As soon as you said mopey and verbal, I thought "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most"! It's one of my favorites. I sing it in the shower but I always forget quite how the modulations go in the recit. I like June Christy's recording.

June Christy is great. I put a Christy track ('Something Cool') on an earlier mix-tape. She seems to be largely forgotten in the pantheon of female jazz singers.
I doubt I'd know her if a college boyfriend hadn't played her recording of "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" for me. It is the perfect reading of that song.
I only know the famous 80s version, but we used to riff: "...so you should keep going away, until there's nothing left of me and I can't sing this song anymore..." (It doesn't stay true to tune.)
Oh, I'm thinking of an entirely different song. "Every time you go away (you take a piece of me with you)"
