Heebs, what's the total cost for the house?
J, Robot, x. trapnel, and I have dibs on one of the rooms, preferably one that's big enough for three bodies. My babysitter will be staying home with the babies. Hooray! The plan is that the kids can go to our friends' farm and Lee and I will both have the weekend (or maybe just part of it for her) off.
$1434 for three nights. I don't know that it will be full on Friday/Sunday night, but you pretty much have to do a three day rental over Memorial Day weekend.
Extra money that isn't needed to cover party costs nor scholarship costs will go to LB, to cover web hosting costs.
Molly and I can stay at my folks place, but I was imagining there would be one night where a lot of people would want to sleep on the couches and floor, rather than taking a cab home late at night.
We can also leave our kids with my mom, but if there is Unfoggeddaycare available, we might take advantage of it some of the time to take pressure of my mom. We can chip in $$.
I'm not paying for web hosting anymore. I think nosflow is.
I mean, I'll take your money, I'm not proud.
I was imagining there would be one night where a lot of people would want to sleep on the couches and floor with each other rather than taking a cab home late at night.
6: If a lot of people think they'll want to crash, we should definitely consider renting the apartment as well. From the photos, it's hard to tell how big the house is, but D.C. rowhouses can run small.
This is a good source for traditional B&Bs, unhosted B&Bs and small apartments you can rent: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/washington-district-of-columbia.html
I've stayed in a few of them in the past and had good experiences with the management company.
They have some apartments quite close to the party house that look like they would be a good deal if several people wanted to share them: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/dc-washington-eastern-market-suites.html
Not that I'm going to be present to hear any answer given in the next four hours, but what is an "unhosted B&B"?
A room with a box of Clif Bars in it?
11 is sort of right. It's a house with rooms rented individually and shared living room and kitchen space, but no host there to cook or annoy you with "conversation." It's kind of great, actually.
Some of the them have a nominal breakfast, but it's muffins in Saran Wrap and that sort of thing.
I made a map! People should add stuff to it.
If anyone needs extra space, I can offer a mattress & bathroom in our basement (finished).
Where is the rental? I'd add to Kraab's map, but I don't want to go too far afield. (Look...Gettysburg!)
I am an idiot. It is right there in the map.
6: Oh, OK. Then I will leave O with your mom.
Hey, the rental house is right in my neighborhood! I know a ton of good stuff near there. This is a dumb question, but how do you add to the map? I can't find whatever the relevant button is.
I'm planning on coming but I'm really half-assed about the actual making plans bit. I'll be coming down by myself and I think I'd rather meet y'all before making plans to sleep with you - I'm old fashioned like that.
I mentioned this on the wiki-type-thing, but do we really want to make the address of the place public?
Also, if Mary Catherine has room in her car and is willing to transport spirits, I can purchase some of the alcohol in my home state, where it is much cheaper than in DC.
do we really want to make the address of the place public?
I would think not.
I'd really, really like to go. Taxes are taking a pretty huge chunk this year though. Also, as I mentioned before, my own room, be it ever so humble, would be good. I'll sleep in a closet or whatever, but nobody else is gonna be able to sleep with me in the same room, so.
Unfortunately, other than Unfoggers, I'm pretty sure I do not know anyone in DC well enough to ask to crash. I might be able to ask around in the punk scene though. The subway runs to Anacostia late at night, right?
Aha! Now I am commenting on the other other place too.
22.2: Yes, the Metro is open until 3am on Friday & Saturday (but not Sunday).
21- text is coming, eh?
You should offer sponsorships to chip in- $100 gets mouseover text, paying for the rental gets front page status for a month.
do we really want to make the address of the place public?
I agree with apo. I thought the nearby intersection in the map was good enough.
Oops, I meant read- four letter pseuds about words too similar.
I am likely to rent a hotel room with my daughter so I could do some assisting with babysitting at a hotel as my daughter will probably want to sleep around 9pm.
I am a little sad that Jane is not coming.
if Mary Catherine has room in her car and is willing to transport spirits
Across state lines? Well, I dunno.
(Yes, I have room. I also have room for one more passenger).
Go a bit over a dozen blocks straight north from the house (so that's a longish walk and a very short cab ride) and you hit the Atlas district. Lots of fun places. The Rock and Roll Hotel is perhaps best known (besides the Atlas itself). There's also a pretty good pie shop.
