Hooray! I currently have no plans whatsoever, nor do I know enough about the area to make a decent suggestion. Help?
I recommend an establishment that serves alcohol.
A tennis court that exists solely as the setup for a joke I can't quite figure the punchline to?
2: The only places I know about are Deep Ellum and the bar at the Omni Parker House.
Good god, man, RTFA. Lord Hobo? Back Bar? Meadhall? Charlie's? Sifu's bedroom?
I forgot Cuchi Cuchi. We could do a bar crawl to every place there's ever been a meetup.
Drink was fairly successful because we got there at the right time of day on a non-busy day of the week, I think.
Sifu & Blume have a new bedroom now. Inaugural meet up there?
I bet they probably want to do that in private.
I've been thinking we should get up to Boston some weekend for a meetup. But not this one, because Josh. Also because we're flying to Spain on the 22nd.
8,9: One would hope that would have already happened.
10: I'm wounded.
I figured VW couldn't plausibly pretend to entertain attending.
BTW, we're seeing Barça at Camp Nou while we're there.
BAAAAACK BAAAAAAR
I really like that place.
BTW, we're seeing Barça at Camp Nou while we're there.
Sweet! Make sure you get there early so you can see Messi and Alves warm up.
Backbar is great and pretty handy to whichever of Blume and I wins the lottery to go (assuming it's a nighttime thing). The other option is a not-night thing at a place (not Backbar) where people can trail massive clouds of small children behind them. (The Independent, next to Backbar, would be okay for this). Only other thing with Backbar is that weekend nights it's pretty hoppin'. But it is the best.
Then maybe we should start at the Independent in the afternoon, and whoever is still standing can stagger on to Backbar, should they wish to do so.
17 sounds good. 6 sounds kind of hilarious.
So, to violate the sanctity of off-blog communication, Bave and Smearcase were both extremely enthusiastic about Backbar and apparently I should have a drink there that tastes like Pine-Sol. So 17 sounds great to me.
Bave and Smearcase were both extremely enthusiastic about Backbar and apparently I should have a drink there that tastes like Pine-Sol.
Have you considered the possibility that they don't have your best interests at heart?
a drink there that tastes like Pine-Sol
Wondering if this was something with Zirbenz?
We should make them tell us. Bave! Smearcase! What drink was it?
Smearcase! To the cocktail helicopter!
My theory is that if I keep this thread in the sidebar eventually somebody will pick a date and time (Saturday 4PM?)
I think it was called The Partial Rescue.
No, I don't remember. I just tried somebody else's. I just like inventing cocktail names.
I also like the word "just."
It must have been something with zirbenz.
You and Bave liked it. I was all "that's really interesting and I'm glad I didn't order it." But the good thing about BackBar is the bartenders will appraise you of a cocktail's weirdness level.
Is Backbar the place we went when I was in Boston for the APA?
I think that was Drink, neb.
The cocktail was the Oregon Trail, I think. I don't think Smearcase liked it, but I did.
A lot of disclaimers in there about thinking.
You are now at Drink. Would you like to look around? ▒
Date: March 22, 2014
Weather: cool
Health: fair
Food: 0 pounds
Next Bar: .2 miles
Miles Traveled: 1.4 miles
Ooh, yes. The Oregon Trail was a tasty one. I feel like it required some infusion they may not have all the time?
We will have to take you to Backbar next time, neb. I like it better than Drink.
To early for this, but: what's Marlborough MA like? Nice place to live?
Pretty, exurban. Nice place to ride a bike. That's all I know about it.
Close enough to come in for meetups? Conceivable to have friends in the city, or stuck in exurban purgatory?
I have friends there. They were in the city pretty often on weekends and willing to meet the BF and me when we've passed through. Their new baby has definitely put a crimp in that, though.
You would definitely be driving in -- it's probably 45 minutes or so from town under normal conditions, and not terribly near the commuter rail. I... do not make it out that way at all unless I'm on a long bike ride, I'll put it that way. Lots of working farms and such out there. But really lovely countryside, and certainly lots of people commute from that far out, so it's not like State College or something.
There's an enormous hockey facility out there with like six rinks all in the same building.
