Silly Stanley! There's no Cereal Bowl in California!
Going to Taix at 6pm will make it pretty difficult to get up to Muddy Waters in Santa Barbara in time to see Califone, Stanley.
Perhaps the couch-throwing sorts could come down for the SF meetup.
I was confused. I had thought the couch-throwing was a reference to Megan, but then, she's not in Davis, is she? So it was a reference to von Wafer? We need that spreadsheet.
Davis and Sacramento are not so far apart.
But the Capitol Corridor never lets me bring couches afire on the train. They're stodgy.
Our story so far: Stanley will be at Bar None in SF on Wednesday night with Thundersnow and some non-Mineshaft folks, which we could combine this with. We were talking about a separate thing on Thursday or Friday - maybe at the Trappist in Oakland - but both of those days are bad for at least two people in the prior committees of correspondence (especially Friday is bad for Stanley).
So at this point I think we're left with a rather diminished group on Thursday, joining the crowd in SF on Wednesday. Thoughts?
Or, Stanley, when do your Wednesday festivities start? Maybe you could start at Bar None and switch off to a meetup-only thing elsewhere in the same general area. I'm motivated here by being put off by the reputed noise level of Bar None.
Wow there is some serious state nickname inequality.
There are some states, including the one in which I live, which need to seriously step up their nickname game.
Yeah, Bar None seems suspiciously bro-tastic. (One of the Yelp reviews mentions beer pong.) I'm curious as to how Stanley ended up committed to going there.
At the OCD clinic, they have a gym with many faucets.
She's near Davis.
Sacramento is the core cultural and economic center of the Sacramento metropolitan area which includes seven counties; with an estimated population of 2,527,123. ...
And it has 7x Davis' population! And it's the state capitol! All of which is just to say, it seems a bit odd to just leave it as merely implicitly referenced by "Davis."
Sacramento makes everybody from outside California think of The Big Valley or really bad government.
But I think Stanley's visit is only to Davis, and not the additional fifteen miles east that he would need to travel to see our dazzling regional hub.
The thing is, Sacramento really is just a bedroom community of our little town.
Anyway, I can't make it Thursday or Friday. But I'll be happy to come down Wednesday, if that's the plan. I'll even bring Megan, if she wants to join me. That said, my beer pong skillz are nowhere near as finely honed as I wish they were.
It makes everyone from inside California think of sleepy nothing, Joan Didion, or meth.
It makes the locals think of trees, bikes and bungalows.
Are you stodgy, Ari, or can the couches come too?
"Sacramento" makes me think of Korean food.
19: we'll light our way with the fires of burning couches, Megan.
21: do tell. Anywhere in particular? Or because Sacramento rhymes with bibimbap?
That's not very particular, Megan. I want neb to name names!
Folsom makes me think of Korean food because I think Johnny Cash looked like somebody who might have really like Korean food if he had ever tried it.
Although the more natural interpretation is as a standard call-and-response, I've always interpreted the "Pasadena, where you at?" and "Sacramento, Sacramento, where you at?" lines in California Love as reflecting a failure by Pasadena & Sacramento to show up for the party.
But I'll be happy to come down Wednesday, if that's the plan.
LIES!
I want neb to name names!
The only name I can name in connection with Sacramento Korean food is "Vicky" but I doubt that helps.
27: I always thought he was beseeching Pasadena and Sacramento natives to reveal themselves in crowd, perhaps by raising the roof.
Or, Stanley, when do your Wednesday festivities start? Maybe you could start at Bar None and switch off to a meetup-only thing elsewhere in the same general area.
Around 8-ish? I'd definitely be down to go somewhere else nearby. (I take no responsibility for the Bar None location and instead gesture vaguely at some unidentified third party.)
But I think Stanley's visit is only to Davis, and not the additional fifteen miles east that he would need to travel to see our dazzling regional hub.
This is correct, even though I really would love to visit this M-fun place.
Sacramento makes me think of my erstwhile cob-logger, Froz Gobo.