I think we'll probably make it. I'll shoot you an email a bit closer to the time heebie for the address.
17: I'd be happy to watch O at Rob's folks place. I'd rather not attend the main event. I may attend a side event if there is one of those.
I would like to stay in the house or in an apartment. I probably won't go if I have to stay in a hotel. I'm not destitute, but I want to be economical/frugal/am on a budget.
Also, I am up for taking the bus down if anyone wants to do that.
There's some chance I might be feeling so broke that I'd have to abandon Thorn & J. Robot in order to crash with someone for free, if that option were available, but hopefully not. Gah.
I probably won't make it myself, not because I don't want to, but because this spring has already turned into "random weekend trips to the East and Midwest extravaganza" and I can't add one more. However I will absolutely contribute to the scholarship fund. I'm also considering a challenge grant program, I think I will donate an extra $100 if there is a picture in the Flickr pool of Tweety wearing a Lakers/Kobe tshirt, $200 if Trapnel puts a picture into the pool (licensed for unlimite worldwide distribution) holding up a sign saying "I support the RIAA, MPAA and copyright law" and I will donate $5000 if Nosflow kills a dangerous large mammal with a knife. Do it!!
Ok, the actual challenge grant is that I will match your contributions up to a cumulative total of $500. But what is the point of my awful job of I can't use my powers for evil?
$200 if Trapnel puts a picture into the pool (licensed for unlimite worldwide distribution) holding up a sign saying "I support the RIAA, MPAA and copyright law"
Oh, man. Given the way that I'm already betraying my principles by taking this medium-term temp job proofreading marketing brochures for a for-profit quasi-academic publisher, this is seriously tempting.
Speaking of which, I've been reading this book, and while the author's own voice is smug and self-righteous and not particularly persuasive, the interviews with actual music industry folks are interesting, and mostly make up for the aforementioned downsides.
Dude you're like 3 feet from jumping into the abyss. Come to the dark side.
Should I add a sex grotto memorial $200 bonus for an ill advised hookup? Finally it's like my life has purpose.
28 I might want to passenge but am still just at 80% on whether I'm actually going so maybe I'll get back to you and see if you still have space.
Are there closer hotels?
When I looked on expedia, I wasn't able to find any hotels close to the location, but I did find a couple that were 4-5 stops away on the blue line.
Also, I'm not a local, but when I looked up Rolling Thunder and saw that they expect, "approximately 900,000 participants and spectators" it made me think that it would be a good idea to make hotel reservations early.
40: Smearcase, I'm counting on you to show up! Don't we have some mutual lusting after Matt Damon scheduled?
40: Goddammit you totally have to show. Especially after I missed my chance to meet you and the rest of the NYC crew last fall.
I will donate $5000 if Nosflow kills a dangerous large mammal with a knife
What if it's the most dangerous game?
44 was my exact response, which makes me happy. And I'd not realized Little O would be there. Little O!!!
In an unexpected turn of events, the boy likes the idea of a visit to DC for our holiday weekend, but you'll probably only see me for the main event if I do manage that.
11/12: All right, I suppose I would've guessed that if forced.
Following up on my own 10, although I didn't spend my four hours away in the canonical way - swimming, yes? - I might as well have; the reality is that I got stuck jogging in a steady rain.
I'm waiting for Halford to pledge some exorbitant sum of money for me to do something heinous to my very being before I commit.
Halford surely you'd kick in something if Smearcase offered to do some free babysitting.
I imagine my babysitting services will be in particularly high demand among people who read my comment about going to Times Square and asking a caricaturist to draw me biting a toddler in half.
Mi casa es su casa, Smearcase, but I fear they might bite back.
52: I envisaged a Steadman rendering.
Woo! Continued planning!
I will most likely either stay with other friends in the area or get a hotel room. Either way, don't worry about me for space-assigning purposes.
Does anyone else keep reading the title of this thread as "Unfoggedytalis"?
Because it can help in cases of heart failure?
Unfoggedtails, on the other hand, are what will be consumed at Unfoggedecagon.
I can't be the only regular with a vestigial tail.
It's probably more difficult to be regular with a vestigial tail. We should get Moby a stipend.
Does digitalis do that? I'd thought it was just straight-up poisonous.
