I'd love to but unfortunately can't do a Tuesday night. Sure you're not still going to be around for the American Art/Zaytinya meetup a few of us have been trying to plan for the following Saturday?
Why couldn't it be a week earlier?! I'll miss you by 7 days. Bummer.
(HEB, SK)
Probably, depends a bit on when/where and how my work schedule pans out.
Tuesday is awfully tempting, but I'm probably too busy to drive up during the week. Saturday's a maybe.
I might be able to make it. What time did you have in mind?
I'll miss you by 7 days. Bummer.
yes, and I'll miss by 2 weeks in the other direction when I'm passing through.
Well, I'll be more daring than all the maybes and say "probably."
Yay to 6.2! Everybody else should come on both Tuesday and Saturday.
Pencil me in as a maybe. I'll certainly try but work may make it difficult.
I'm totally flexible as to time and place. Seems like U Street is the traditional neighborhood for meetups. I'm staying out near Braddock Road but should be in early enough to meet up wherever. My flight gets in at 4:30 pm -- barring any major weather events.
Wednesday's also possible if that's better for anyone.
I'd prefer Wednesday. Maybe Tabaq? Covered rooftop bar, nice views. I could call to verify that it's open and basically available for a group if there's consensus.
You know, Wednesday might be a safer bet given the not insignificant chance I may be delayed by weather. The guilt trip about my birthday still applies, though.
I'll be in London that week, I think I mentioned that possibility in a thread a month or so ago. Business for me but wife is coming and we're leaving the kids home with grandparents, so I'm guessing meeting internet people isn't high on her list of things to do, but any suggestions of things to do as a couple (we've forgotten how to travel like that)- restaurants, shows? Staying in Trafalgar square.
meeting internet people isn't high on her list of things to do
That's crazy talk.
Wednesday is fine for me (still a probably), and Bistro Tabac is good. The earliest I could get there is 6:30 or so.
Tabaq has closed! If there's a Saturday meet up, let me know.
Will do, 23. I'll appeal for a front-page post a week or so before.
SP, I liked Terroirs, a restaurant just off of Trafalgar Sq.
How very sad that I won't be able to make it. But rest assured that if I happened to be in D.C. I would try very hard to make a big entrance, so long as it didn't interfere with primary duties.
Is there some reason my comments aren't loading?
That's good. I would hate to think I blew my load with some of y'all, or I mean that I didn't give you each a fair shake.
but I just left a comment and it doesn't show up on the sidebar. that makes it difficult to just roll over and fall asleep.
20: Go to dinner at NOPI in Soho. Tea at Richoux (there are four locations) is good too. I've also heard good things about Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.
Heston Blumenthal
"Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty Ken Starr!"
I wouldn't suggest the doubletree as I've never actually been there.
I would suggest A&D Bar but you might get bored starting out there, and then if you start someplace else, who knows, you might want to stay.
It's probably a bad idea to start the night with two places in mind. People are going to be tired from travel and y'all might not be used to moving as a group. Someone might get left out.
I don't know why I even put that notion in your heads. Definitely don't go with two places scheduled ahead of time. Just pick a place and if it doesn't work out there, then you make an adjustment.
Especially if your legs are really tired, you might not want to be doing a lot of walking around.
Tabaq has closed!
Uh oh. Alternatives?
Bummer about Tabaq. I haven't been there but Marvin, 2007 14th NW has a heated rooftop bar, nobody on yelp complains about noise.
OK. As long as there are no earth-shattering kabooms.
So, Saturday, 2/22: How does American Art at 3:00pm, Zaytinya at 5:00pm sound? The museum's open until 7:00, so we could bump everything back a few hours, but reservations are already filling up at the restaurant, so I think earlier would be easier. We could also, of course, just do our best at the bar.
46: Works for me - waiting on my +1 to decide whether he'd like to join.
47: Great! I'll have a +1 too, if that makes any difference.
48, to paraphrase DJ Jazzy Jeff et al., I just don't understand.
That's O.K. It wasn't a very good joke.
48: To be sure I calculate tip correctly.
Sir Kraab, is the mid-week get-together going to be Tuesday or Wed?
