I thought we had said 3 might be better? Or was it just that Bave said he wouldn't be there until after 3?
So I guess the lurkers should probably feel welcomed.
I think a couple people thought 3 would be better. I won't be there till just after 3:30, but I wouldn't be offended if you started at 2.
Maybe we could split the difference and start at 2:30?
I just figured I would get there at 2 and people could show up whenever. But okay, 2:30.

I just spent the last two hours spelling out "OC" in lights on the windows of my lab. Hopefully people finish the "UPPY" and it stays up long enough for me to see it.
|>
Also, hopefully they can spell better than me.
OKAPI WALL STREET. (Surely this belongs somewhere in García Lorca's "Danza de la muerte". Portions of that poem would sound pretty awesome through a megaphone.)
O'Cuppy's is a plausible name for a meet-up bar in Boston.
They once tried to carve Frank Norris's face into Mount Rushmore, but the granite wasn't hard enough for his beard.
Now I am imagining a whole series of Chuck Norris jokes replayed as Frank Norris jokes. Why do this to me?
I'm afraid Frank Norris didn't even have a beard, if I can believe Google Image Search, but I couldn't resist dumping my pointless free-associating onto the blog.
The Pit looks more Occupy than Octopi.
Perhaps Halford can finish the "Epic of the Wheat" in a more Chuck Norris vein.
OT to Blume - Made the Saveur recipe for saupiquet last night after you linked it a bit ago, and it was excellent! Accolades all around the dinner table. Many thanks!
Yay! I love that recipe. It, plus braised cabbage, are the only two things I know of to use up my big tin of juniper berries. Perhaps I should be cooking more game.
21: When I have juniper berries, I make gin. Unfortunately my spice box seems to have gotten lost in the move, so I don't have an excuse yet and need to buy more.
OCTOPI WALL STREET
I'll get Halloween photos up asap, I swear.
21: Marcella Hazan's stewed pork with juniper and porcini is excellent.
They spelled it correctly! Hooray for my lab-mates!
Hello, this thread! It's you and me now.
Would you... would you like to dance?
Yes, my dear, they are playing Gilbert O'Sullivan. How did you know?
Anyhow, today was kind of a letdown, thread, after the excitement of last night's sign-making.
Yes, more stats class.
No no, it hasn't gotten any better. Just the same.
Right, plus it's getting dark awfully early. I think also I've been terribly busy and am in kind of a lull (which isn't actually a lull; I still have a ton to do) which brings down my energy level, or at least makes me procrastinate.
I know! Unfogged is terrible for procrastinating today. It's like those other threads are trying to make us work, thread. Well, not that you work, thread. You just kinda lie there.
I mean, I dunno. I'm just making conversation. No it isn't a stupid question. You're a stupid question. Does too make sense!
Oh okay, that's it. I just ask if you have a puppy and you go freakin' nuts. What's the matter, thread? Scared of puppies? Huh. HERE'S A PUPPY IN YOUR FACE, THREAD.
NO IT IS NOT THE GOOD KIND OF PUPPY FIGHT. FIGHTING WITH PUPPIES IS NOT OKAY.
Oh, that kind of puppy fight!
Tee hee hee!
I guess that's okay.
Whoah, whoah, but that's cutting it a little close! Let's not have the kind of puppy fight that leaves that kind of mark, mmmm?
Sorry, thread. I wandered off. What's been up here?
I take it I'm not supposed to comment here because that would break the streak...
Anyway, still can't do the meetup because of my trip, but as part of said trip I'm going here for dinner and I know someone who speaks German wants to translate the menu for me and make a recommendation, otherwise I'll just order anything with the word bier in it.
This thread is for me and the thread. NOBODY ELSE!
Wait, no, that can't be right.
I'm not sure I'm ready for that kind of commitment.
Anyhow, I don't speak German, but I think you should order the horse.
Actually the only downside to intruding into the ravishing pas de deux between the thread and I is that it makes it harder for me to figure out on-topic ways to keep this thread near the top of the comment bar.
I'm not a big fan of the Kloß, the German dumpling that comes with a lot of those dishes. It's that yellow ball you see in the photos on the 'Spiesen' page. All the ones I've ever had were heavy and somewhat tasteless. Wirsing is savoy cabbage and Blaukraut is, oddly enough, red cabbage. The Rindfleisch mit Kren, Preiselbeeren und Kloß could be good - beef with horseradish, lingonberries, and dumpling. If your sauce is tasty enough, the Kloß can just serve as a vehicle for that.
The carp (Karpfen) looks like somehwat of a house specialty, and you avoid the bowling ball dumpling with those dishes.
