I'm due for a pseud change, I'll do it at 3:55pm Saturday.
1: I was just remarking last night that I feel like, while you're around all the time, I don't have much of a sense of who you are because your pseudonym lacks resonance.
Hooray for Heebie! Good work on everything! I am excited too!
I am also much more excited than nervous, and happy to help out with grocery planning and hauling and whatnot, though I will be happily car-free.
3: bout eight foot tall, one big eye in the middle of his forehead. Rides a vespa. Thirty kids.
I am jealous.
This thread should definitely work on a new pseud for SP.
Thirty kids.
One from each goddamn dick?
I'm terribly sorry I won't be coming, especially because TWYRCL has been suddenly swept away to [foreign country] to perform in [composer's name]'s [musical genre] [name of composition] at a [word for "festival"] in some resort town.
Not Sifu and Blume. You guys really can't.
I dunno, do the vrbo rules say anything about "no delivering babies"?
You guys'll be liveblogging everything, right?
(Interpret the question as applying to UnfoggeDCon and/or the birth of Zardoz, as you wish.)
I say no liveblogging as punishment for those who do not attend. I do expect consensus talking points, however. And then over the course of the year we'll pry out the email and discussions that went into reaching consensus.
13: Sort of - they charge $25 for each extra set of linens used. Are you willing to pay $25 to clean up after your baby?
Are we expected to provide our own name tags or will they be provided?
15. You need to consider your international fan base.
17: We'll provide stickers and markers, but you'll actually have to form the letters.
And apply it to your clothing, unless we have a volunteer.
I don't see why you can't just live stream the whole thing. Or at least the knife-fighting segment.*
* You do _have_ a knife-fighting segment?
Remind me to put nametag stickers and markers on the shopping list.
Yeah, you should have cameras all over the house. Then edit the footage and shop it around to TV networks until someone decides to make House of Blog, the world's most eclectic reality show.
As long as it's not Chris Marker! Heh. Heh heh. You know, the film director?
Knife fights have been promised for YEARS now. I'm sorry to miss it but will be at a way better party that none of you are invited to.
I've thought of random resonant pseuds but they have nothing to do with me, just sound funny.
Crispix attacks (already a band name)
Planter fascist (I do like gardening)
Not sure if you like Deep Purple, but Funky Clod is untaken.
I would like to remind everyone that I dislike parties and fun generally. I plan to spend the weekend lurking in a corner, scowling.
30: sure, you say that now, but come party time you'll be holding court in the middle of the room all night like last time.
28: May I suggest Agile Tit-Tyrant.
(My new favorite bird name via someone on my Twitter feed.)
I would like to remind everyone that I dislike parties and fun generally.
"I hate fun!"
"I want a pretzel!"
holding court
That's just the natural lawyer instinct.
34: That sounds like a pseud for a squirmy baby
Re:the grocery shopping, there's a Harris Teeter just two blocks away from the house. A car may not be needed.
38: Good to know! That does make life easy.
I think, instead of the process described in 19 and 20, we should wait until everyone is there, and then you go up to someone and give them a name tag for who you think, based on their looks and the vibe they give off, they must certainly be. And then that's who everyone is for the rest of the weekend, right or wrong.
Regarding picking heebie up, I was planning on leaving Charlottesville around noon, which would have me passing(ish) Dulles around 2pm. But I can aim to leave earlier, especially for a scoop-heebie-from-the-airport mission.
Except you stick it on their forehead, and they have to figure out who they are, asking only yes/no questions.
42: Hooray! Do you have room in a backseat for an infant seat?
Both oudemia and Jackmormon have for several years owed me fancy cocktails. Will they be able to discharge their debts over the weekend?
18: 15. You need to consider your international fan base.
Maybe. I am unable to attend and will also be busy and unable to follow any live-blogging. So I am looking to poison the well for others because that's the way I roll.
46: Sweet! You're on. And you're the best.
Highs in the low 70s in DC! That sounds awesome.
Indeed. And a chance of rain tomorrow, but looks clear otherwise.
Does the Harris Teeter sell alcohol?
Four s/b Six
Door s/b Four
Civic s/b Impala
51.last: it has beer and wine.
Regret that I'll be missing this, but it's in a rare window where we could get out of DC for a decently long vacation. Enjoy!
I'm packing for the weekend, and deciding between an awesome shirt which isn't the most flattering, and a more boring tent-like shirt which is more forgiving. I think I'll go awesome, but everyone please appreciate that it's a bit outside my comfort zone.
33: come party time
If I knew it was gonna be that kind of party, I'd have brought wet wipes.
What would be unflattering about that?
I saw someone wearing this awesome shirt the other day.
I'm so jealous. The really annoying thing is that since deciding it was really far too expensive to come, I came into a bit of money. Just a few thousand (which I am mostly going to use to send my kids to Canada), but enough that I could have happily blown a few hundred on a trip to DC. BUT before I knew about the money, my cousin in Essex decided to throw an 80th birthday party for his parents (obvs my uncle and aunt), which is a three line whip really, especially as my other aunt and cousin from Canada decided to come over for it. I think this means I need to spend the money on myself on something equally frivolous, but atm I can't think of anything.
which I am mostly going to use to send my kids to Canada
Surely you should give them a second chance to reform first? The mere threat might be enough.
An express instruction how to vote could constitute a breach of parliamentary privilege, so the party's wishes are expressed unequivocally but indirectly. These whips are issued to MPs in the form of a letter outlining the Parliamentary schedule, with a sentence such as "Your attendance is absolutely essential" next to each debate in which there will be a vote, underlined one, two or three times according to the severity of the whip
59: I don't get it. She wants the D?
I kind of object to the whole nametag thing.
You can be exempt if you speak only in an outrageous french accent.
a chance of rain tomorrow,
Ugh, there goes my plan of napping in the middle of the day on Friday.
If anyone's going to be around Friday and wants to hang out, let me know. Otherwise I'll just find somewhere to read until we can meet at the VRBO.
(Suggestions for cafes that are good for hanging out and reading are also welcome!)
Also, I thought there was a Safeway near the Potomac Ave Metro.
I've never really liked going by my pseuds outside of blogs. So at meetups I've introduced myself with the relevant identifying info and then gone by my actual name.
name aka pseud or pseud aka name. I think nobody has to say the pseud aloud. Not that there'd be anything wrong with doing that.
trapnel, if you update here when you know where you're hanging out, I may come drop by for the time between when I get in and when we can go to the VRBO.
trapnel--I'm planning on hitting some Smithsonians on the mall tomorrow if you're interested. Anyone else is also welcome to join me, of course.
Maybe we can remove this part later, but for now anyone who wants to hang can reach me at either geof dot brown at geemail or at 651.788.3307.
VRBO makes me think of a Serbian tongue-twister!
I'm looking forward to meeting you all.
I put this on the piratepad, but I just noticed that the DC bikeshare system looks like it might be very useful--$15 for a 3-day pass, free trips up to 30m, $2 for
stupid html. $2 for rides up to an hour, and there are few docking stations right by the VRBO, including one that seems less than a 5 minute walk away.
More objectionable than nametags is the feeling I might be getting sick. I'm hoping it's allergies.
74: Whom you knew in college?
I don't get it. She wants the D?
Exactly. With added awesomeness from the fact that it was a gay man wearing it.
D is for Dugong
That's good enough for me
D is for Dugong
That's good enough for me
D is for Dugong
That's good enough for me
Fuck your face I'm not a manatee
70: You, of course, have to affect a fake accent all night long. We'll know you by your phoney Cockney.
I can't access the piratepad from work. But further to 76 about DC bikeshare, there is a good free app that lists the docks, the number of bikes available/open docks, etc.