I'm going to make a concerted effort to hit both. Saturday is a near certainty. Tuesday will depend a bit on how much of an asshole my boss is, since I need to bail from work early in order to make it (I'm working in Chantilly).
52: Sweet. Do the times in 46 work for you?
Saturday sounds great! I'll probably be by myself, although I am tempted to try to bring along [this guy I know], who apparently has a blog on the classified internet. But I don't think I will, because it's not fair that I don't get to meet his imaginary friends.
Tuesday/Wednesday -- probably I can make it.
53: I'll skip the art museum bit but make the Zaytinya portion.
54, 55: Sounds good. Let's make the times in 46 official, then.
So far, looks like we've got five near-definites plus two more possible plus-ones for Zaytinya. Anybody else?
I'm back to a maybe for Tue or Wednesday. But happy birthday.
Boring excuse: my kid's totally stressed about 7th grade tests. Can study effectively with me in the room so that instant help is available, which he uses for about 30 seconds per half-hour. I don't know his test schedule next week. He seems to be getting better about this, but that's where things are right now.
I have to withdraw my previous vote of "Saturday maybe." I forgot I'm supposed to be in Richmond early Sunday for family junk.
Alrighty, so now we're up to six near-definites (not including torrey pine's unlikely plus-one). Sorry to miss you, Stanley! What about you, lw?
I'll give this another twenty-four hours or so and then just go ahead and make a res for however many we have at that point. If others want to jump in at the last minute, I'm sure we can improvise a second table or something.
So it turns out my son and I are going to DC tomorrow and leaving Monday. Sorry to miss the local reprobates.
I'll try to make it to at least one.
For the Museum of American Art, the Folk and Visionary collection is a must-see. In particular The Throne of the Third Heavens . I almost feel bad posting a link to a photo of it because the piece is such a stunner when you come across it with no warning.
Sorry to miss you too, Blandings.
And yes, come, PGD! Thanks for the link!
I would sure like to come. I will check and see if I can for either date.
I'm thinking I could do the 22nd, but not the 18th. More's the pity.
65- me too. Not positive, but currently I'd say 85% yes. Not for the walking, but for the sitting around drinking.
65.1, 66: Hooray! That makes us eight and counting...
I can do the 18th/19th (is it Tuesday or Wednesday?) and the 22nd, with the times in 46 (Museum@3, Zaytinya@5). +1 on Saturday.
Awesome, Benquo. Now we're up to ten...
Okay! Reservation made for ten at Zaytinya on Saturday, 2/22, at 4:45pm (I couldn't go any later with that number of people.) If others want to join in, by all means, the more the merrier--just say so here, and we can either reserve another table or rotate in and out between this table and the bar.
Also, if anyone wants to join me and Stranded #2 a few minutes earlier at American Art, just let us know, as we're thinking of getting at least some kind of a head start. Otherwise, expect to find us outside the main entrance at 3:00pm with our ears primed and ready for propositions from Mutombo.
Since this is a meet-up thread, I'll say that on Friday night I'll be in the south Bay Area without much to do, and without a car. Maybe I'll try to delay a tech company bus full of people returning to SF.
By, like, throwing yourself in front of it, or what?
By being disruptive, of course. How to do it is something that I find, as an innovator, to be a bit of a dilemma. Maybe I'll walk up to an open door and lean in and then refuse to leave.
43: So Marvin @ 7?
Is still happening this tonight? Or tomorrow night?
In appropriate order those words put.
I had thought Wednesday. But I am not sure. Kraab?
I thought it was today. We need an executive ruling on this.
I sent up the Sir Kraab signal via FB.
Let me be the first to wish Kraaby the happiest of birthdays.
If we're meeting at Marvin @ 7 pm I need to roll out of here in half an hour. I'm working on the assumption that we are on for tonight. Will check in before I go.
Hm, I was working on the opposite assumption. Per 19, I assumed Sir Kraab might be on a plane & tomorrow was a better bet?
Happy birthday, Sir Kraab.
Ah. In that case I'll hold off until I get confirmation.
I was hoping to wish Krabbie a happy birthday in person, but just in case, have a virtual balloon from me on your B-day, Sir K!