Yes, it's why Sir Ambrose (who had a heart condition) had lots of it on hand, and in order to disguise the murder as accident mixed some foxglove into the salad where it was mistaken for sage.
On reflection I suppose that many poisonous things are beneficial in various ways in small quantities.
Foxglove leaves don't seem to resemble sage leaves terribly strongly.
66. It's not even near the top of the list of the most implausible things in that book.
That summer fields grew high with foxglove stalks and ivy. Wild apple blossoms everywhere. Emerald green like none I have seen apart from dreams that escape me.
There was no girl as warm as you.
I was going to add that eating raw sage in a salad (which is how I assumed it would be eaten) would be straight-up nast, but wikipedia informs me that the leaves were cooked into a stuffing.
I can't decide if I'm going to come. I'm quite comfortable with y'all as a balding 47 year old basement dweller.
There was no girl as warm as you.
You leave
nobody else
without a bed
you make
everybody else
thoroughly at home
I'm
the only one
hanged
in your
halter
you've driven
nobody else mad
but me.
Mesh cast for mackerel
by guess and the sheen's tremor,
imperceptible if you haven't the knack—
a difficult job,
hazardous and seasonal:
many shoals all of a sudden,
it would tax the Apostle to take the lot;
then drowse for months,
nets on the shingle,
a pint in the tap.
Likewise the pilchards come unexpectedly,
startle the man on the cliff.
Remember us to the teashop girls.
Say we have seen no legs better than theirs,
we have the sea to stare at,
its treason, copiousness, tedium.
Oh all right, I'll go. Enough with the arm-twisting, sheesh.
That Basil Bunting is quite convincing, it's true.
But yeah, you should totally come. These things are a lot of fun, and meeting the imaginary people in person adds another dimension to the whole experience.
$200 plus tickets if Smearcase takes two children under 6 to the Metropolitan Opera for a performance. Nigh show only.
If I go, I'll probably try to find a non-hotel option (that B&B thing Sir Kraab posted about, airbnb, craigslist, or something like that) if no within-group rooms are available. But I'm not going to know if I'm going until mid-April or possibly later. As previously mentioned, I'll be within more or less easy bus distance by then so I can decide late.
I stayed in a basement about 10-15 minutes north of there a couple years ago when I was doing research in DC. I really liked it, though I didn't really do much beyond travel to and from the LOC and NARA. I plan on visiting the cemetery.
I'm also wondering question in 18. How do I add stuff to the map? If it's easier for Sir Kraab to add stuff herself, then I'd say my favorite place to eat close to the VRBO is a pizza restaurant called Matchbox around 8th & G SE, and I'd second the recommendations in 29 of the Rock and Roll Hotel and the pie shop. They're both around 13 and H St. NE, so, like 20 blocks straight north of the house.
65- THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS AND NO ONE LISTENS TO ME!
How much would you cough up for a genuinely novel sex act, Halford?
Ok, people who would like to stay onsite:
- Bedroom from comment 2
- Bostoniangirl
- Nat
- Minivet (violating off-blog blah blah blah)
- Apo (same)
- me
- Eggplant
So it sounds like it's worth getting the lower apartment. I'll email the owner.
82: I mean, unless he's coughing up a fully-rigged ship model or something coughing up a lot of anything is going to be novel more in quantity than in kind, I'd think.
I'll only be staying Friday and Saturday nights, FWIW. I would be willing to hotel it if somebody else really needs the on-site space.
Heebie, when you email, it would be good to ask what sort of parking garages/lots are within reasonable walking distance.
I, too, would prefer onsite, but would be willing to stay in a hotel.
Re 35, who has the knife, me or the animal?
89: Is that an invitation to group sex? Because I don't think I'm ready for that.
91: No, it's a dorky dance. I think you're ready.
Whoa, whoa, wait. Is there going to be dancing at this thing? I don't think I can handle that.
There's going to be some rough sex.
Minivet (violating off-blog blah blah blah)
Not anymore.
86: Others know the neighborhood better but I would expect basically no lots or garages near the VRBO (there's a grocery store right nearby with a small garage but I think it's customer-only). Street parking possibly a pain in the ass but doable.
