Crawling child and uncovered outlets!
Oh, and the rest looks nice too.
That's wonderful. I absolutely love the guy wires going from the first level sun shade to the eaves.
So cool. I love seeing the tiles. They work!
I have to admit that I had a total blast picking out tiles, carpet, wallpaper, paint colors, etc. I just loved it.
So where is the fancy new tied-string light fixture? In the older section?
Yay to JRoth, and his great clients. Yay AB. And yay to the general contractor too. I can see why he was proud of it. All of y'all should be proud.
I'm slightly phobic about the pseudonymity breach of posting it. I can't put my finger on a pathway by which it would happen, but I would not want that student finding this site. Despite the fact that he saw the addition, so it would already be a security breach if he saw this post or many, many others, and despite the fact that it's not like he's the only person who I wouldn't want stumbling on this site.
Anyway, so I was going to put a photo of the light up on the Flickr group.
By the way, this absolutely mystifies me: The shaded area on the left is new, the white on the left is the old house.
Wait, what?
The ceiling height is crazy. Without home furnishings in it, it doesn't look like a private residence at all. (In a cool, good way.) And wow, that light! Either you picked the exactly perfect time of day to photograph it, or it's just all-round amazing, light-wise.
Ok, the back end of the house with the hanging sunscreen and the bazillion windows is great - the inside with all the windows and the catwalk with the high ceiling is fucking awesome. If I were going to set up a new house I would absolutely want it to be that look, so kudos to J for finding something stored in my brain. Whoa.

That's absolutely fantastic, heebie. And JRoth, if you're around, congratulations.
Despite the kids, I'm having a little trouble gauging scale. In some photos it looks absolutely huge, and in others not as much. Roughly how big is this thing? (I know there's a scale on the floor plan, but I can't make sense of it.)
Also, JRoth couldn't do anything about the stilts under your house?
Also, JRoth couldn't do anything about the stilts under your house?
JRoth can't make a floodplain go away now, can he.
If you put some dirt under there, it would look like your house was just up on a little hill.