I can't come up to Boston that weekend but you guys should all come down to Providence instead and we can meet at The Eddy or The Avery or possibly Cook and Brown.
I should be in for wherever, whenever.
It's now looking like I can make this. I was going to be out of town but had to cancel the trip. I assume the places being proposed have some nearness to transit? I don't think I'll drive all the way into the city.
Heeeey meetup thread. We should get this bumped at some point, since it is lost in the woods now. Anyhow: Union, which is where the Independent and Backbar is, is not the closest place to the train, but is a very quick bus ride from Kendall, Lechmere or Harvard.
Date and time, I'm willing to just let nosflow pick for us, but whatever people think.
Since I haven't been to Boston since 1990, I'll probably go sightsee or something beforehand, so any time probably would work for me. I guess I could look at maps and transit info.
So Saturday at 2:30 then, starting at the Independent and progressing to Backbar?
How late are we talking about progressing? I can't come until kids are in bed.
54: I can guarantee I'll be around until whatever time you get there, and based on 16 I'm guessing one of Tweety and Blume will be too. Can't speak for anyone else.
Yay, I can go. I am still in training and not yet working Saturdays.
Do you still need a reservation for BackBar?
Given my chronic lateness, I may not be there at 2:30 but I can probably stay until whenever. Or at least until my chronic sobriety becomes too much of a drag.
We also don't have to take nosflow's plan as gospel; we could start a bit later if that's better for people.
I probably can't get there until about 3:30, but yay meetup!
My kid has his first ever official baseball team practice that afternoon a couple blocks from Hobo.
Look for me around 3 or 3:30. Looking forward to seeing all of you reprobates again.
Is there parking near the bar(s)? Now that I've looked at maps I wonder if I should just try to park in that area, since I'll be leaving from there.
There is a small parking lot basically in front of the bar(s), but getting space in it is hard. Not sure I'd recommend it as an approach.
I'm also have the post-bedtime constraint, so I will be checking in to see if things are still going on at 8pm or so.
Maybe I'll stick with my original plan and park somewhere like Alewife, which seems like what random internet message board people recommend.
3:30 at the Independent in Inman?
64: There is parking at Braintree also, if it's closer to your route into town.
The cheapskate in me likes the idea of apparently no tolls. Google's current estimate says both stations would take about the same time, but Saturday morning traffic may be different. Internet consensus seems to be that you do not drive on 95 if you don't have to.
3:30 at the Independent, but it's in Union, not Inman.
67: Yes, there would be no toll on 95. I have not driven them enough to know which would have less traffic on Saturday. The wait for the train will be a little shorter at Alewife.
Internet consensus seems to be that you do not drive on 95 if you don't have to.
Of course not, you drive on 128.
Shit is gonna get CRAZY in 3 hours! Where by "crazy" I mean "we will be at the Independent with the baby". Off the heezer!
Somehow I parked at the Quincy Adams garage without realizing it.
like, the garage for the Quincy Adams stop? That will certainly work just as well.
Driving while blackout drunk is probably not a good idea, even in Boston.
73: Yes, turned out far better than fighting traffic to Braintree. I just followed signs saying "MBTA garage."
Nobody expects the Quincy Adams garage. Or its pronunciation.
Woo little league practice is so exciting.
78: pretend you're running to shag a long foul and jog to the meetup for a couple beers.
Hobo is in the wrong direction. Just wait until a lefty kid with a ton of power pulls it; that road that runs along the first base line goes right to the bar.
We are heading down. If people beat us there, te restaurant side might've better a/f/a tables that will handle a high chair.
My guess is I'll get there around 4. I think I know where there is.

Getting kinda sick of having world-renowned musicians rehearsing while I'm trying to work.

Josh, Blume, fake accent, Zardoz and I are here.
mcmc and Kreskin are here. Zardoz is eating pickles.
I'm home with three kids that I considered bringing but toddler is at an impossible age to take her out places.
Knecht has made a surprise appearance! Most people are limiting their alcohol consumption to be prepared for backbar, but Blume and I have no such compunction.
Blume, Zardoz and I are leaving. Somebody else will have to pick up the liveblogging.
We're finishing up at the Independent and are about to head over to Backbar.