This app is used for bikeshare info in a bunch of cities (e.g., Boston) so some folks might have it already. The name of the app is Spotcycle and it is available for Android and iPhone.
69
Also, I thought there was a Safeway near the Potomac Ave Metro.
There is one, it's a couple blocks north, but Harris Teeter is even closer. In fact, now that I check, HT is on the same block as the VRBO, just around the corner. Safeway is walkable if you prefer it for some reason, though.
As for pseudonyms, I'll have to think of someone else's to use.
Sad I can't come. Will be out of town all weekend at a wedding.
But here is a present for you all - the neighborhood as it was in 1913, courtesty of the library of congress (I'm currently obsessed with their online map collection).
PS for the love of god, do not go to Jack Rose. It's crowded, overpriced, and more of a see-and-be-seen affair. In a word, sucky.
Heebie:
Thank you for organizing this event! I appreciate your hard work.
Since I am driving, I can do a store run. M and I will prob arrive in DC in the middle of the day Saturday. If you want me to bring anything, please email me and I will drop it off before we check into our hotel.
I find it really weird that piratepad would be blocked from work. WTF? It's just a shared text-editor. What do you have against text editing, workplace?
The lease does not prohibit a slide & slide, does it?
FYI for people attending this thing you can make a pretty cool bomb with a lot of non-dairy creamer, a road flare, and some compressed air.
I assume they have non-dairy creamer at the Harris-Teeter, yeah?
You can also have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with those things.
It's supposed to be a fake Canadian accent.
89: It's only crowded at the times that everyone goes there.
Bourbon is better, though, albeit more specialized.
Sorry to hate on whoever's suggestion that was. There are just a few bars that I always hate being at: Jack Rose and Marvin are the main two. But I've only been at a terrible time like on a Friday night, which definitely increases the terribleness.
98: I might have been the one who mentioned it, no offense taken if I was.
It was great on something like a Tuesday something. Then I went on a Saturday night and was sad.
Is there an advantage to being at a bar, versus drinking for cheap at the group house on Friday night, too?
95: Originally filmed as "Dallas" instead of Vegas. But changed just before release because Kennedy had just been shot (and the release was delayed a bit).
93: Huh - I've heard punchlines that must be based on that fact, but I always assumed that they were just about the unpalatability of non-dairy creamer, with no basis in pyrotechnic reality.
What is it about non-dairy creamer that contributes to the explosion?
103.last: well, it's dry, reasonably flammable (it's kind of made of oil, right?) and has an incredible amount of surface area. You can do roughly the same thing with sawdust but creamer works better.
Any fine flammable powder works. It's why grain elevators occasionally just blow up.
104: Or grain dust, as various grain elevator employees have learned the hard way.
I will have a car and a membership to a wholesale club, if we need mass quantities of anything (including non-dairy creamer). Arriving early tomorrow evening.
101: Not unless either enough people have incompatible tastes to make ordering by the drink cheaper, or folks want super fancy labor-intensive cocktails like an old fashioned with hand-carved ice or a Ghost Dance.
I for one would be happy to contribute a decent to good whiskey to the cause of drinking in. I can bring Bowmore or Weller or Buffalo Trace. If anyone is going to bring something materially fancier, let me know and so will I.
101: Drinking for cheap is nice. If you feel like eating too, though, you might or might not want to cook the very night you get in. (But I have no idea how many people are actually staying there, and like I've said grocery shopping is very convenient.)
I might join the party Friday. Not sure yet. I'll text or comments when I know.
89,98: I was the one who suggested Jack Rose. In my defense, I've only ever been there early on a weekday, and I really enjoyed getting to talk to the whiskey sommelier.
They have a guy whose sole job is to talk to people about whiskey. He had an unreal personal collection which he turned over to the owner when the place started, to use as its stock. It's crazy how much whiskey they have.
I personally am up for going to a restaurant Friday night for dinner (or eating in if people are so inclined) but I bet after dinner I'll retire to the group house. Maybe not. Who knows.
Why didn't Heebie obtain the cooking services of somebody's sister? She could have been chef for the weekend.
Very important warning:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/05/23/operation_swill_jersey_investigates_booze_fraud.html
I can contribute some moderately fancy wine for Friday/Saturday drinking (I managed to squeeze 4 bottles into my bag). I'm also up for a bottle of good whiskey if I can make it to a suitable liquor store.
I might bring some mediocre scotch, come to think. People keep on giving us liquor, and neither one of us really drinks scotch.
I do promise not to bring any liquor my mother bought at a yardsale. ("Here, try this." [hands me a shot] "What is it?" "Probably rum.")
122: If you're bringing scotch then I will bring something else like bourbon.
What's the scotch you consider mediocre?
I think it's Johnnie Walker Red? I'm not actually sure, I just have a vague sense that there are dusty bottles of scotch that no one's planning to drink on the liquor shelf.
liquor...bought at a yardsale
Hey, a money-saving way to socialize Saturday morning!
Cutting Stark. Winter is coming...for drinks.
Where does one get a nametag? They always just appear at conferences.
What is the address of the house again? And will people be there during the day on Saturday?
130: Office supply stores like Staples? Drugstores like CVS/Walgreens?
||
My dentist this morning bubbled about his new paleo diet and mentioned he had gone to a restaurant in Truckee that unexpectedly had a paleo menu.
|>
To get the addresss of the house, email heebie.
Remember! Loose lips sink parties!
Oh, I can bring name tags--three or four dozen okay?
I like cheap, too, so I'm all in favor of Friday night at the house, particularly since I'm going to be there anyway.
a paleo menu.
Painted in red ocher on the wall?
132: Somewhere on one of the highways through the west side of the Sierras (but not 80 and maybe not 50), there's a restaurant where the menu is divided into two sections: Bones and No Bones.
The latter section consisting of bananas?
Sadly I can no longer come, despite the nonrefundable tickets. Serious baby health issue, she's in the hospital until at least Monday.
139: Oh dear - hang in there, SP and baby.
Oh, no. Hope everything turns out all right.
134: yep! That'd be great. I think the headcount is ~40. Markers too?
I definitely haven't given the address to 40 people yet, but I imagine that'll trickle in.
So sorry, SP. Nia also just developed an ailment, but it's much more minor and I'll find a way to make things work.
Sorry to hear that, SP. Wishing you all well.
Ugh, sorry, SP.
I'm driving from Frederick to DC tomorrow sometime. I'll be around-ish in the afternoon, but I have some non-blog plans in the evening.
I will be available for vehicularly assisted shopping as necessary, tomorrow afternoon or whenever on Saturday, and I will also bring some booze and some markers.
Also, maybe, some big plastic serving bowls? Would that be helpful? Is the kitchen equipped or will you/we need anything else from my house?
So sorry to hear that, SP! I hope improvement happens quickly!
Best wishes, SP.
---
So if I stay up late tonight cleaning my apartment, with the flight out at midday tomorrow, will that marginally help or marginally hurt with the west-to-east jetlag?
How awful, so sorry to hear that SP. Will be thinking of your kid this weekend.
151.last: booze is the best, and only, medicine. If you're drunk the entire trip you'll never have time to adjust.
149: how about 1-2 big pots for cooking noodles/sauce, if you have? I assume the kitchen comes moderately stocked, but possibly only smaller pots.
For plates/utensils, I was hoping everyone would turn a blind eye on wasteful, bad disposable paper plates and utensils.
I don't think McMegan knows who I am. So I didn't. Plus, what's the fun of mcMegan if Sifu's not there?
So bummed to be missing this, guys! Have an amazing time! I have the first UnfoggeDCon to thank for my wonderful husband, so ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!
