Let me be the first to say, "Let's!"
Is there an Orlando commentariat? I have a couple extra nights there coming up before a conference.
What are some past meetup sites? I don't much follow meetup threads I'm not involved in.
I don't much follow meetup threads I'm not involved in.
They mostly consist of people suggesting Fresh Salt.
|| Why are url bar searches in Chrome now ask.com searches? I don't like it.|>
Not for me, and it seems counterintuitive. Ask.com has one of those annoying searchbars it bundles with software - maybe an extension has been installed without your knowing it?
The Chrome url bar searches whatever your default is. Could be there's no toolbar installed, just a change in the defaults (which you can change back in the settings somewhere).
Per 6.last, did you just do a java update for instance? At the end of the last one I did it asked if I wanted to make ask.com my toolbar or default search. You could uncheck the box, but if you were not paying attention you'd probably think it was accepting terms and conditions or something similar. Yucky stuff.
Fixed, thanks. One less topic for the folks meeting in Austin, I guess.
I'll be in and out.
12/26 (arrive in Austin midday) - 1/29 (leave early) *
1/01 (arrive very late) - 1/03 (leave very early)
* This might get pushed back to leaving Austin on 1/30
That's a Wednesday, I think? We could certainly do that.
I can do 1/2.
Spiderhouse? Liberty?
Alternatives:
The Butterfly Bar on Manor has a nice quiet patio. It doesn't have food itself but is right by El Chilito and Hoover's.
The Whip In is great, if people are hankering for an Indian fast-foodery / brewery / convenience store / folk club.
Given our nightmarish cold snap (40 degrees?! What is this, Alaska?), we'll have to make sure we're back to normal patio weather by then, but otherwise those all sound good.
I don't know the Butterfly Bar, but El Chilito is great.
Do they have an decent-sized tables at the Whip In, though? I don't recall any.
Minivet, anything in particular you want to experience while you're here? Brisket, queso (shudder), people with 2/3 of their visible skin tattooed?
The Whip In has big tables outside. But I love love love El Chilito. And El Chile.
Never been to the Butterfly Bar, but happy to try new things.
I'm sorry to hear you've never had awesome queso, Kraaby.
Which of the places might be on the unfamiliar side to someone who lived in Austin until 2002?
People lived in Austin before 2002? With the exception of maybe Spiderhouse, I believe all these places are newer than that or have changed dramatically in character and offerings since then. Butterfly Bar is less than 2 years old, still under the radar, and doesn't blast music, but it's only wine and beer, if that's a concern/consideration.
I mean the _kind_ of thing that one wouldn't have seen in Austin before; I know bars and restaurants die and start all the time regardless of trends.
(For when this thread is bumped. Unless people manage that conversation-within-a-dead-thread thing that I always miss.)

More meetups!
What about Boston? AWB is going to be in town...sometime...soon? Let's have a meetup!
|>
I just got back from my trip to find a lovely Fuck You, Clown card waiting for me. Thanks, Heebie!
Anyone going to be in San Diego for the AEA or Joint Math Meetings? This lurker would meet up.
22: Yes, we must have a meetup for White Bear.
I will also be in Boston soon- I get in the 3rd and leave the morning of the 7th.
Now that I'm looking through the suggestions, Butterfly Bar seems great - especially on noise and seating criteria.
What time? I forgot that the kids have gymnastics on Wednesday, so I may be solo.
So, to sum up, for the Austin meet-up (why can't all these other people get their own damn meet-up/Chrome issues thread?), the current proposal on the table is:
Wednesday, January 2nd
Butterfly Bar (2307 Manor Rd, 78722)
no earlier than 7pm.
How's that work for everybody?
Can we have a thread exploring the possibility of a Boston meetup, please?
We should do something between the 3rd and 7th so we catch both messily and AWB.
If we did it on a Monday or Tuesday it would be quieter. Maybe The Lord Hobo? Or Backbar?
Oh duh. Monday is New Years Eve. How festive am I?
I am always already prepared to go to Backbar.
Really mcmc of 36, you are such an idiot. I was thinking Monday Jan 7 when I posted 35. Tuesday Jan 8 would be outside the window of opportunity. But yeah, Sunday Jan 6 or Monday Jan 7? Might be quietest at either location?
It is just possible that if this were to occur on Saturday the 5th, JM and I would do something crazy like get on a bus.
I'm leaving the morning of the 7th, so if you do Monday evening it will be sans me. But either Saturday or Sunday (the 5th or 6th) would be fine for me.
41, 42: Sounds like Saturday the 5th would be the best possible day. Backbar seems to take reservations, so now we need a time and a rough headcount. Maybe we can get a post of our very own?
I thought I timed my bump request to keep it on the front page, but I'm not sure how that's actually determined.
Hooray!
To recap:
Wednesday, January 2nd
Butterfly Bar (2307 Manor Rd, 78722)
no earlier than 7pm
No Bostonians, visitors to Boston, or Chrome Users allowed
I thought I timed my bump request to keep it on the front page
Your bump request? Fogga please.
RememberTFA: this was bumped once before, late last week.
We can't find a baby-sitter to get here before 7, which means we probably can't get there before 7:45ish.
I'm actually an out and proud Chrome user myself, I was just ribbing the threadjackers. Take that, threadjackers!
So, you're telling me I uninstalled Chrome and switched to Opera for nothing!?
I actually need to pack and buy some things for a trip, since I'm flying out tomorrow and I haven't had time to do any preparation whatsoever.
Will this still be going around 9:30-10? Have to get ready for my own flight tomorrow morning. Also, the Butterfly Bar is inside a fenced compound called "The Vortex" that has a small theater and other entertainments, which makes it not super visible from the street. There is a big dirt and gravel parking lot streetside of the wooden fence and gate that leads into The Vortex, for which I believe there is a sign on Manor.
Also, given the cold, availability of seating inside may be an issue. If people decide to relocate, you can email me at the linked address (I can check email from my phone).
We'll keep you posted, Crim. Bulg.
We welcome lurkers (and browsers) of all stripes.
C.B., we're still here. Where you at?
Wait liveblog liveblog liveblog come on do it do it
The cocktails here are indes cribable.
Are you guys ribbing the threadjackers?
I liked the cribables better before they went indes.
The floor show beggars description.
You should ask the floor show beggar what makes them so indes, then.
I will stop by on my way home.
He's truly describable, in a good way.
We should probably all go home now. This has dragged on a little long.
