I thought this one was funny:

I thought left shark was amazing, until I studied that gif and came to appreciate right surf board.
Just the name "Left Shark" is for some reason hilarious. I haven't read any of the memes yet and I didn't watch the source material except a tiny clip later on.
You would prefer "Stage Right Shark"?
I don't really get the Left Shark thing, but I noted that the postmodern orgy of references in the link failed to include Land Shark.
6: I had that question! Like, which one is supposed to be funny, the one on my left or the one on stage left?
8: Either way I feel bad for the other one. You were both great, sharkies!
I'm kind of surprised that nobody is mentioning that Perry's boob cups are half beach balls. That's weird!
I think H-G's musing in the OP is golden. The detail I'd add is that, in an inside joke situation, you don't necessarily get the best jokes, but you do get A. humor with a shared POV* and B. that warmth of recognition; that is, the joke (on the 20th variation) brings back memories of the first time, and how you were with this group that you like, etc.
Meme humor makes up for not having A or B** by having billions of people riffing on the joke, which means you'll tend to get jokes that are funnier in absolute terms than you'd get with just 5 friends passing it around.
*that's the essence of the insiderness - you're all part of this group, so you'll share a sense of humor, and a set of references, etc.
**although some of B does pertain - Left Shark memes remind us of being at that SB party where we noticed and started laughing at it/him - but it's not as pure a hit of nostalgia (or whatever emotion I'm getting at)

I'll give you weird, but on a list of weird things relating to Perry's halftime show, does that even crack the top ten?

I'm not going to click that right now because I'm at work, but I assume Russel Brand is on the list near the top.
I'm gobsmacked that anyone noticed anything much at all. "Katy Perry's choreographer from Grand Rapids* says 'Left Shark' nailed it at Super Bowl".
"The sharks were given two main objectives," Durrell told The Hollywood Reporter. "One, perform Katy's trademark moves to the 'Teenage Dream' chorus, which they both did perfectly; and two, to have loads of fun, and bring to life these characters in a cartoon manner, giving them a Tweedledee/Tweedledum-type persona."...
"Clearly, that was portrayed with the overzealous shark on the right hitting precise dance moves," Durell said, "while the left shark was playing up the more goofy, fun-spirited, sports-fan mascot type, who was just happy to be at the Super Bowl."*Report is from the website of the Grand Rapids paper.
Am I the only person who thinks that Left Shark wasn't doing anything all that off other than not being exactly sure how demonstrative to be with the giant shark flippers? Same dance, just not sure how to do it well in costume.
Yeah, OK, I clearly underestimated just how many weird things she's put on her boobs.
That said, I think the beach balls beat at least 1/3 of the things on that list
Either way I feel bad for the other one. You were both great, sharkies!
No, they were not both great. Right Shark did their fucking job. Left Shark screwed the pooch and got all the glory.
Left Shark screwed the pooch and got all the glory.
Let that be a lesson to all of us.
I do now want to be one of those sharks for Halloween.
I thought Katy Perry was supposed to be an employee of hot dog on a stick with that costume.
13: The Elmo shirt was clearly the best.