I can't believe you're bringing spaghetti into a sex grotto. How vile.
157: Hah. I literally three seconds ago emailed heebie, asking if she'd heard from you. It's lousy that you can't make it, though.
159 - Yeah, literally anything else I probably could (and would) have moved, but a funeral...
Ouch. Sorry about that. (And to SP as well.)
Becks:
so your hubby won't be making drinks with fire for us!?!?
155: I shall bring a big-ass pot. I only have one, though.
155/164: I have a medium one I can bring.
It's not that big but it's yellow, so that makes up for it.
SP, joining the chorus to say sorry you can't make it and I hope you child gets well quickly.
Dammit, sorry SP and Becks.
I was worried last night and this morning that I'd have to cancel for medical reasons too, but luckily things don't seem to be nearly as dire as I'd feared. But it will probably be a long time before I Google phrases my doctor uses again...
I too have a big pot (suitable for hypnotizing lobsters), but I suspcet that this event is going to be well potted.
I don't think Yggles knows who I am, either. So I did not contact him, either.
I'm probably bringing a non-blog guest to the party (the friend I'm staying with). Does he have to wear a nametag, too?
173: yes, but you get to pick his pseud.
174: Mutombo. It will be very entertaining seeing his reaction to everyone trying to sex him.
I sort of wish I could attend. Have fun, you all.
Hey! There is plenty of money in the slush fund. Please! Speak up if you could use some cash to help you attend, even if you've already purchased whatever tickets or hotel rooms, and were just planning on being stretched thin.
177: I suggest keeping a prudential reserve in the slush fund to pay for remediating damage to the VRBO, and/or settling any liability suits.
Or buying enough non-dairy creamer to destroy all the evidence.
Surely we have enough in the Idle Legal Resources Fund to get any claim dismissed.
Now I'm a bit worried about what knecht may be planning.
Hope your little feels better soon, SP.
Sorry to be missing the festivities myself. You fuckers better liveblog.
And sorry to hear you'll be missing it SP. Best to the little one.
We will miss you, SP. Hope baby is better soon.
S.P., you and the little one are in my thoughts.
Thinking of the rest of you, too. Have a great time!
I'd love to meet you all for dinner and/or drinks Friday night. If you go to a restaurant, could you leave a comment?
Sorry, SP, and best wishes for the little one.
Hope things turn out OK, SP.
I'm jealous of all you people already in DC... I get in Saturday morning.
Thinking of your baby SP, hope she's improving.
173, 174, 175: Yes, make sure you tell him that it is a mark of distinction and refinement to have a particularly absurd and embarrassing handle here, like "Monsignor Naughty Cheeks" or "Wry Cooter."
Sorry to hear about baby SP's infirmity! Good luck with everything!
Those of you who are crashing on the floor at the group house: I think it really is a hardwood floor throughout every room.
Those of you who live locally or are driving: if you have a camping mattress, I bet one of the people staying on the hardwood floor at the group house might appreciate it. (I packed a camping mattress for myself, frex.)
Following Chopper's lead: my number is 973-906-3064, I'll be in DC today around two.
(this number will self-destruct in ten days)
Oof, I wish I could just get on a train instead of going to work first.
I'm at my gate at the airport. Isn't this exciting?
HG: If you didn't see your gmail, I'm getting in tomorrow, at 3ish, sorry for any confusion.
Oh that makes sense. I'm sure someone will be at the house then, but feel free to send me a text.
192: Would airbeds be helpful? I might be able to bring some.
They're a little unwieldy for one person to bring on Metro but I can probably manage.
I'm in DC but slept very badly last night so my body is not excited about the whole travel experience right now.
Now I'm a bit worried about what knecht may be planning.
Knecht is planning on not attending, unfortunately, so you needn't worry.
Thinking good healthy thoughts for your baby and peaceful thoughts for you and your family, SP.
I am theoretically en route but at present Amtrak is late. So I'm not anywhere yet.
We seem to have 2 live comment threads on the weekend, which is a Tad unwieldy. Can we close comments on the first one and bump this to the top or something?
In the meantime, I'll repeat what I said in the other thread and on Pirate Pad: If you want to get a text message from me and/or call to find out where we are on Friday, email mypseud at geemail.
Also, M/itch and I will be at the Busboys & Poets at 5th and K Sts NW at 1 today. Closest Metro is Mt. Vernon Square.
Navigational note: The quadrant designation is D.C. addresses (NW, SW, NE, SE) is extremely important. The house is in Southeast.
Addresses written without a designation are presumed to be in Northwest.
(The quadrants divide at the Capitol.)
Working on less than one hour of sleep I've made it to my gate in time for boarding. It remains to be seen if I booked the flight to the correct city, if I can find the house, and if any of you are real.
Sorry, SP and Becks. Best wishes.
Also, stupid weather. I guess I shouldn't complain about anything other than humid and in the 90s, but it was dreary out there this morning.
209: And in doubting, prove your own existence!
I have successfully used the bike share thing! neat, but I wish they had real baskets, because this backpack is super heavy. I failed at packing light.
I got in a bike accident and scraped/bruised my left knee up fairly badly, so I'm afraid my celebrated dance moves will not be on display tomorrow.
Loose lips sink parties are the bestest parties of all.
my celebrated dance moves
I heard your Wounded Knee massacres.
Maybe he'll show off his Little Big Horn.
Or his Iroquois Confederacy! Wait, what is this game about again?
I await a report on the $22 Manhattan at the Rye Bar.
Although I guess $24 (or a handful of beads) would be the canonical amount.
218: Now, this isn't any ordinary Manhattan: It's made with Dad's Hat, a new small-batch rye whiskey from Pennsylvania,
Oh for Jesus' sake! Can people quit it with the cutesy-poo liquor names finally? What's wrong with calling it "Mihalich Rye" or "Cooper's Bristol Rye" or something like that? "Dad's Hat" sounds like Babycham for guys at the corporate sports bar. Fucking twee marketing assholes.
at hirschhorn. will attend 1230 gallery talk, then to Busboys & Poets.
The Gerhard Richter painting on the 3rd floor is really nice, same gallery as a nice Schnabel on black velvet.
I endorse the rant in 220. Not that I'm much of a wine drinker but it seemed like for a while any time I was at PJ Liquors everything had to be called "Old Yellow Dog" or worse yet, something ostensibly transgressive like "Dirty Bastard." I say either cut it out or go for broke. I look forward to a refreshing glass of Coked Up Asshole Loser Who Needs a Shower Pinot Grigio.
218: No way is that the most expensive cocktail in DC, or even the most expensive Manhattan. Go to Bourbon or Jack Rose and order a Manhattan with one of their fancier whiskeys. You can easily blow well over $30.
And, actually reading the article, I see that it says exactly that.
220: I like the Willett special bottling names. They tell you what it kind of tastes like. Sopressata! Cioccolato!
226.last: You read more of it than I did then.
At Hirschorn as well. Trapnel, I'm wearing cargo shorts and a black Rev105 t-shirt.
Also, I have had Dad's Hat. It's (a) only moderately expensive, and (b) not really all that.
230: MY HAT IS JUST FINE THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Now in lobby, for noon docent tour. Olive jacket, glasses, yellow undershirt, short.
I now have 56 name badges and will bring markers.
Olive jacket, glasses, yellow undershirt, short.
I don't think I've ever seen 'short', as a garment, in the singular. Are you wearing the short on your left or right leg?
I'm sorely tempted but I don't think I'm going to able to make it; if I do it's going to be some ill-advised car trip Saturday evening or maybe even late Saturday night.
I hope everything is OK with SP and baby.
That's from NYC area so if anyone else wants to make said ill-advised car trip with me on Saturday that might well tip the scales for me.