85.1 was my read of 19 as well, and I was planning on trying to make it tomorrow. If it is in fact tonight, will also try to stop by on my way home, but would be on the late side. Happy birthday SK!
Since zero hour is rapidly approaching I think tomorrow it is. Looking forward to seeing you all.
Happy birthday Kraab.
Also, damn. A couple weeks ago I said I'd probably be at the meetup, but I forgot about it until this got bumped back up to the front page this afternoon. So if it had been today, I definitely wouldn't have been there, and tomorrow also looks like a probably not. Saturday, though, maybe. I suck at keeping up with the blog.
As for advice for out-of-towners on things to do in DC at the moment, the National Portrait Gallery has an exhibit right now about cool people.
Definitely come on Saturday if you can, Cyrus. 70 has the updated details.
Sorry for the confusion everybody and for my AWOLness. See you tonight I hope.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes!
If anyone want my phone number, email me at mypseud at geemail.
l feel like I should apologize again for not checking this thread yesterday. Sorry for not checking this thread yesterday.
Can't make it tonight but happy b-day Sir Kraab!
I'm at Marvin early, sitting at the downstairs bar. We'll move upstairs when a few people gather.
Thanks, bill!
headed in. eta about 20 to 25 minutes.
Running a little late, hope to be there in half an hr or so.
We're upstairs now, close to the door.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be there. Feeling under the weather today, so I took a day of leave.
Togolosh got into a big fight. Pummeled other guy. Got hauled off.
They have a cocktail called the "Empty Promise."
the bread has arrived! the food here looks awesome. can't wait to nosh.
Woooooo liveblogging
Very meetup. Such liveblog. Wow.
potchkeh is at his very first meetup!!!
Happy birthday, Sir Kraab! Hooray for liveblogging.
Oh, and Happy Birthday, Sir K. Something something palanquin something.
can't wait to nosh.
I'm hoping 105 is still true and you mean "I can't wait to nosh on some dude's bloodied face."
And happy birthday, SirK. I hope Togolosh is gentleman enough to offer you some of the human ear he is doubtlessly chewing right now.
winding down. Working out the check while everyone is buzzed is fun.
I'll take 118 as a non-denial denial of feasting on human flesh.
I'd missed that it was Sir K's birthday. Happy Birthday.
Very glad to have finally made a meetup, though it was disappointing to be the only plausibly 47-year-old bald guy there.
Robbing the place. Hoping that witnesses would get confused by similar-looking people isn't a very good plan anyway.
Oh, attending. Not that it did. I vaguely thought about age differences within and among the commentariat here, and your "disappointed" recalled for me that I register myself as among the older of the females at this blog. That's all. No biggie. I'm just kind of sleepy and tired right now.
118: Speak for yourself. I always tip 48.3%. Totally routine, nothing to see here.
ydnew, did you send me the photo? I don't see it. mypseud at geemail Thanks!
126: Because you're bad at math a feminist.
127: I had, but it was stuck in outgoing mail. Resent now that I'm on my home network. I have 6 with no flash, too, if you'd like to see your handiwork.
That was a great time! Although I am a little sad that apparently I will never really like gnocchi, even when it is done really well.
(Also, hooray for Sir Kraab's lurker friend who showed up!)
Hey, all. Just thought I'd pipe up before this post drops away entirely to say that Saturday's DC meetup is still on and the details in 70 are still current: 3:00pm for American Art and 4:45pm for Zaytinya. There are at least two obvious entrances to American Art, so let's meet at the south one (F and 8th), just to keep things simple.
Looking forward to it!
I have been fainting 1-2 times per day the last few days. So no driving to DC for me. :( :( :( Next time!
Sorry you can't make it, Messily. Also I hope the fainting stops and you feel better.
Yikes, sorry to hear that, E. Messily. Also, quit it!
You're not my real mom, you can't make me.
(thanks. It is pretty annoying! I am getting a little beat up from all the falling down.)
Ha! If there were an emoticon that simultaneously expressed happy- and sad-face without splitting the difference, this'd be where I'd put it.
Yikes, Messily! Are your doctors going to make this problem go away? If not, why not?