It looks like the remaining attendees have really been falling down on the liveblogging.
Backbar is definitely living up to its reputation. I think I'm about to order an Oregon Trail; reporting to come on whether or not I've been pranked.
Need to decide if I should bike, T, cab, or drive.
So, Josh, have you been pranked or does it taste like Pine-Sol in a good way?
At Backbar! No Oregon Trail has yet been ordered.
The drink I just got had burning tea leaves in it.
That definitely sounds more tempting than Pine-Sol.
The correct answer is apparently covered wagon. Leaving now.
There was wide agreement that it was interesting, and then the remainder got passed off on me.
The drink I just got had burning tea leaves in it.
Burning on the surface of the liquid, or submerged?
Not going to make it tonight, sadly. Hope everyone is having a good time!
Hooray for Backbar. I'm significantly closer than I was 12 hours ago but still a few hundred miles away from being able to attend.
113: they brought an upside down glass over a plate with burning things on it, and then poured the rest of it into the now-upended glass full of smoke.
Heh. It's looking like I won't get home until after midnight. I guess I could decide "fuck it, I've already been awake for 30-odd hours, why not go have some drinks?", but I think that would be ill-advised.
I thought I would sleep on the plane but the screaming baby a few seats away and the person behind me poking their video display and, by extension, the back of my head had other ideas.

we're onto Numberwang! now.
Wow, I'm pwned by 3 whole days! I should travel less so I don't fall behind on the threads here.
You know the worst thing about the Numberwang version? If you watch the colors, not the numerals, it's playable.
123: Crossing the international dateline enough might give you some sort of pwning cushion, really.
125 Pwned by my own pwning?
124 Curse you LB!
Did anyone remember to make a bad joke about "Numberwang"? I never noticed the term until now.
We are talking about ttaM's shoes.
I'm actually playing the Doge version and finding it more soothing, except the smallest winking Doge. I'm not sure what this says about me, but it can't be good.
I got up to the second rainbow doge, and I think one past that.
I just made a pan of maple brittle with bacon. see if it came out tomorrow. have to get a candy thermometer though. standing there anxiously performing drop test every couple of minutes for an hour was lesd fun than I was hoping to have
I said this in the other place, but Lee had bought some gouda with bacon in it, which was pretty awesome but not appropriate for having my Catholic dad over to watch basketball Friday, and then Mara decided it would be even better with a pickle spear on the side and it so totally was. It's possible this is because it's as close to a full meal as I've gotten since I got sick Thursday, but still I'm pretty sure it was great and that it's not going to translate as well to bacon maple brittle.
We are revealing the real names of all people not at the meetup.
I thought I was getting a regular pickle today but it turned out to be some kind of sweetened pickle. It was like a candied cucumber. Stores should really put a big warning on the shelves: Not a real pickle.
Original Numberwang Skit, FWIW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjOZtWZ56lc
132: so no pickles should be added to the brittle?
136: Maybe stick to sweetened candied cucumber.
(Someone needs to make me go to bed, but I don't wanna.)
Play more doge, I got up to the derp doge. I kinda suck at doge.
Did you know that ttaM is really Matt, and ydnew is Wendy, and werdna is Andrew? Shocking!
We are trying to pay. It is not going terribly well.
Oh, dude, SP. Now this meetup will live in infamy.
And Barry is really Yrrab, right?
139: Sounds like shit got real for real.
139: I don't even want to speculate about neb.
It turns out it takes United an hour to change a lightbulb.
Yaaay late night drive coming up. Everyone else is sober too, right?
I biked home without much difficulty. The burrito place's kitchen was closed despite its Yelp indicated hours. The other Mexican place had a band so we avoided it.
Re: 128
And the excellence thereof?
151: yes. Specifically how much better your shoes are than mine.
Which they actually might not be, in the full light of day. They're quite similar.
Wait, it's still going to snow in Boston this week? And I still have a congested head from the spring pollen on the other side of the planet.
Good to see everyone yesterday! Thanks to Josh for suggesting it.
The maple bacon brittle came out like gangbusters. Really good. Rich as anything though.
There's an El Bulli exhibit at the museum of science.