Is it worth heading to the house to drop off my bag, or should I hunt down Kraab and M/tch? My decision may be determined by which metro comes first.
hunt down Kraab and M/tch
The most dangerous game.
226: if you order a manhattan with a really fancy whiskey, you deserve to be soaked for as much as the bar can get out of you.
I'm at SFO! Whee!
It's yellow. They have a six stop head start, and a working knowledge of DC. Nevertheless, I feel confident.
X yr fingers that noöne is going to take this presently unoccupied middle seat.
First (but hopefully not the last!) amazing serendipity moment from this weekend -- I put up Chopper at my house last night, he got to DC at like 2 AM so I just left the door to the basement open for him and a bed made up. So when I woke up this morning there was a total stranger/invisible internet acquaintance in my house (never seen Chopper before in my life). I told my partner when we got up, hey, there's this total stranger from the internet downstairs, and she went down to offer him some coffee. Then I hear this shriek -- 'hey PGD, I went to college with this guy!'. And she did. Although he was a couple of years ahead of her she remembered him as part of the cool punk rock crowd. Apparently he had a buzz cut dyed pink in that period of his life.
245: Good. Not quite last minute *sordid* details but close enough.
244: Fingers Xed. I manage to select a seat with (at the time of checkin) an unoccupied middle seat next to it at least half the time that I fly, and yet about two-thirds of the time the seat is nonetheless occupied after boarding. (All fractions based on qualitative feeling, not careful accounting.)
Arrived at the airport, headed for B&P. Whee!
In old town Alexandria. Hoping to drop stuff off at the house shortly after 3.
Sir Kraab and I are at Busboys and Poets now. We're upstairs.
At the train station. Exciting! How weird will it be if I burst into tears?
Stanley and I are here! Haven't heard from the owner yet w the combination to get in.
Got the codes. House will be open momentarily!
Gah was about to head to B&P but now I'm tempted to go drop my stuff off first at the house.
Thanks to whomever recommended Nando's Peri-peri
Imaginary Internet friends gathered for sightseeing and revelry in our nation's capital could spare a thought for the rest of us stranded in the godforsaken provinces and allow us to participate vicariously via the flickr pool.
245 is awesome.
Yeah, I really wouldn't have guessed that PGD's partner calls him that in real life too.
This comment is coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE!
Curses, I've been foiled. There are multiple locations. You guys win this round.
Got to actually use the Mutumbo line!
Thorn and Chopper are here! Knitting and quilting are happening! And oh the witty repartee!
HMMM. I'm torn between staying at the house, so that people can drop off their stuff, and heading over and joining in the fun.
Got to actually use the Mutumbo line!
And here I thought the station architecture was the most fascinating about the Metro.
Ooh, let me know what you're doing. If you stay, I'll be there in 30 to drop my bag off.
Plane is boarding shortly, so I imagine I'll be there between 9 and 10. Possibly with a dead phone, so I hope the house will be occupied.
Ok - Stanley and I are going to go to B&P. If you need to get into the house, text me and I'll give you the lockbox code.
Is anyone likely to be at the house ~7 pm? I'd like to drop by (and drop off my big-ass pot) but work commitments have me stuck in Chantilly for a while longer.
On my way there too. Did I mention it's on my way home from work? Of course, there's a shuttle ride first, and I may or may not actually want to bike in this weather... well, anyways, I'll be going by there eventually.
To remind everyone, we're at the B&P at 5th & K.
Heebie - can you email it to me?
Oh wait, there's actually a lot of liveblogging. Great! Keep that up!
My train is just north of Richmond, Tweety. I just ate a hot dog.
Also, two fairly inebriated women (who met on the train) just traded the t-shirts they were wearing right there in the aisle.
Did you check if they're commenters?
(281 honestly did happen)
That's what the flickr pool is for, goddammit.
Seriously. I expect the doing body shots/adorable children being adorable ratio in the Flickr pool to be very different come Sunday night.
Guh, I actually did a full day's work. It was awful. Well, almost-full. In ten I'm heading to Penn Station.
In other news, it is way colder than it was this morning and I am going to be, as I often am, the guy walking around shivering because as soon as there's one warm day I get all optimistic that I will never be cold again so I packed wrong.
Did everyone bike to Busboys &Poets? All docks there were full.
289: Hrm. I should actually check the weather before packing, shouldn't I. I'll have a sweater with me I expect to finish on the train on the way there, but on the other hand I think I made a critical sizing error making it Sally's size rather than mine.
Roll Call! Currently here: Thorn, Sir Kraab, Chopper, Awl, Cyrus, teofilo, Eggplant, Trapnel, M/tch. Good times.
'Good times' sounds like a promising pseud. Is its owner living up to it?
Stanley's car has been misplaced, towed, or stolen!
Heebie give Stanley back his car.
As is traditional, we have left empty places for Wry Cooter and Matt Weiner.
I never thought this four-door civic would be so much fun to drive!
296: Those two should get together some time.
297: Please tell us more about your manifest failures of imagination.
Has anybody drunk-dialed Ogged yet?
300: Do you have his number? I'm not drunk yet but I'm willing to work on that.
As is traditional, we have left empty places for Wry Cooter and Matt Weiner
So awesome. As WC is my one contribution to the Unfogged legacy, it makes me feel like Elijah. Which would make MW Miriam, in the modern scheme of things.
I wish there were a way to like comments.
Stanley's car has been found! Ticketed. Maybe moved? Details unclear, more to follow.
You know heebie can't issue real tickets; he doesn't have to pay that. Also so mean of her to ticket him.
303: Maybe you could write, "I like that comment." But maybe that's not how they do things in China.
I'm hoping that between this place and the other place and the flickr pool (cough 'em up, motherfuckers), I will be able to attach a few faces to name by the end of the weekend. And I'm anticipating that a few faces will be attached to faces there in DC, IYKWIM.
Eggplant's explanation for sir pseud: "I was high."
Awl's: "I was drunk."
Ace's: "My mom was high and drunk."
Sir Pseud would be an ok pseud. Not great, but ok.
308 Just shorten it to SP. Oh, wait.
I meant "zir" but Siri thinks she's so smart.
Oh, benquo arrived. Also, an ascot.
I meant "zir" but Siri thinks she's it's so smart.
Anthronormativist.
Are you all still at Busboys and Poets? If so, I'm headed there now.
I assume Witt is headed there together.
You couldn't give me even a minute to make my joke?
Headed to B&P, ETA one hour or thereabouts. Fuck work.
Got to get the fuckwork out of the way, of course.
We are still at B & P, as of 4:11pm EST.
Save the fuckwork for the grotto, fucko!
322: Likely to still be there in about an hour, or are you guys wrapping up? We're ready to head in from suburbia but aren't sure where to go.
What time will people decamp B&P? We're out in VA but would join since we can't figure what out museum going is happening.
We're winding down at this venue, so if you haven't already commited to coming to B&P, better to head towards the house.
togs, let us know here or email my pseud at geemail that you got this message.
I'm at Union Market drinking beers with interpreters. See you reprobates tomorrow!
We're going to go to the metro and start moving towards the meetup house. We don't have the address as yet, so that might get tricky. Could someone text it to 571 295 9041 ? Thanks!
I'm checked in at my hotel! Are there plans for later, or is everything being played by ear?
Is there going to be dinner or something at the house, or what are people doing?
people are going out. no idea where. to be decided on the fly.
Is anyone bringing speakers? There don't seem to be any here that can be easily plugged into. With an Rca- stereo to RCA- stereo cable we could plug into the TV, but it's nothing special.
Worst case, can go to Staples tomorrow, buy something, return it Sunday. If they're open.
