Re: Clueless

What is so oblivious/clueless in it? It's a nice confrontation to watch, but ISTM Romney could tell by the second question that the querent was on the other side of the issue.

This is from December 2011. It was even linked here then, I think, probably in the comments.

Disappointed that he didn't introduce his husband to Romney while he was there.

The description of it (most awkward Romney moment EVAR!!1!, was the impression I had going into it) made the actual video a letdown when I saw it a few days ago, but still, it was good. A funny reminder that old male veterans are gay sometimes too, and it was funny to see Romney assuming that this guy was a friendly audience, at least at first, when he was anything but.

This upworthy Web site seems annoying. I get that user-generated content is the big money-making trend on Web sites. That general trend can be annoying because they are often fairly mindless, of dubious value at best to original creators, and tend to force multiple clickthroughs for no good reason, but I admit they're often entertaining. Junk food entertainment. Upworthy, though, seems (a) particularly blatant about it (it's right in the name), (b) seems to add particularly little value, and (c) seems to be almost entirely videos, which I can't watch at work, so sour grapes.

On checking stuff for this comment, I learned two things. First, as far as I can tell we never talked about The Oatmeal lawsuit here, and if so I'm surprised - it was a great story. And second, I didn't know until now that Upworthy was apparently founded to be specifically political and left-wing, not a general meme aggregator. So it's an interesting niche to try to fill and good for them, I guess, but it's still annoying.

I was wondering if anyone would talk about Upworthy. I agree it's annoying in its blatantness, but it doesn't seem to be strictly user-generated - it's just a small team that picks out a few things a day to promote. I liked the one with the Irish president.

What's interesting about the Oatmeal story? A spurious lawsuit against a popular website around which the Internet rallies and which unsurprisingly prevails.

Why do I bother even trying to check my facts, if I get stuff like that wrong anyway?

(a) Some people around here like to talk about IP law, so I thought it might have set them off. (b) The result might not have been surprising, but I still found it impressive and/or an entertaining train wreck on the bad guy's part. Maybe I'm too easily amused or something.

Oh, I'm easily amused too. But while I read The Oatmeal, I don't take much interest in the community surrounding it, for much the same reason that I don't read Boing Boing anymore.

I don't get which student 6 means. From the ATM? The football player? I'm being dense.