32: yeah, that's what I meant to convey under my "more natural interpretation." At any rate, the song predates your arrival; these days, surely, there would be no question of Sacramento representing, raising roofs, and/or burning coaches.
Is 8-ish when you and yours gather, or a good transfer point?
36: Ballpark, but that's when we're aiming to gather.
Sacramento makes me think of Mentos. In a sack.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!! Get it?! Like a sack o' Mentos!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!
Come on, that's funny. I don't care who you are. GIT R DONE!
HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
Sadly, this pub quiz also starts at 8--but it is very close to the other venue!
Oh hey, I just realized I can't do Thursday, so Wednesday's looking better and better.
What constitutes "nearby" to Bar None? I have a strong desire to avoid anything having to do with Union Street. (Actually, now that I think of it, Buck Tavern -- which Minivet has been to -- would be an excellent location; it's close to BART, maybe 10 minutes by cab from Bar None, and has both space and relative quiet.)
Yeah, Buck Tavern's a nice place. What say we go there at 8 and Stanley joins us when he can? Possibly VW too around 9, as I understand. (Yes, Josh, I know.)
I might be able to come on Wednesday. Are we SURE we can't do the East Bay?
Jackmormon, don't you want to come down to Santa Barbara?
I feel bad missing a meetup at Taix since It's two blocks from where I live, but I'm going to be accross the street getting my eardrums shredded at this show on Saturday. Don't want to miss Eyehategod, but maybe if the pit wears me out early I'll stop by.
45: Are you asking out due to transportation concerns or general preference for the Beast?
Are we SURE we can't do the East Bay?
Seconded. And really, I suppose this means that The Beast is indeed on Market Street? Or do I have so little credibility that nobody is even going to answers.
Also, Jackmormon lives on the West Coast? That seems...wrong.
I ought be able to come to this.
I've been pulling for the East Bay at every step, JM, but unless Stanley can beg off Bar None it's hard. Granted, if Stanley could come here Thursday (regarding which I'm not sure), we could do it then at the cost of Von Wafer's presence.
Or we could do both, maybe?
There exists an alternate universe where Rip Torn is Buck Tavern.
I'll be in the Bay Area to visit my folks from that Tuesday until the following Tuesday. But I'll be in the East Bay with somewhat limited transportation--ie, I could get out to SF (rides appreciated!) but it would be less ideal than, say, a Berkeley meetup! (Also, I would like a pony.) I'd be happy to meet wherever, however.
56: I can guarantee a ride back from SF, if that helps.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'm not sure what you think you saw, but whatever it was, you didn't see it. Or anything else for that matter. Are we clear?
I saw something nasty in the woodshed!
Josh, that would be great. You have my info, I think, via Google+.
I've been to Davis several times, but have never yet found a reason to go to Sacramento except for its airport, on the way to or from Davis. So somehow the metonymy (synecdoche? I never remember) seemed natural to me.
If y'all end up doing something on Thursday or Friday, let me know, as I might be able to come. I've got a prior engagement on Wednesday.
have never yet found a reason to go to Sacramento
Hello. I can read, you know.
I think at this point we've satisficed - Buck Tavern, Wednesday, August 17th, from 8PM to whenever.
You think essear needs someone to read to him?
Loudly, though.
Wednesday sounds good to me. See y'all then.
I don't think Stanley would mind me mentioning that there are loose plans for a Friday get-together in Santa Rosa for those who can't make Wednesday. Speak up if you're interested and we can formalize.
Oops. We forgot to liveblog it. There was fun and children and pizza and cocktails. Thanks, k-sky for hosting.
This would never have happened back in the Golden Age, when men were men and Ogged trolled his own blog.
I'm in Burlingame right now having eaten Mom's delicious cooking, and I might be able to come up to SF on the 17th! This looks fun.
What would never have happened?
Stanley is a gentleman and is impervious to cold. And the Halfordspawn is outrageously charming.
Is this happening? Is anyone coming?
What, the thing in San Francisco tomorrow? I mean to come. Through protest and cellular disruption! Au barricades, comrades!