I haven't figured out yet whether I'll make this thing, but if I do I can offer a couple spare bedrooms and possibly a bare-bones basement apartment for people needing a place to crash (in NW DC, so not in the VRBO's neighborhood, but easy enough to get to).
Rough sex is fine, as long as it doesn't lead to dancing.
So we'll be violating the Mann Act, then?
95: Not anymore that it's a violation? Or not anymore because you can't attend?
Maybe he made a note on the piradepad thing and doesn't consider that sufficiently off-blog?
Also, I am at about 95% sure that I am going to attend now.
I've fixed the settings on the map so that anyone should be able to add to it. It's totally public, so make sure you're not adding anything you don't want the world to see. (I can make it invitation only, but then each person would have to e-mail for access.)
If you still have trouble adding to the map, let me know and I'll do it.
Yay for all the people who've said they're coming!
Gotta go add to the map, but there's been too much emphasis on H Street NE (30 minute walk) and too little on 8th Street SE (5 minute walk). Granted, H Street is cooler but there are some good places near 8th Street --
Cafe Belga -- great selection of Belgian beers, great cocktails, a dozen different kinds of mussels, very good (if slightly pricey) menu. 514 8th Street SE.
Hank's Oyster Bar / Hank's on the Hill -- between 6th and 7th on Pennsylvania Avenue -- great seafood and cocktails. If you know the one near Dupont Circle, this is just as good. Casual feel but not cheap.
Those would be my top two picks. Restaurants on Capitol Hill are generally not very good, particularly in SE, so I would be careful about going to a random place. However, a few more good ones --
Trattoria Alberto's -- near Cafe Belga on 8th Street. One of those old fashioned Italian places with a dozen different kinds of veal scallopini and elderly waiters dressed in white. Hard to find in DC, which tends more toward flashy places doing mediocre contemporary food. Really yummy if you like that style.
Montmartre -- French place right near Eastern Market. Nice casual/fancy blend and pretty good stuff, not quite as good as Belga Cafe but quite good food if you like French.
Oh, and I think there should be a new brewpub opening on 8th Street this spring, that will do all kinds of freaky-original beers. Between Belga Cafe having a huge variety of Belgian abbey beers and this new place 8th Street will be great if you're a beer afficionado.
I can't even keep up with all the new places that have been opening on 8th street, I tend to stick with my favorites...
I will be there, but I'll stay with friends.
Plus I have a friend near the rental place whose basement may also be available for rent. If we need more housing.
40: You're more than welcome to passenge. Just let me know if and when you decide.
PGD, didn't you say this was right in your neighborhood? What's the parking situation like?
It is very close to a metro stop, but I remember they don't necessarily run super late.
I booked the second unit. It's one bedroom, and one futon in the living room.
futon
Please, heebie. We're all adults here. "Flip 'n' Fuck".
110, see 23:
the Metro is open until 3am on Friday & Saturday (but not Sunday).
Trattoria Alberto's would get my vote from the list in 106. We don't have any such thing here in Mpls.
110: if you don't have a zone 6 parking permit the parking situation is not good at all. But you may be able to get at least some temporary parking permits. Given all the time we have between now and Memorial Day I could actually stop by a police station to ask about the availability and procedure for temporary permits for a rented group house.
The house is right next to a metro station but you are right that the metro closes around midnight on weekdays, 2 AM weekends. Just another way DC is anti-fun.
114: I make no great claims for it but I just love that 50s time warp style.
The house is right next to a metro station but you are right that the metro closes around midnight on weekdays, 2 AM weekends. Just another way DC is anti-fun.
The bus system runs all night, though, as I discovered at a previous UnfoggeDCon shortly after I discovered how early the Metro closes. So there is still a late-night option other than taking a cab.
What is with you people and group sex!?
It also minimizes the number of beds needed, of course.
Well, at one time, I suppose, but you probably wear them out pretty quickly.
You just need to make sure they're sturdy. And big, I guess.
Group sex doesn't imply groups sleeping together on the same bed.
Indeed, it doesn't imply any sleeping at all.
You can't fuck on the same bed twice.
That's why you have to maximize the number of people involved.
94: everyone read down in that thread until you get to "I forgot not to take out my penis."
That certainly puts an interesting spin on apo's recent effusive praise for the kid.
This is pretty much what I am expecting at the con. I will be sorely disappointed if it does not work out that way.