Stranded, I'll try to meet you at 3pm at American Art. (I'm hoping to see the thing linked in 62.)
I'm metroing in, so might (read: almost certainly) be late for American Art. But 100% for restaurant evolution.
I'm metroing in, so might (read: almost certainly) be late for American Art. But 100% for restaurant evolution.
140.2, 141: Sounds good!
The Strandeds will be internet-less as of a few minutes from now, so see everyone at either 3:00 or 4:45!
Note that red line is almost always delayed due to construction on the weekends these days, and, less usually, the blue and orange lines are too. Budget in a little extra time if you're using those at all, and a lot more time if you're coming from north of Shady Grove on the red line or east of Eastern Market on the blue or orange line.
I am here on the steps of the south entrance.
So, we're congregated on the front steps (left side as you face the entrance) but thinking of heading in. Torrey pine, we'll give you ten more minutes and then head inside.
149: Maybe if you threatened to kill a dog rather than just enter the museum it would be more effective.
Turgid Jacobian has joined, and we're inside looking at a very large art piece made of tinfoil. Benquo made a (loud) last call for and straggling folks wanting to sex Mutumbo. And, torrey pine has found us.
I skipped the museum. I'll join the mob at Zaytinya's, though.
Headed to Zaytinya, passed a baby wearing jeggings.
Count so far:
Stranded in Lubbock
The Lubbock Strander
Me +1
Ydnew +1
Cyrus
Torrey Pine
Turgid Jacobian
Togolosh
Nice that we have liveblogging for the first meetup to practice cannibalism.
Wish I could be there with you guys--and Messily, hope you feel better soon!
the food is delicious. especially eggplant.
Torrey Pine, Ydnew+1 and the Lubbocks are headed home. (Losers.) Togolosh, I, and my +1 are headed to Hogo.
7th just north of NY Ave. Under the Ruppert's sign.
When you walk in there's a painting of "Bill Murray" that looks like Hamid Karzai.
Apparently it is National Margarita Day.
Nice meetup, folks! Thanks!
We were talking about that story of the wOman earning gobs of money for writing Bigfoot porn.
Conversation was: if Bigfoot is basically US-only, how can the market support that?! Though there are other monsters, or crypozoological creatures. I couldn't come up with any, but guess that unicorns and chupacabras and jackalopes could be.
Oh, god. We're the Lubbocks now. I should have known this would happen.
Also, yes: thanks, everyone, for coming out. That was fun (for everyone except L'Aubergine).
173: Judge for yourself, it's in the Flickr pool.
Oh, sorry, you said "what", not "where." It's a rum bar by the same guy who does The Passenger, Tom Brown, but it's newer & less packed on a Friday or Saturday night. This might be a disadvantage if you're looking to sleep with someone other than the one that brung you, but it's an advantage if you're a group looking for a table with no wait at a place that makes great drinks.
I was actually referring to the margarita thing. I could go either way on the painting.
But National Margarita Day is documented in the Flickr pool too.
E Messily, I hope you're better soon. I can't imagine fainting a couple times a day.
J, Robot, come next time! We'll probably try to do it again before Stranded and his wife leave DC.
Thanks for coordinating, Stranded.
Thanks guys! I'm very sad I missed it.
We missed you too. Maybe you can get better soon?
The Bigfoot porn came up in a conversation about writing fan fiction. There was some context that led to this, it didn't just come out of nowhere! And we ordered lots of other dishes too, it wasn't all roasted eggplant.
180: I wouldn't advise putting too much effort into finding a logical and coherent interpretation of 173.
Anyway, if anyone else is passing through DC, don't let the cannibalism and depravity discourage you from trying to meet up!
Cannibalism goes well with Northern charm and Southern efficiency.
Agreed. Though next time lets go to a dc united game or something.
188: I don't know about Northern Charm, but I'd be happy to go to the next meetup at Southern Efficiency.
Idea! Everyone should travel two hours north and meet me in DE instead!
That was a great night, everyone was great as always, let's do it again soon.
169, 178: Oh, I wasn't complaining, I was just curious. I had never heard of the place.
We had a good time. Sorry we didn't stay longer.
