my grandmother's "multiply time estimates by 3" rule still applies.

Could you let us in on grandpa's secret?

And here you thought "Don't worry, this will only take about five minutes" wasn't good foreplay.

marmoleum

Okay, I'll bite. Is this tile made with marmots, with marmosets, or with marmalade?

It's not dead. It's just taking longer than estimated for the next comment to show up.

It may not be dead, but it's interred in a marmoleum.

I always got confused by people being described as behaving with "marmoreal calm" because I thought it had something to do with marmots, but the context didn't seem to fit, marmots not being known for their unruffledness.

There is also a character in Crime and Punishment called Marmeladoff, who is apparently completely unconnected to marble, mausolea, marmots, marmosets, marmoleum or indeed marmelade.

In short, I find words confusing.

I would expect this to imply that the person had an ancestor who was a Portuguese quince (marmelo) farmer. This is also the derivation of marmalade; making it with oranges came later.

Marmoleum = Brand name of linoleum, which is made of modified linseed oil reinforced with jute fibers.

As it turns out, I'm not in Texas, because there are too many incomplete things to justify a trip. I'll be there in 3 weeks.

I commissioned one of my most extremely nutty students to make us a light. It was a wild gamble. He's always sending me pictures of crazy things he's made, but he is also a completely insane conspiracy-minded gun nut.

Until 15 minutes ago, it was mysterious as to whether or not he'd even begun the thing. But he just showed up, and it is gorgeous, and I'm completely amazed. Hooray for student.

That's a very nice thing to have done for that student. It's fortunate that it turned out, as it's a little hard to bring out the light fixture should he come over.

Fortuitous outcome. Had he mistaken your instructions to mean that you wanted him to create a fixture appropriate only in the bathroom, then you might have ended up with an "in-can decent".