The air of anticipation here is a little intoxicating even at a distance!
Should be at Union Station soonish. Everyone still at the house?
Chopper is relaying the roll call from each attendee.
245: I bet your wife and I have several friends in common then.
Heading for DC now, should be there in an hour.
245-350: oh yeah, she and I have an interesting rando acquaintance too -- A.Y., my former union intern whom I never see but who keeps cropping up in odd ways. He married my drummer's ex-girlfriend, and then I was phone banking last week and I found out I was talking to an ex of his.
We're planning to get Ethiopian food on U St. at 8 pm. Let us know if you want to join us. Post here or email my pseud at gee mail.
We're planning to get Ethiopian food on U St. at 8 pm. Let us know if you want to join us. Post here or email my pseud at gee mail.
Whereabouts? I am dining shortly with my host but could join later.
I am sad that we are missing Ethiopian food. Maddie is excited for the party. She wanted us to go tonight.
I am packing and jealous and very much hoping to sleep on tomorrow's 8 am train while the boy watches the Marx Brothers. See you tomorrow night.
The 8am not-Acela? If so, we're on the same train.
We're on the 8am is-Acela. Race you!
The race is not always to the swift.
But that's the way to bet.
We're at Dukem on U Street near 11th. Du join us.
Nice work on the live blogging, and M/itch is revealing through photos that you are a bunch of sexy ass fuckfaces.
Bave and I survived the carnage on the New Jersey Turnpike and are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow (well, maybe tonight for me, if I can drag myself out of the hotel.)
I will be on a 7am not Amtrak, followed later by a not train.
Uh oh Chopper got ditched! Chopper, RAGE!
I'm suprised by how many people in the photos don't look familiar. I thought I had seen most of you in photos, if bot in person, by now.
I'ma just leave that typo for our cyborg commenters.
Lots of people live outside the 18 cities you travel to frequently, essear.
372: M/tch is leaving photos at the other place, but not at the flickr pool? Sheesh.
Only figuratively. Traffic was very slow for almost all of NJ.
Parsimon isn't attending, but is still managing to be condescending and annoying? Sheesh So just another Friday then?
LIVEBLOG LIVEBLOG M/TCH WHAT ARE YOU EATING TELL ME NOOOOOW
Slow traffic sounds like the opposite of carnage.
Hmmm...oh wait, I was actually trying to make a stupid pun! CAR-nage! Get it?
Just doing my part here to fill the liveblogging vacuum.
Ethiopian food! Delicious!
Roll call: eggplant, benquo, m/d 20/400 , lurker 1, teo, thorn, sir Kraab, M/tch, trapnel, heebie, JRobot, Witt, Chopper, YK, apo, Josh, togolosh, awl.
Oh good I was about to ask for a roll call.
There should be photos of that dinner table from more angles so I can confirm guesses about who's who, and/or remain confused about what some of you look like.
381 Lots of people live outside the 18 cities you travel to frequently, essear.
Oh come on, that's not fair, some of them are more "town" than "city".
385: Oh my god, I had no idea I was being annoying. Sorry. I just hoped to see pictures. I'm unable to attend. Have fun!
Please add to the Flickr pool for those of us not on that evil other place.
392: it is a fascinating puzzle!
Shabooya sha sha shabooya ROLL CALL!
It's hard to tell white people apart.
I strongly associate Ethiopian food with New Haven for reasons that don't entirely make sense.
There's some damn fine Ethiopian food in New Haven. At least there was last time I was there. There was even a really good Ethiopian nouvelle cuisine style restaurant in town IIRC.
Flickr is very difficult to use from a mobile device. Uploading to groups and seeing privacy is near impossible.
The flickr app is kind of neat although maybe that's what you're talking about.
Also LIVEBLOG MOTHERFUCKERS DON'T SLACK OFF NOW
Going to pick up my luggage at PGD's. Woo!
MOAR. BODY SHOTS. GET THE FUCK ON IT, WHITE PEOPLE

DO THIS THING
Going to pick up my luggage at PGD's.
Duffel bag? Samsonite? Paint us a picture, people.
Are they all going to eat sushi off apo during the party?
In DC!
It would be wrong not to eat Spam musubi off apo during the party.
413: I will admit that I was surprised by how delicious that stuff is the first time I had it.
Srsly, people, I've asked so little of you. Please make that happen for all of us.
For real. I don't even eat meat, and I want this to happen.
Remember: Whatever you do for the least among you, you do for Jesus!
Also, guys? Remember that talk we had earlier? About... yeah, exactly, about FUCKING LIVEBLOGGING!
I'm going to be going to sleep soon so I can be more likely to wake up early!
And put on your fucking nametags.
Ultimate irony: the house has no wifi. OH NOES.
Just so Jesus knows, I'm staying with him when I visit my niece and nephew, because I can't hang with the freegans. xoxo! I'm small and tidy!
And no cellular reception. I blame Obama.
424 to 422 obvs. I blame Obama all the time.
Awl helped someone parallel park only they crashed into the car behind and set off the alarm
Wait somebody like a commenter or somebody or is he just delivering random poorly-received assistance around the city like a backhanded batman?
And then he laughs uproariously and runs away? Okay, that's something. Keep it coming, people.
I totally had that parking situation covered while nosflow and toglosh stood by making snide comments. It's all their fault.
That's the stuff. Nosflow, togolosh, care to weigh in?
Turns out I am friends with McLovin at the bad place so I can see the photos. I had no idea.
Presumably there's no more liveblogging because everybody's peacefully asleep.
NOT BUYING IT.
Could this liveblogging be more lame? No, it couldn't.
Liveblogging: I'm back at my hotel. DC has way more nightlife than I'm used to.
What's the executive summary of the Batman discussion?
Please tell me that photo was posed and that you were actually having fun, even if you have to lie.
It kind of looks like they might all need a nap.
438: If it's the Batman discussion I'm thinking of, someone (Chopper?) mentioned a movie in which George Clooney was building some kind of machine in his basement.
"Batman?" said I.
Polite laughter ensued, followed by a very brief discussion of the comparative goodness and cheesiness of the Schumacher, Burton, and Adam West Batmen.
Update: I got the wifi working! It already worked for iPhones, but now it works for other things.
So we're still go for babysplosion google hangout tomorrow etc.
Now we're discussing French far-right politics.
I wish I had a normal sleep life. Bave is (I think) asleep. I am reliving "The Little Hours." La Rochefoucauld this and La Rochefoucauld that.
I am going to do the Saturday crossword and I don't care what La Rochefoucauld thinks about it.
Baby Ace can sleep through anything.
Has there been a decision on when the babyhangout will be?
I am home after dropping off Kraab and M/tch at a nearby friend's. I am so not used to staying out this late.
Ace is great.
I just woke up. It remains to be seen if I get to my train on time.
And someone just got themselves a free ride by grabbing the punched card that shows I paid. Guess I have to watch when people board.
Sitting in Penn Station, waiting to board the slow train.
There is a pigeon flying around the waiting room. They look like much larger birds indoors.
Off to the airport in just a bit! SO EXCITED for delicious and inexpensive airport terminal food!
I hope the weather reports that DC will be sunny and mild-to-warm are accurate. It's mid-forties and drizzling here.
I did not see LB at Penn Station, but did manage to board my fast train and am now en route.
I am the first awake in the grotto but am parked in, so just lucky I was able to grab my ipad during a companion's bathroom break. Other people are awake now and I think brushing teeth.
Wait, there's a grotto? No one tells me anything.
459: Aren't you just down the hall? I am not sure where everyone ended up.
There is a jacuzzi tub, which could sorta be a sex grotto given sufficient inebriation.
