Re: Fast and Furious

That is informative. Thanks. Just don't do it again on a day when I should work.

I figured that that was a lost cause, and people could use a break from the endless PPACA-decision-parsing.

I'm just happy that conservatives have come around to the realization that there needs to be tighter controls on gun purchases to prevent them from falling into the hands of criminals.

I don't know, I haven't seen anyone expressing concern about the 99.9% of the Sinaloa cartel's assault weapons that were bought legally in Arizona by their own associates. Only the ones that were theoretically delivered to them by an ATF agent.

Yeah, Holder has Cheny-like tendancies. He's also into shutting down dispensaries of the medicinal weed.

Wait, so you are claiming that conservatives are being transparently inconsistent on this issue for partisan purposes? Sorry, I that's a bit far-fetched....

No, it doesn't seem that he is. I think someone may have alerted him to the secret plan whereby supporters of medicinal weed eventually hope to legalize recreational weed as well. I'd hate to be the stoner who spilled the beans on that one. That would be a serious mellow harsh.

We have medicinal weed on the ballot this fall in Massachusetts, and I was recently asked to sign a petition for flat-out legalization (instead of the weird 1oz almost-decriminalization we currently have). Not very secret, but perhaps jumping the gun a little bit.

I am massively hostile to exploring the details of this program in the context of Darrell "Dickhead" Issa's inquisition and fishing expedition. It was a minor screw-up within the massive organization known as the Federal government. The fact that we are having this conversation reinforces that the terrorists have won.

I think its funny how quickly the Obama administration capitulated in admitting to far more malfeasance than seems to have been the case. And I'm happy to see that doing so hasn't done them any favors.

When before has anyone been held in contempt of Congress? I'm remembering back when those DOJ-hiring scandal couldn't get DOJ officials to answer questions or sometimes even show up, and some activists talked about holding them in contempt (even having the committee ?bailiffs haul them to jail), and I'm wondering if the Republicans just filed away that idea for later, or if there were other earlier times it was talked about.

Yeah, this is all a tempest in a teacup. So a fairly stupid federal initiative resulted in someone getting killed. How many people have died of tainted meat thanks to slashed FDA funding over the last 30 years? Like, 10,000?

Also, Minnesota & New Jersey: Objectively picking up the slack for the rest of you losers.

Poor Özil. He looked so sad at the end. At least he got that penalty goal.

I don't know soccer well enough to tell whether the Italian defense was just amazing, the German finishers just fucked up, or it was just luck, but it seemed like all those crosses and corner kicks into the penalty box, that in other games turned into points, just fell wrong and got harmlessly knocked away. Ah, well.

30: Yes, the NRA made it a test vote or scorecard vote or whatever the hell they call it. All stemming back to the crazed conspiracy theory that it was false flag operation designed to build support for gun control. This one was up there with the various Clinton Derangement Symptom ones from the '90s in terms of flat-out crazy.

Dumb, uninformed question, but: why didn't Holder just hand over the documents that were subpoena'd? And prove that there was no such operation?

I believe he claimed that they would compromise ongoing investigations. He agreed to let Issa inspect them in camera, but Issa wouldn't take anything but a public release.

I'm sure there are some unforced errors that would be exposed, and other not great stuff in there. And basically they correctly viewed it as a fishing expedition by Issa. Also probably some legitimate ongoing investigation stuff. Also some actual meetings with gun control advocates in the wake of the Giffords shooting.

I was never quite sure what the scandal with F&F was, anyway. Sometimes the headlines made it sound as if people were scandalized at the very idea of a run walking operation. But that can't be right, since the ATF has been doing those for a long time, under both Democratic and Republican administrations. So the scandal must have been somehow in the way it was run, but you have to dig deeper than I have ever been willing to dig to find out what.

The fact that I would have had to dig to even find out what the scandal was mostly just made be think there was no scandal.

Yeah, I think the scandal has no content at all, even in the world where it isn't a bunch of lies. It's one of those postmodern framing operations to make "Border Security Agent" good guys and "ATF Agent" bad guys in the public mind.

The talking points from the Committee on Right Thinking are that the gun walking was a Political Act, to trace the guns all the way to the Mexican Cartels for the purpose of stronger gun control in the 2nd Amendment abandoned US of A. The death of a Border Patrol Agent by said walked guns proves that the gunwalking is a stupid idea, if not treasonous.

Never assign malice where incompetence or neglect is the more likely culprit.

This argument makes no sense, lots of scandalous stuff has been going on for a long time under both Democratic and Republican adminstrations. Somebody getting killed tends to attract attention.
