Let me be the first to suggest meeting at the Smithsonian by the Muppets.
I know Friday is short notice, if not quite as short as last time. If that doesn't work for people, how about early next week?
Richmond is an excellent spot for a DC meetup.
so are you all coming to my NYC meetup or what?
Durham is an excellent spot for a Richmond meetup.
5: Yeah, will. Come to Durham. I'll be there this weekend. (Also, some stranger at a cookout told me that Durham is very sketchy and to be careful.)
After this wretched heat ends, I'd like to suggest a Boston meetup. Or if anyone is near Buzzard's Bay/On the Cape, that would work too.
7: Chapel Hill is nicer and Carrboro is hiper.
Durham's not sketchy or dangerous. It just has more minorities than whites which makes some people uncomfortable.
10: I suspected that was what the interlocutor meant but decided to talk instead about cuisine not to press for details.
The whole region has enough pollen to clog every sinus in North America.
It's really, really hot in the DC/Balto area, today and tomorrow as well -- like 100+ (with the heat index, in the vicinity of 110 F), so meeting up a bit later than tomorrow, when it might hopefully have eased off a bit, might be good.
As delightful as it is to read about locations for other proposed meetups, is anyone actually contemplating joining this one?
What parsimon said. (That, and the Family Jacobian already have dinner plans for tomorrow and would hate to miss out on meetuptasticness.)
Though I'm only an hour or so from DC, I wouldn't be -- lest my 13 have seemed so. Things are ridiculously busy at work.
How about Tuesday or Wednesday next week?
I think we could make a Mon/Tue/Wed meetup.
Hey, will, I'll be in Richmond at the end of September!
Early next week works for me too. I don't have any real preference as to which day- does anyone else?
I'd be happy to show up and lurk early next week.
16: In that case, thanks for your concern for our adult decision-making capabilities.
Hey! I just thought you might not know -- if you're not in town yet -- how hot it is. That's all.
YK, you do know about the rule that lurkers have to take off their pants in the bar, right?
Excellent, Thorn. Let me know the details. We might be able to get Stanley here then too.
Also, a meet-up with Kraab is well worth it.
28.2: Aw, shucks. Back at ya, will.
Tuesday and Wednesday are now out for me. (My company is much in demand, you know.) So can we schedule for Monday? I could meet on Thursday, but Monday would be much better.
Okay! Monday. Where's easy for you to get to?
Red or green line between about Gallery Place and Columbia Heights.
YK and the Jacobians should also weigh in with any preferences.
I have a preference for keeping my pants on at the bar.
Looks like TJ will probably be stuck late at work, but the kids & I can meet up. (Provided said meetup is occurring at a kid-tolerant location.)

I just returned from an informal bar gathering preceding my 25th high school reunion (that I won't be attending) tomorrow night. It was pretty amazing the breadth of range from "wow, you look exactly the same" to "holy fuck, that must be 25 years of hard, hard living under your belt".
|>
I had the same reaction at my 20th. Changes ranging from "Are those different glasses from the ones you had in the 80s?" to "Who are you?"
36.last: "Who are you?"
"Time to go home, honey."
35: Depending on whether they got a look at your face or your ass, the reaction will vary.
kind of annoyed that I didn't go to my 20th even though I was randomly in DC. not sure what I was thinking there. I am curious to see people (though there's Facebook in this ever changing world in which we live in.)
34: I was going to suggest Saint-Ex because U Street-ish would be convenient for me. It seems like it would be quiet enough on a Monday night to be an OK kid location. Thoughts? Other suggestions?
I guess only an asshole would suggest one of the H Street bars*. Or quote this sentence from the article: It happened on U Street, it happened on 14th Street and it's happening on H Street."
*Will no one think of the children Unfogged social science research project?
Apparently they're closing the kitchen for renovations, but will still be serving some food.
Is Monday night still good? I can make it at 7:30 or later, but would defer to other people's schedules.
Yes, Monday.
I'll be there about 7. I look like this, with fewer pearls.
I'll be there as soon as I can, which hopefully will be 7 as well.
Saint-Ex is fine with me, or another nearby-ish option is Busboys & Poets, which might be more child-friendly? Or it might be more busy. I never go anywhere these days, I don't know what things are like, really.
Either one is fine with me. I'll see if I can possibly get there before 7:30.
So that nobody can see you taking your pants off?
Who all's coming this time? Are we settled on St Ex at 7? Can one of the bosses move this up the page and add details?
Saint-Ex at 7 it is.