Trenton. Last time I was in Trenton, I was attending depositions in a prison. (And lunching afterwards in The Mates Inn, the inmate-staffed restaurant serving the prison administration.)
I am aboard a very crowded bus that is now leaving New York! ETA in DC: 1:30 pm.
There is, however, no sugar for the coffee (not a euphemism).
Trenton Mates, the world takes (depositions).
So wait catching up Thorn passed out in the tub? Wild night!
Someone did say something about tubgirl last night.
Someone did say something about tubgirl last night.
465: I am standing outside buses that should have left 30 minutes ago.
I hope the weather reports that DC will be sunny and mild-to-warm are accurate. It's mid-forties and drizzling here.
Pretty spectacular in the suburbs right now.
Clan H-Chalk is at the home of the grand matriarch. Some subset of us will be show up at the VRBO around 4.
455: It's sunny now, maybe a bit breezy, and I haven't poked my head outside but the forecast of a high of 69 looks credible. Colder than I would have expected a week ago, but I shouldn't complain about that.
Also, here's some blog fodder: Vermont passed a law against patent trolls.
Leaving my desk for more coffee.
Reading "This Is Not My Hat" for the third time. Would like to get up for more coffee.
Some of those awake are congregating in the basement to avoid waking up the others.
Witt, I'm told you were talking in meatspace about the idea of a brunch - I support that.
Don't do it, Tweety. That coffee may seem superficially attractive now, but is it really going to be there for you when you need someplace to store your office supplies?
466: There is agave syrup and pancake syrup in the cabinets.
479: Have you noticed any increased tendency to be 47 and balding?
Behind the tea, to the left of the microwave if I remember correctly.
I am more or less awake after having slept very very poorly.
479: Eastern Market is nearby, with its famous blueberry buckwheat pancakes. There are also a few other brunchy places in that area, I hear good things about Montmartre and Cafe Belga, and there's a Le Pain Quotidien.
And then there's always Busboys and Poets...
Also, I will now relate an anecdote from my walk back to the unpleasant sleeping place.
Going through part of Adams Morgan, I had fallen in behind a group of three women. We all (the women first, obviously, since I had fallen in behind them) rounded a corner and then neared a small alley next to a business. Just as the women became level with the alley, a man popped out of it pulling up his pants and fixing his belt. "Sorry, ladies!" he said, and continued on his way.
487: Busboys and Poets lacks Eastern Market's virtue of being walkable from the house. The places you mentioned are nice, as is Ted's Bulletin.
Really, what are we doing? Those people have enough help by now.
Minivet is absolutely right that a brunch place that catered to meetups called "Meatspace" would be a huge hit.
489: Yeah, that's why I mentioned it last. I mentioned it at all because we were there yesterday, it's good for big groups, and because (selfishly) it's easier for ME to get to quickly.
489: Does Ted's Bulletin have capacity for big groups? I don't remember.
"Meetspace" might be a little subtle.
I don't either, now that you mention it. Only been there once. I wouldn't be confident of getting a large group around a single table anywhere without reservations anyway, really, but people could break up into smaller tables.
We are dancing at Northside Social in Arlington at our coffee pitstop.
We are dancing at Northside Social in Arlington at our coffee pitstop.
On the shuttle from BWI to the train station!
Good morning. I haven't slept in this late in a long, long time. Holy crap I feel better.
The muck shall inherit the earth.
Tryst is good too! A lot farther from the Vrbo than Eastern Market is, though.
So the plan is to have breakout discussions at brunch and then a meet and greet event later where everyone wears nametags that use silly names as icebreakers?
Are there brown bag lunch symposia?
Or a poster session? Oh I do hope there's a poster session.
I'm only coming for they keynote.
Who's the keynote, again?
505: but very close to me!
The idea of putting "pancake syrup" in coffee makes me wish to vomit.
Also wow this computer's keyboard is godawful.
I feel like nosflow has had kind of a rough morning.
My accommodations were not to my liking. And then I was awoken at 7am. But at least that enabled me to move to slightly better accommodations. And now it's taking for-fucking-ever for my phone to charge.
We are waiting for will to show up here soonish and then will decide on brunch, sounds like preferably Ted's Bulletin but if not that then something close to it.
Also wow this computer's keyboard is godawful.
You should go knock on the neighbor's door and ask to use their computer to check Facebook.
Please liveblog who gets the Walk of Shame Breakfast Burrito.
LB, are we on the same train? Just left BWI.
510: If you can convince the others to go to Tryst I will need no convincing. It is a very nice hangout spot, like someone's huge eclectic living room.
I am leaving now and headed to the house to drop off my stuff -- will check this thread for updates on brunch location.
LB, are we on the same train?
I think this means you have to trade murder plans.
Tryst people, make your case. What would it take for us house people to get there?
If you go the Eastern Market for brunch you could eat pancakes in the huge open room where everybody could mingle. But people would have to stand in line for pancakes.
518: Very possibly -- if you see someone in a red tshirt saying Inwood as we get off, that's me.
"Inwood as we get off" is a pretty weird thing to put on a t-shirt.
saying Inwood
"Inwood in the house!"
Wait, LB, you have met emdash several times before. Why wouldn't he just look for somebody that resembled you in terms of facial features?
Tryst would be a project unless you used multiple cars. Metro transfers would be involved. I suggest Eastern Market, only partly for self interested reasons (close to me too).
Tunicliffes is also right opposite eastern market...they have a couple of big tables that could fit 8-10 each. Plus beer and strong mimosas. But the giant room at Eastern Market might be best...not enough tables/chairs and no alcohol and lots of neighborhood kids running around but good for mingling
I try not to attribute abilities I don't have myself to other people. (Actually, I might be able to pick mrh out of a crowd, but I'd never want to count on it.)
Okay, emdash and LB: after detraining head for the potted palm near the column closest to the second-to-last train car. If you see each other there, then you were on the same train.
Curses! My thin, semi-transparent pseuds are now linked!
You have to admit, finding someone in a red shirt muttering, "Inwood, Inwood," as she got off a train would be quite distinctive.
Traffic is slow. The landscape is ugly. I should have brought food.
523: Metro to McPherson Square, then take the Circulator bus to Tryst (also get off at the 18th and Columbia stop)
The Circulator is actually quite nice, it runs at least every 15 minutes, even on weekends.
Alternate routes:
Metro to Farragut West, L2 bus to Tryst (corner of 18th and Columbia
Metro to Woodley Park (involves one transfer), Circulator to Tryst
It was fun meeting people and making some introductions yesterday evening. I slept much better last night, and am very much looking forward to the party.
I know fear, slightly, that the people staying in the house will be either tired of people and socializing by 4:00 or that they will have formed some impenetrable clique -- you know, one or the other.
But everybody that I talked to yesterday was very nice.
535.--Traffic is movIng okay for me (now in Delaware, somewhere), but I am also STARVING. I hope the bus drivers have a union that mandates a rest stop somewhere with cheeseburgers.
So, wait, are people heading for brunch right now someplace near Union Station? I'm off the train, so if someone emails me the location I'll head straight there.
(Seriously though you were definitely on the same train. Wave your arms in the air so he can find you.)
I'd drop by Idle Time Books, if I were near Tryst. Capitol Hill books, if near Eastern Market. If those stores still exist.
Wherever it is we go, probably best accessible from Eastern Market station.
What is the address for Eastern Market so people can put it in their phones? It sounds like that's what the big group is doing once Witt arrives here.
I am strongly in favor of smaller people doing smaller things, so people who are close to Tryst or somewhere else could certainly do that instead. (Not that you need my permission, of course.)
Someone answer 539 before I get on the metro!
I can't believe my potted palm plan didn't work.
