Something Anatole France something something.
Krugman has been lending his blog to a colleague who has been documenting the if-you-squint-right-it's-legal demolishing of Hungary's democracy by its current government (rewriting the constitution, packing the Supreme Court, and allowing a political appointee to determine which judges hear which cases are the major moves I can recall). I don't have a funny punchline, but maybe Stanley can do something with "Cro-Magyar".
Stanley, you ignorant slut, I've heard more racist and sexist bullshit in Los Angeles than I ever heard in Alabama. Nor do Alabama cops tend to gun down people for what is apparently the amusement factor.
I've never lived in AL so I guess I can't directly compare, but SLC hosted the FOP convention last year and it sure seemed like the guys from a couple of the southern states were surprisingly casual about dropping the n-word into casual conversation.
3: LA has the advantage of higher density, so at any given rate of vocal and explicit racism, it's more likely to be visible to you in LA.