If you happen to be there on a Sunday, I'd go with the duck ("1/4 Ente") or the pork shank ("Haxe").
The menu notes that they also have daily specials on the chalkboard, so that might be the way to go.
Note also the excellent selection of schnapps on the last page for 2 Euros a shot. If need to get wasted on a budget, there's no better way.
Meanwhile, Lord Hobo has added pork schnitzel with spaetzle to its menu. Probably not on a level that the german speakers would accept, but who knows.
If your sauce is tasty enough, the Kloß can just serve as a vehicle for that.
That's kind of the idea. Klöße are only served alongside meat dishes with sauce.
We had a Swabian stay with us for several weeks this fall, but she couldn't convert us from knoepsche to spaetzle.
That Kloss looks pretty unappetizing. Kloesschen are preferred.
(You folks probably don't know that my wife's maiden name is Klos . . .)
It will be on Sunday, so maybe I'll go with the duck. I was trying to figure out what those drinks were- every time I go to Europe I always forget how alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are roughly the same price. Not sure who's paying- I think some division of the EU, and I assume their policy on alcohol is more enlightened than the NIH. Thanks for the tips.
Not making that mistake, Knecht, not at all.
Note also the excellent selection of schnapps on the last page for 2 Euros a shot. If need to get wasted on a budget, there's no better way.
Seriously.
Try the Bärlauch or the Pfifferling.
Knoblauch! Bananenbrand! This is nuts!
(no, the Haselnuss and Walnuss are nuts.)
47: That should have been "Iself".
I think you mean I Self
52 Meanwhile, Lord Hobo has added pork schnitzel with spaetzle to its menu.
One wonders why SP would feel the need to visit Germany at all, then.
That's kind of the idea. Klöße are only served alongside meat dishes with sauce.
Right, but one might still wish for something a bit tastier and less disgustingly textured to do the job.
savoy cabbage
Does the "voy" in "Savoy" rhyme (approximately) with "boy" or "bois"?
I've always assumed it's the latter, but the only time I heard it pronounced the speaker used the former. To clarify that I understood what he was talking about*, I asked about the other pronunciation and suddenly it looked like I was one of those annoying people who correct pronunciations of foreign sounding words.
*The conversation was about European history, anyway, not cabbage. And at the time, none of us were historians, not that I really am now.
Savoie en francais (as in bois), Savoy as in boy in English, Savoia in Italian.
Great. This is why we need Esperanto.
Right, but one might still wish for something a bit
tastier and less disgustingly textured to do the job.
Indeed. In truth, I prefer Knödel for that purpose.
So, what's the difference between a Kloss and a Knoedel?.
69: the former is made with potato, the latter with bread.
it's getting dark awfully early
You don't say.
Savoie en francais (as in bois), Savoy as in boy in English, Savoia in Italian.
The definition of savoir-faire.
Unless they are leberknoedel, which are made of evil. Trapnel, does this menu make you miss the Old Country too? I have to stop looking at the beer list now, it's making me sad.
When is the Last Frontier meet-up happening, teo? That would amuse me greatly.
Whenever I find any other commenters up here. Don't hold your breath.
There have apparently been some good job openings in Juneau.
I've heard Juneau is nice. I've only been to the ferry terminal there, which is 20 miles outside of town, so I can't say much about it from personal experience. The surrounding area is spectacular, though.
Trapnel, does this menu make you miss the Old Country too?
Not really; I was never a big fan of the cuisine. An ex-roommate from HD is in town for a conference this week, though, which may produce nostalgia.
75. made me think for a moment that somebody'd organised a meetup on the space station, which would be awesome, if expensive. Then I recalled the subtle distinction between the Last Frontier and the Final one.
If you need something hefty, the beef-in-beer gulasch will probably be very good and will certainly make the kloss worthwhile.
81: Alaskans have for many years resisted the calls to change the state's nickname to the "Penultimate Frontier."
So should we all get together and bump this post today or tomorrow? Woo, meetup, am I right?
Yes! Tweety and I will be there, anyway. I mean, we meet up all the time, but if you come too, emdash, it will be an official meetup.
Tricycles are cooler than motorcycles anyhow!
I was thinking we could get other people to confirm their attendance if we pumped up this thread enough, but that seems not to be the case. Regardless, I'm pretty sure other people will be there.
I promise nothing, but it's not impossible that I'll be in Cambridge tomorrow.
I was about to list a time when I'll be there, then I started to adjust it for my habitual lack of punctuality, then I worried that if I did that, I would be even later. So: I'll be there sometime.
Hobo has these oxtail and gruyere fritters? Just delicious.
Weehoo! Thanks, stan. I will totes liveblog, by way of thanks.