538: We voted against stopping. Unfortunately the vote on watching a movie has resulted in Guilt Trip playing.
I am on a bus that will go past Tryst. I will get off there IFF I hear something by then, otherwise I will continue toward Eastern Market.
Someone offered to buy my hat on the bus, after I told him I bought it for $15. I didn't want to sell it, and it was the wrong size, but took his nimber and promised to call him next time I get a good deal on a hat in his size.
Hey I'm going to start a new thread for this kind of thing.
I am strongly in favor of smaller people doing smaller things
Sizist.
550: why only one? You should start like three and then people can hop around between all of 'em!
Ok, we want the cafeteria with pancakes, apparently. I hope people will start moving toward it right now. Witt AND will are here.
Seriously, Eastern Market as a place to eat is very difficult to Google. Is it within the farmers market? Where exactly is it?
Ok, I'm heading to Eastern Market. Right?
I am strongly in favor of smaller people doing smaller things
Then you won't mind it if Smearcase and I nurture petty resentment over your saying so.
556: You haven't spotted LB? Maybe one of you went to the wrong Washington, DC.
I wrote the post, then Internet died. And everyone is ready to walk out the door. I'll post after brunch.
Last unfoggedcon my GPS tried to send us to Union Station in Denver. Are you in Denver, emdash?
OK, Butch, Buyer of Hats is off the bus and I'm continuing to Eastern Market,
The actual Market is on 7th between C and D St SE
I guess I was just too efficient getting on the Metro. Or LB is very inconspicuous and sneaky. Hopefully we'll all find each other at pancakes.
I'd drop by Idle Time Books, if I were near Tryst. Capitol Hill books, if near Eastern Market. If those stores still exist.
Idle Time Books still exists and has lots of Pogo collections for sale! Yay! I Go Pogo!
I share NickS' fear that everyone hanging out all day is not necessarily the best.
The farmers market is right outside the Eastern Market building if I remember rightly.
Will brings the fantastic food: Mrs. Yoder's extraordinary Amish donuts. Response is ecstatic. PEOPLE YOU ARE MISSING OUT.
Actually, come to think of it, last UnfoggedCon my GPS refused to acknowledge the existence of Washington, DC at all. Tia, BG, and I had to get here by dead reckoning.
565: it is. There is a cafeteria-like place to eat inside. Never eaten there myself. It's often crowded.
The browser really drains the battery on my phone. I'll check in when I arrive.
I'm in a taxi on my way to Eastern Market.
Also, you know, I just had lunchfast at Tryst (needing to give my phone time to charge at this incredibly slow pace/myself some coffee and food), and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it foodwise, though it still has a pleasing interior and was filled with young, attractive persons who were probably not all irreedemable slimes inwardly.
563 Did you try waving your arms over your head and shouting the question re Mutombo at the top of your voice? That always works.
Last night Ace was swaddled like a Baby Burrito. Today: Baby Sushi! J,Robot is doing the honors.
The Question re Mutombo doesn't get nearly as much attention among Marx's works as it deserves.
This thread is so great. I particularly like the travel updates. It is evocative of a lot of things, but right now I'm getting a "first scene of The Warriors" vibe, where all the different gangs are converging on the meeting place. There's even a Cyrus, though hopefully no one will execute him.
572: For what can one redeem the slime from one's innards?
578: stuffed animals like at the fair, maybe?
576. Mutombo remarks somewhere that all sex occurs, so to speak, twice.
Beware of attractive young persons, who come to you in summer dresses, but inwardly they are slimes with the boold of animals in their mouths.
I'm going to drop my bag before I try to find people.
I'm going to drop my bag before I try to find people.
Do not advise. Best case, your bag gets dirty; worst case, someone takes it.
I am on the Blue Line now, even though the actually convenient Metro entrance at Farraguy is closed on weekends.
Should be at Eastern Market in 15 minutes.
I am on the Blue Line now, even though the actually convenient Metro entrance at Farragut is closed on weekends.
Should be at Eastern Market in 15 minutes.
It is apparently all too easy to make the "boold" gang sign.
Can someone give me more precise coordinates within "Eastern Market"?
Actually, I just walked by a sign saying "eastern market" I will take this as a, well, sign, and look for people.
Technically not a double post, as I managed to correct my typo in between, but oops anyway.
I will be the one with a straw hat and a paisley ascot. Hopefully you all haven't transformed too much since last night.
Quick, emdash, wave your arms about!
Are people headed to Eastern Market? We are
emdash & LB. I haven't seen a sign in this thread that the crowd has moved out from the house. You may well be the first there.
Lord, I am not used to staying up late. I need some hot tea. I misread an invite to a family event. I thought it was today in Bmore. It isn't. It is tomorrow. So I may join the show already in progress. Once I wake up.
Inside the brick building? That's where I'm headed.
Meet by the potted palm in the northeast corner of the brick building.
We checked out this cafeteria place but are negative on it. Crowded, little seating. Checking out other possibilities.
Big group of us now checking two possible seated places at Eastern Mkt.
Someone who knows the destination give me a landmark to head for. I'm now in the building, in a room with people selling art and jewelry, standing by a man playing the keyboard.
It's a beautiful day out there, it turns out.
Ok people, I'm heading out even though my phone isn't fully charged (!!!). I will probably arrive at this "eastern market" place in approximately one (1) eternity.
577 really makes me want to drive down now. But with my primitive cell phone I won't be able to deliver any travel updates.
Isn't there like a whole other room full of nothing but space in the Market building?
601: if you go into the next room there should be lots of food for sale, including a big line at the place selling the "blue bucks."
I have arrived and eaten and am now at the Spy Museum.
Since I probably won't meet up with everybody until this evening, I don't imagine there will be a need for ongoing updates.
Best case, your bag gets dirty; worst case, someone takes it. it is reported as a "suspicious package", the police explode it, and you are brought in for questioning and/or hauled off to Gitmo.
New plan: we are getting food at various locations (food trucks etc) and walking back to the house to enjoy.
Is there an app that updates your GPS position to another phone or group at thirty second intervals? If not, why not?
It's about three doors down from the potted palm at Acquaint Al 2.
612 to 605 but "acquaint" should be "Acqua".
Approaching Eastern Market! We have a stroller and a cute but currently unhappy baby!
I gave up on finding anyone, decided to buy some coffee at Peregrine, and ran into Josh and Chopper.
The North Hall (normally big empty room) has way more stalls then normal. There are some open tables near exit from food stalls tho, we (me n partner n baby) are there...but very hard to ID people here...
Yeah Eastern Market is impossible...IF we all had name tags this would be easier..like a geek scavenger hunt
Where are the folks looking for someplace to sit?
Thorn, Teraz and I are goi g to town on the fresh produce. Brunch and dinner, here we come!
Buying eggs , veggies. Bacon for omelettes and such back at the house.
Anyone still in Eastern Market vicinity? Announce locations!
I am keeping a running tally of the number of people currently wandering Eastern Market trying to find people, if anybody needs it.
I just left Peregrine and am on my way back to the Market. In the absence of any other plan, I'll get on line for the pancakes.
And yummy fresh strawberries. You guys had better hope some make it back to the house.
I'm at metro center, soon to join the crowd of people trying to find each other.
If anyone is still looking for a restaurant around Eastern Market, I have a vague recollection that Cava Mezze is pretty good. It's Greek / Mediterranean food, on 8th st, two blocks south of the metro station.
Teraz and I are at the cheese counter inside.
New plan - just ran into Witt and Teraz. Going to get coffee and sugar for the house, then go back. Anyone still here who wants to join me, meet in front of the keyboardist.
The operator of this train is the best train operator.
