh?

Oh, oops. Yeah, that's actually kind of funny. If only anyone but TOTAL DORKS read those messages.

If you know what you're doing, you might do something nobody has predicted, so, you know, just be aware of that.

The canonical 'Snow Crash' forehead-"Bad Impulse Control" tattoo has always appealed to me. But, uh, that's one of those impulses that should be resisted.

15: I am a goddamn genius, I figured this out using Google Translate and no knowledge of German -- well I got as far as Schlampestempel (tr of "slut stamp") and Google suggested 'Do you mean Schlampenstempel?' And that is a genius idea for a tattoo. In what font, do you think?

I dated a girl in Germany whose mother was serving time in prison. Her mother shared with her some wisdom regarding tattoos: "Not every woman who gets a tattoo goes to prison, but every woman who goes to prison gets a tattoo."

(BTW that same ex-GF is now a judge. Would that our country had more judges with personal experience on the other side of the criminal justice system.)

(Oh, and one other thing. We once spent the weekend in the mother's apartment, where she had left some cucumbers in the refrigerator before going to serve her sentence. Ghastly! Folks, if you're going to serve a spell behind bars, clean the perishables out of your fridge first. That's what I learned.)

This deserves further analysis. What they have is

"It is generally safe and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions, unless you know what you're doing."

aka

"(for all answers x (Dx --> Sx)) or K"

where

"Sx" means "x is safe for you to accept"
"Dx" means "x is a default answer"
"K" means "You know what you're doing".

Whereas what they should have is

"It is generally not safe and recommended to accept a non-default answer to a question, unless you know what you're doing."

aka

"(for all answers x (not Dx --> not Sx)) or K"

In other words

Knowledge Denying the antecedent is dangerous.

In late 1967, Stanley's Orinda lab was raided by police; he was found in possession of 350,000 doses of LSD and 1,500 doses of STP. His defense was that the illegal substances were for personal use

Even scared of pot anymore, but I wish I had couple hundred mikes. Dark Star tonight.

I have a close relative who got popped with a pound and a half of marijuana in Alabama in the 60s, and somehow managed to get it pleaded down to simple possession using the I-roll-big-joints defense.
