Doctors are self-conscious commodities. Too.
"It would be counterproductive to bankrupt myself by seeing everyone uninsured who came along" / "I'd like to treat them, but the hospital won't provide its resources" / "They can go to County or the free clinic, that's what they're for."
A million excuses, but none of them compatible with not simultaneously advocating forcefully for universal coverage (including the undocumented) or single-payer.
Is it really just a perfunctory graduation ritual?
Yes.
Also, this oath doesn't obviously cut either way.
Is it really just a perfunctory graduation ritual?
Not even, given that it bans abortion is is mostly concerned with trade guild rules that are over 2,000 years old.
There are various Hippocratic oaths. One of the very early ones has as, like, #2 the refusal to perform abortions.
The one I'm looking at also bans euthanasia.
Would it be churlish to mention the many liberal arguments against oaths, pledges, etc., etc.?
6 and 7 should look at the oath linked in 4, which does neither of those things.
1: It's probably all the Crossfit.
One of the very early ones has as, like, #2 the refusal to perform abortions.
The original version according to the link in 4 also has #1 as "pay your teacher."
Also the modern version appears to have been written by someone named "Louis Lasagna."
Doctors become apathetic. It's the system.
For those who are interested in such things, the author of the post has an interesting Twitter feed. Also, she could have (but did not) assisted in Justin Bieber's delivery (same hospital, same year.)
Oh, oh, TCB was written on the side of Elvis's airplane: Taking Care of Business.