OK I am headed back to Peregrine to get some fresh ground.
Just passed The Washington Times building, so I can't be far. God, I could eat a horse. Whole.
633: On the train?! I thought he was going back to the house.
This is why we need augmented-reality glasses. Use the private Unfogged layer and, presto!, you can pick out people in the crowd.
I'm at l'enfant plaza. You mofos better not all have left when I get there.
PGD, where are you? I've just gotten a coffee and am picking up some bread at LPQ. Witt, Teraz, please let me know if that is redundant, or if there's anything else I should pick up from Harris Teeter on my way back.
636 on the private Unfogged layer, every Unfoggetarian looks like Mutombo. Or Ogged.
I passed by a number of Harris Teeters on my trip this morning and am still not convinced they aren't some kind of bad Internet pun gone viral in the real world, like planking.
Ikea is in College Park because it is close to the agricultural college's supply of horses.
Abandoned. Cast aside. I don't mind; in fact, I'm used to it. But I wasn't expecting it from this crowd.
639: not a coffee, a POUND of coffee. And I now have a pound of bread. Walking along Pennsylvania to the Harris Teeter to pick up sugar.
I have arrived at union station!
This thread has been pretty entertaining. I'm glad I didn't head out and try to meet everyone for brunch.
Maybe I could meet JM for lunch somewhere in Capitol Hill. I'm hungry too.
649: If I understood Teraz and Witt correctly, there will be food at the house.
If I am not a liar, there will be bread and fresh coffee and sugar.
Maybe we can turn this thread into a paper on "Distributed solutions to the cat-herding problem", or something.
fresh strawberries
The local strawberries are terrific this year! And will be for the next two weeks or so, according to the woman at the local farm stand I frequent; it's due to the mild spring. (Strawberries love this cooler weather.) Advise people to pick up a pint of strawberries before they leave, if they're in a position to carry strawberries.
nosflow remember emdash and LB are also still lost in the market someplace.
I think what I'm actually going to do is wander around for a while since it's so nice out, eat at some point, then head over to the house around four. I kind of need a break from socializing.
Use the private Unfogged layer and, presto!, you can pick out people in the crowd. read the blog while driving.
654 Erdős-Bacon numbers for all the Unfoggedtariat!
JM! Lunch des refusés?
655: but they have each other.
If my gone hadn't deleted all my contacts I could contact them. (And JM, and teo.) oh well.
655 now I have that Clash song in my head.
659.2: not as far as we know they don't. They traveled parallel paths but remained unknown to each other.

Is there a constituency to go to catch a museum or something? We were thinking there might be and we would hop on the metro at 2pm and try to meet folks at one.
Breaking: I just saw someone who doesn't resemble emdash's wife very much.
Breaking! Capitol hill books still exists. No word on their Pogo stock.
I just passed through the Baltimore Harbor tunnel. My plan is to eat immediately after arriving, then a museum or walk down the mall or some other sightseeing.
We're going to leave for brunch pretty soon. I'm sitting by the potted palm in our living room.
669: much the same as one might "catch" a movie? Fair point.
Picture of the potted palm in the Flickr pool, FYI.
I guess I thought "catch" applied only to things that happen at a fixed time-- a movie, a concert, etc. Museums with static displays don't need to be "caught" because they are always there. My usage might be idiosyncratic, though.
I would love to do lunch. I'm in a square with a dude on a horse. C street and 4th?
655: no, they're with us back at the house.
Should I try to find this Eastern Market?
Yes that is likely a Bette usage, and probably the more widespread.
At what time of day do you stop calling it brunch? Also, is anyone still at or near Eastern Market?
675: that's terrible liveblogging!
I'm still at the market, JM. Make of that what you will.
Heavy traffic near Columbia, MD.
Alternately I can go down C towards fourth, looking out for a horse.
674: remember, nosflow is phonecontactless.
No, I think I've figured out where I am in relation to Eastern Market. I'm at Stanton square, and should get to you soonish.
I'm going towards this square. Will JM, too, cruelly thrust me aside like an old glove? Let's find out!
I take it all back. I remain at c and seventh, stalwart.
As long as Eqstern Market is at the train station, that is.
We're headed to the National Gallery but coming from VA and stopping for lunch, so will probably get there about 3. We're interested in the Munch and Ballet Russe exhibits and wandering around to whatever else. Let me know if anyone wants to meet us there.
Picture of the potted palm in the Flickr pool, FYI.
How are you supposed to find anyone there? It's so dark. Plus, it appears to be in a private residence.
Also in the flickr pool is a nice picture of a girl I believe to be will's daughter walking with some red-haired lady.
Wonder if the NSA spies on all the WiFi enabled buses that go by.
Because the nice street signs claim that I am at C and 7th, and I do not see you.
688 was me (with M/tch and Dill Pickles).
Google maps says the same of me. I'm across from the flea market entrance.
Exciting announcement!!!! M/tch has persuaded a special guest star to probably almost possibly definitely come. Everyone should lobby that tall redhead IFYKWIMAITYD.
Okay I will walk down 7th and hope to find a flea market.
A propos of nothing, I just learned the name of the new Italian bar (restaurant?) in my neighborhood: Vendetta.
697: That whore. I thought *I* did that.
I sent you an other-place msg with my phone #, JM
Since the self-organizing liveblogging is obviously not working at the house, I nominate emdash to start taking and posting pictures. Go!
Okay, nearing Port City Java. Neb, make yourself knoWn!
Everyone should lobby that tall redhead IFYKWIMAITYD.
I thought apo was already there.
692: We're just now walking to the Metro so may be later. We'll update once.we find a place to eat.
Never thought I'd be glad to see the Washington Times logo.
707: okay, we're heading to the metro too, so we've got a walk and a ride before we're in the vicinity.
Again, if anyone who lives nearby has decent portable speakers, might want to bring them. Or RCA-stereo to 3.5mm stereo cables. And that's the last I'll say about that.
BostonianGirl and a few others are going to the national Archives for the 1970s exhibit, then to see the national galleries for Ballet Russe
Wine can apparently substitute adequately for bitters in an Old Fashioned. Either that or I'm a pretty undiscriminating drinker.
Teraz and Thorn and JM have been put to productive work in the kitchens.

Thank goodness. Keep them busy. Who knows what they'd get up to otherwise.
Stanley's car has been found! Ticketed. Maybe moved? Details unclear, more to follow.
Don't want to leave anyone hanging. It turns out I parked in a rush-hour zone that stopped being a legal spot right around the time we pulled in. At the advice of a helpful security guard at Safeway, I was on the phone with 911 (because 311 was apparently down for the weekend or something?), and the operator was looking up whether my car had been towed when the tow truck driver drove by and said, "Looking for your car? A silver Civic?" He directed me to the legal spot on the street where he (temporarily? to give him time to come back and tow the other cars in the zone maybe?) had left it. And there it was, with two fresh DC tickets on it: one for the illegal parking job, and one for the "relocation tow".
And then I found negative two hundred dollars.

Slush fund!
I've been worried about parking issues if I come down (which is looking increasingly unlikely at this point).
Pauly Shore just showed up! He's telling us that we're the best!
Apparently Fontana Labs is Steven den Beste.
Chopper brought delicious wine.
Thorn worked hard in the kitchen.
My kid loves Unfogged people.
We escaped before Stanley showed up.
Check out the pic pool.

Josh and I are having a glass of pork.
"Fuckscene", as a participle form of "fucksaw", ought not be hyphenated.
Thanks, all, for a ton of fun!

Not if it's done right.
In other news, I woke up late and I'm not going to be making the 6 hour or so drive from NY.
725: Your limerick doesn't quite work, Will.