If you changed it to say "2:30" that would be even more awesome, and I would do my very best to drunkenly liveblog. (Or, if I'm not drunk, fake it.)
I should be there. Pesky bus shuttle.
I'm coming. I'm the one who sent out the initial e-mail, and Bave will be there after 3, and the ruprechts said that they would attend.
The Ruprechts will arrive around the same time as Bave.
Anyone want to make a last appeal to SP to come get loaded before his flight?
We should be there in 15 minutes or so.
Actually just spent two hours at chuck e cheese.
We are here at Chuck E Cheese!
Or wait, no, we're at Hobo.
So you definitely need some beer, right?
(On my way myself. Let's see how well this pretends to be the Red Line)
Do they allow kids in before a certain hour
110: I think so? Never tried, but it is also a restaurant. They aren't carding people.
We are talking to emdash about RFPs.
110: After 184,086 hours, kids are welcome in any bar.
I believe I've arranged for a 15 minute drop in.
On my way now. Lost track of the time. Oops.
We have a lurker! Also, Alfrek MacSteinie (sp?) is here, and by all appearances super nice.
Is the food Hobonic? (Yes, I keep reading it as Lord Holbo and then thinking of Holbonic.)
Lost track of the time
What about space?
You know what would be cool? A Chuck E. Cheese where the kid stuff was all on the ground floor, and then above it was soundproofed lounge, with those big slanty windows like at the stock exchange, where the adults could hang out and keep an eye on the kids and get drunk. Oh, and the lounge would also have a Goodfellas-esque '50s Mafia theme, with decent Italian food and lots of really good, authentic cocktail recipes.
essear! SP! SP's son! This meetup is off the hizzy!
119: It's about time, it's about space. Did any memory of this song/show survive past its one year run?
Fleur and Bave are holding the crowd rapt.
Alfrek MacSteinie is having Fernet for the first time; I think he kinda likes it!
It is down to the hardcore now. We are trying to convince Alfrek MacSteinie and The Artful Chicken to comment more, but they are distrustful. Convince them, commentariat!
Sure.
1. Nothing can ever go wrong when you comment more.
2. Commenting more is liberating! Just establish your cred as someone likely to say just about anything, and you're golden.
3. Commenting more makes things more interesting. Think about it: doesn't it get boring when it's the same 15 people commenting over and over again? Sure it does. Unfogged is eager to hear from more commenters, I swear that is a fact.
I promise not to use any of their comments as the basis for a pun for the rest of 2011.
I had to leave early, because my BF got tired. It was a lovely time. I'm only sorry that I didn't get to say hello to essear.
Fleur and I left ever so slightly too late... Got to the station in time to see the taillights of our train to PDBS. Now we have no choice but to get extra drunk until the next train in the Sunday schedule three hours from now.
Oh what a night! So great to see everyone 3d! I heart unfogged!
We (The Artful Chicken and I) had a great time meeting you all. The Fernet was great, aa was the other one you got me to try, though I still like Becherovka more. We're very drunk getting Vietnamese food now. They're playing soft rock female singer playing shook me all night long. Its aweful. Moby, we love puns, so we release you from that promise.
And I heard that y'all thought I was the TOS when I first posted. Thats hilarious.
The other one was Averna. Thank goodness you got drunk enough!
Blume and I finally made it home. I'm pretty sure we had all sorts of beer.
It was great to see everyone! I also hope Alfrek and the Chicken will comment more.
I had some sort of negroni involving rye?, then a sazerac, then something chartreuse, and now I remain more drunk than I ever intended to be.
some sort of negroni involving rye?
That would be a boulevardier.
Seems to be, although they called it the "1794."
I should really drink more of the cocktails at Hobo, as they're delicious. But the beer, too, is so delicious!
I used exclamation points in this thread!
Clearly I left too early. You all were delightful.
Yaaaaaaay, meetup! It was awesome that SP dropped in. Now we're just waiting for Knecht and Fleur to weigh in to tell us whether they got too drunk and missed the next train too!
They're still drifting from bar to bar, phone batteries dead, hoping that someday another train to PDBS will come. It's a "Charlie on the MTA" for our times.
I am so very thankful that my drunken, rambling, pseudo insightful post I thought I made from the taxi ride home did not make it on this thread! We made it home finally- Kiss 108 rocking us out the entire ride. I need to get out more.
It was wonderful to see everyone last night. Great time!
Woo, Berlin meetup! Sadly I didn't get to do any of the sightseeing Blume suggested because my connection in Amsterdam was fogged in so I didn't get to my hotel until 5pm. I'm not sure who my kid thinks you all are.