I think we're expecting Messily, Kraab, YK, Mme. Jacobian & offspring, another lurker, and possibly Becks.
I'm wearing a red & white dress. If you don't see us upstairs, check the tables downstairs where there may be more room.
YK, don't stress yourself out about the time. Get there when you can get there.
No knife fight, no glory, you villagers.
Can one of the bosses move this up the page and add details?
I ain't the boss of you now, but sure.
We should arrive around 7. I'll be the one with two toddlers in tow.
Saint-Ex is closed! I am sweating on a planter in front. New plan?
also my phone may or may not be close to dying...
Suggesting busboys and poets, just up 14th. Waiting at st. Ex for now. Thoughts?
Saint-Ex is closed
Disappeared without a trace even.
We are at tables in the back of Busboy's & Poets. Come find us!
Bizarrely, Von Wafer, Teo, and Parenthetical and her car are at Saint-Ex right now. It's the meetup vortex.
Yowzer. Post updated for Busboys & Poets.
Fucking Obama doesn't want to retire to an underwater Dubai city, he wants to be a Sunday show pundit.
This is the DC meetup I'm watching on TV, right?
I want Boehner to take his pants off. I want to see where the orange stops.
65: Wow, the tie complements the skin very nicely.
Well, he's safe from my strangling him -- cuz I don't want that orange on me.
Fuck, fuck, fuck that shit.
I got an e-mail from moveon saying that we need to support my rep Markey in fighting for social security and medicare, so I guess that he must be on the right side of social security. I'm less clear on whether he's sound on Medicare.
I have an idea for a new business: Transcripts of talk radio for liberals.
I figure there should be a nationwide market of at least 300, 350 people who want to know what the crazy people on the radio are screaming about, but can't stand to listen to it for more than twelve seconds without wanting to throw things.
Or maybe it's just me.
(If only the Phils had been on, I wouldn't have had to hear twelve seconds in the first place.)
Also, the talking heads on CNN said that Obama was trying to appeal to his base. Really, not the mushy middle?
And who did Boehner think he was reaching out to?
Also, the talking heads on CNN said that Obama was trying to appeal to his base. Really, not the mushy middle?
I suspect he thinks the mushy middle is his base.
One thing about getting all of my news from print or online is that I went a very long time* with my own personal, idiosyncratic pronunciation of Boehner's name. I like mine better.
*Until tonight.
I'm pretty sure that the Book of Revelations says somewhere that a giant orange penis will lead the many nations unto ruin.
Somewhere in his ancestry it was probably spelled "Böhner" or something like that, as in " Böhner schnitzel".
Richmond is an excellent spot for a DC meetup.
Patience, Grasshopper. I will be there even sooner than Thorn.
In the land of the Oompa-Loompas the large crying man will be king.
73-77: I still pronounce it "boner". I mean, "bayner"? I call bullshit. What other words in the English language pronounce "oeh" like a long a sound? If not English, in what language is that normal? (Seriously, does anyone know? Googling "boehner etymology" was surprisingly uninformative, but I did find this, which is inconclusive but says that "boner" is a plausible possibility.)

Okay, I'm listening to a required "Violence in the Workplace Prevention" program, that introduces itself by listing incidents of violence in the workplace of NYS offices. It just listed 9/11 as an example. I mean, I suppose it was violence that impacted state offices, but it really doesn't seem relevant.
|>
81: I wonder if they list Pearl Harbor if you work for the state of Hawaii.
What with professional soldiers, most violence takes place in somebody's workplace.
Criminals, too. For a mugger, every parking lot is a potential workplace.
If you want to see the NYTimes deliver up a double-decker shit sandwich read this news "analysis" by Jackie Calmes ("A 'Unique Opportunity' on the Debt Ceiling, Lost") and this column by racist fuckpig, David Brooks ("Congress In the Lead"). Not as memorable since they don't quote all the Viilagers, but as emblematic of our time as the Sally Quinn "he trashed the place and it wasn't his to trash" political Rosetta Stone article was of the late '90s.
What other words in the English language pronounce "oeh" like a long a sound?
What other words in the English language contain the letter sequence "oeh" at all? (Seriously, I just did a wildcard search in OED and found nothing that wasn't a name or crossing morpheme boundaries.)
Long a is a reasonable, if not good, Anglicization of German รถ.
Wait, Bonsaisue brought toddlers? Good thing a certain commenter of yore wasn't attending.
There was nary a beketchupping. Those kids are the best!
88: Stop trying to look so husbandable, E-Mess.
