Re: Colbert Super PAC

I'm commenting on this because I've never seen crickets chirp this long on an unfogged post, and it's freaking me out.

This is really off topic, but watching my five-year-old try to sing the White Stripes is six kinds of funny:

Five Nation Army, Bum da-dum-bum da dum-bum.
Mom, where are they going again.
Four Nation Army, Bum da-dum-bum da dum-bum.
Mom, how many where there again.
Seven Nation Army, Bum da-dum-bum da dum bum.

There won't be any money. The show can't donate, and why would anyone else? Maybe Colbert will throw some of his own money in but it won' be enough to do more than put a few videos on YouTube.

Whatever money he does spend, though, will have a huge multiplier effect due to the massive coverage it will get in various media. How much money did the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have to spend vs. how many times did their commercials get free airplay on places like CNN as part of various "news" stories?

I don't think you realize the kinds of legions Colbert can muster. He's done stuff to harness his viewers before, like get his name elected to some space thing, and swamp Wikipedia, and I forget what else. It's an ongoing joke that he's got sheer numbers that he can harness for giant practical jokes, and they would certainly kick in $5 to be a part of this. I bet he's raised a lot.

9: The legions who enter online polls, change wikipedia etc. on Colbert's suggestion are mostly college kids who have lots of internet access but not much money. None of the previous stunts required money. Also, the mimimum "check box" donation is $25, and the form you have to fill out to donate on colbertsuperpac.com is kind of intimidating, requiring name, address, and employer.

On the other hand, from the FEC letter it looks like the TV show is going to pay for production of commercials (and report the costs as in-kind contributions), so they will be made and aired, at least on Colbert's show.