About 700 square feet. The ceiling of the yellow kids' room is normal height, if that helps scale things.
Wow, that is amazing. And, as Blume notes, the light is fantastic -- it feels so spacious.
11: I had the exact same thought about the light. Just gorgeous.
amazing! you all are going to have such a great time living there! high ceilings can make any space feel big, and those are monsters. congrats to you guys and jroth. maybe he needs to come design my house in indonesia?
maybe he needs to come design my house in indonesia?
Beyond question.
I have to admit that I had a total blast picking out tiles, carpet, wallpaper, paint colors, etc. I just loved it.
It looks like the work of a professional.
Oh wow. I never wanted a house before, but now I do. Someone give me a tenure-track job so I can have an excuse to hire JRoth to make me a house?
It's on a horseshoe shaped track to nowhere. That's one vestigial detail leftover from some earlier talk about built in bookshelves, which is now just sort of Shel Silverstein-esque.
24: If you moved to Pittsburgh, JRoth would be closer and you could afford a house without a great job. Plus, we have bosons.
Wow. Really great. I now understand your reluctance to show this to us. I'm deeply jealous. Our relationship may never recover.
Very cool. If I trip over a sack of gold doubloons, I totally have a project for JRoth's talents.
Plus, we have bosons.
Under the influence of last night's thread, I read this as "Plus, we have beans." And was about to protest that his current local also has them, thankyouverymuch.
You can design a house from scratch and put it on the site of one of the houses being wiped away by the Susquehanna River near where I grew up. Not as close as they could be to Pittsburgh though.
Plus, don't put a house someplace where the last one was wiped away by a river.
32: to be fair, this house is just as close to a different river. Why be provincial?
32: Yeah, I always thought the Agnes crests would never be challenged in my lifetime. I think most of those will stand (especially downstream, the rain from Agnes covered a larger area), but much closer than I thought I'd see.
34.last: Hello? Neither are in Canada.
Wow.
Wow wow wow wow wow!
Also, cute kids.
24 was my initial reaction almost word for word.
Hooray! I've been waiting a long time to see these, and JRoth is as awesome as advertised!
35: Great photo comparison.
Meshoppen is way upstream. Wilkes-Barre still waits to see if the new, extra-high dikes will turn out to have been a waste of money. And then, Harrisburg.
The West Branch Susquehanna is getting into the act as well, with towns like Montoursville and Muncy largely underwater.
Damn, that turned out really well. Mazel tov to all involved.
It's gorgeous, heebie and JRoth! What a lovely space for your kids and family, and the light truly is perfect. The outside space looks great, too. You should know that I totally want to see pictures of it with furniture, too.
Allow me to be the first to say that's awesome, and I love the guy wires. Huzzah to all.
I don't even own a house, but I think this is fantastic.
Incredible work, seriously. Congratulations to you and great job by JRoth.
Excellent. Really nice hot climate organisation too as far as I can see, with very little stagnant air. (I have to admit I don't really see the point of the pit, but it's a very nice pit, as pits go.)
Oh, it's lovely! Look forward to seeing the furnished photos when everything is finally sorted.
I have to admit I don't really see the point of the pit
JRoth regretfully informed heebie that the pendulum wouldn't be structurally robust and might get in the way at parties.
Too bad the pit isn't deeper. That seems a little ankle breaky.
But if it was much deeper it would be neck breaky, which I'm pretty sure isn't the outcome you're looking for. Unless it is...
Wow... that is super awesome. The real picture looks even that much more awesome than the architectural drawing. Congrats.
Gorgeous. Now I want land for JRoth to build me a house.
There's a big green space right in the middle of the island.
I don't really see the point of the pit
It's BYOBroad Sword.
I love it! And your ability to predict how things will look when they're all put together is excellent. I was worried that the rug would be too much when you posted the individual blocks, but you were so right. It looks perfect.
Heebie, would you talk about what you ended up deciding about the kids' room? It does look like a long room, which I know was one of the options, but I forget what the final plan was. We're trying to figure out what our plans are there and I'd love to hear your thinking.
I love it. Excellent work.
Darn cute kids too.
That is a wonderful space, and I see Punch is enjoying it. I have to say, though, that I expected the carpet to be a more complicated tessellation.
I hope that JRoth tested that deck to withstand the weight of Unfogged.
I wish *I* behaved like an adult.
55 gets it exactly right. And the wallpaper is gorgeous on walls of that scale.
Geebies and JRoth, you guys made such an amazing space. I bet it feels great to spend time there. It surely looks great.
I am seized with envy. Nice work, Geebies and JRoth.
Thank you all!
Too bad the pit isn't deeper. That seems a little ankle breaky.
I really wanted a pit that was two stairs deep. But we didn't get the full scoop on flood plain restrictions until the drawings were 98% complete, and so when we found out a deep pit would have been ok, it would have required redrawing floor joists and extensive modifications. I was mildly sad.
Despite the kids, I'm having a little trouble gauging scale
Ha!
But we didn't get the full scoop on flood plain restrictions until the drawings were 98% complete,
Full scoop … full scoop … scoop!
You shoulda just scooped out an equivalent volume beneath the pit!
I don't think that's how floods work.
You could build a ramp up to the edge of the pit.
59: The kids room as it stands is 10'-10" x 14'-0", with a 5'-0" x 2'-5" niche at one end. It's set up to be able to put a wall right down the middle (where the post is) should that be desired. That would make 2 tight little bedrooms, but adequate considering how much adjacent space is available.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words, and to Heebie for her active promotion of this. It's by far my most gratifying project, and the end result is fantastic. H-G certainly did a wonderful job with colors and materials (yes, the colored blocks are true linoleum, 100% rapid growth, renewable, nontoxic, beautiful).
Oh! You didn't show them the cool built-in bathroom sink cabinet with drawers that have lids so that kids can stand on them to reach the sink (that was H-G's idea, so I can call it awesome). She also picked out excellent hardware for the drawers.
I would also like to draw attention to the fearful symmetry of the windows, in which the door+sidelite to the laundry area/mudroom is matched by a window with matching mullion on the opposite side.
Also, you can see how functional the sunshade is, with the shaded light that lands on the linoleum. The room was super-cool even in the midst of the insane Perry Heatwave of '11.

OMG brilliant. I would like to see how this works.
81: I'll post a link later this weekend.
Oh wow. Coming in late here, but wow: it is lovely. The light, the breathing room. Good chi! Congratulations, and compliments.
I really like the complementary colors/textures of the grass reeds on the walls of the pit, and the pit's carpeting (is that carpeting?)
Wow! heebie and JRoth, this is really something. Love the colours and the textures, and the light, and the sense of spaciousness. Very impressive!
Also: the pseudonymous kids are ridiculously cute.
OMFG! I can't believe I just typed that, but I do believe it was deserved. Everything about this is fabulous, especially the amazing wallpaper.
Oh and ps: Rick Perry sucks. The end.
