That Tuesday might be out for me, and possibly parts of the weekend, but I'm likely to be available.
I am probably available on one or several of those days.
Though now that I actually think of it I think the only days I'm really available are that Sunday and Monday. Or Tuesday, if it's an inclusive range.
I could do a 3/18 meetup in LA. WHO IS WITH ME.
This is starting to feel like the time I tried the WHO IS WITH ME for the armed uprising.
I am available most of this period, I think.
Let's just have one meetup, in central California somewhere. Kettleman City?
I think a good Central CA place would be CoalingA. Meet, refuel, go.
I am up for the 18th in LA. Or other dates too.
3. The range is inclusive. I go back to DC on the 25th. I hope it is warmer than a month ago.
I figure for SF that the Oakland/Berkeley side makes more sense given where people live.
18th not impossible but it's a crazycakes week all of a sudden. Where are you staying, md?
Culver City. I can get a bunch of places in a reasonable time (rush hour being an exception) using the freeways and the major boulevards.
Hey, I'm actually in SF right now and such a reprobate I didn't even think of trying to organise an Unfogged meetup. Could probably do something on the 19th if it is accessible by public transport from SF (my last day in SF), or if anyone wants to do something tomorrow evening that works for me as well.
Culver City is great for me. What kind of venue do you prefer? What are your feelings re dive bars?
There are some good newish beer-garden spaces in Uptown Oakland near BART - I'm thinking in particular of Lost & Found.
I am so confused. How can something around the corner from the 19th St. station be in "uptown"? Apparently every neighborhood in Oakland has been renamed and no one told me.
That neighborhood has been the location of the bar The Uptown for a long time.
It might be small-d downtown in effect, but it's certainly part of Uptown as defined. If you must blame someone, maybe Jerry Brown.
Uptown Jerry Brown
baddest mayor of old Oak-town
15: but now that that place is out of business...
He's no Horace Carpentier hogging up the waterfront, that's for sure.
I believe he lives on Skyline, which is up in a different way.
I appear to be free, though my wife is threatening to make her own conflicting plans in the relevant period. Anywhere near BART is fine.
Being a reprobate I have had little online access and was doing a bunch of stuff with family all weekend as promised. Today ( a teacher training day) was spent at Universal Studios. I am a tourist.
For LA, It looks like TRO is the only one able to attend. So, we'll met in the 18th at a dive bar of his recommendation. What do you recommend? Lurkers welcome. (I no longer drink, but such bars can be great.) If Josh or Biohazard, etc. can attend, we might adjust.
For SF, the consensus date looks like Monday. The area Uptown Oakland. Maybe Lost & Found or similar.
I believe he lives on Skyline, which is up in a different way.
Wait, really? He used to live in the Sears Lofts over on 27th.
Hmm. I like Oldfield's Liquor Room, the Backstage, and the Cinema Bar in Culver City. All of these are real bars though, the last two are pretty extreme dives. There are also plenty of less booze-focused places for an Unfogged date or a group meetup.
I have heard good things about the Cinema Bar. Let's tentatively set on that. If Josh can make, I am willing to shift to somewhere a bit closer to Sliver Lake.
Tomorrow I'll got to LACMA (probably ride a bicycle) and if Biohazard hasn't spoken up here, I'll reach out to him for a luncheon meet.
TRO, I am going to have to bail on tonight. Turns out family had made plans for the last night of this visit.
It's just that Jigga Man, Pimp C, and BUNP
24: Yep. Just missed a mudslide in 2008.
Monday, Lost & Found - what time? 7?
I should be able to make it, but probably be there around 8 because traffic.
Not Lost & Found: they're closed on Mondays. Plum Bar or Make Westing should be decent backups, though. Or Telegraph, if the weather's nice enough to sit outside.
I vote Make Westing, which, I note, will supply one with Brillat-Savarin in exchange for money.
Telegraph also has a good deal of outdoor seating, and really, what's the likelihood the weather is not good Monday? Make Westing also good, of course.
(Hubris rarely has meteorological consequences around here.)
Thank to neb. I will go to any of those places. If the weather is good, outdoors would be nice. But, I trust those with local knowledge. Y'all say where and I'll be there.
I went to the de Young today and then to Land's End. Real nice. I drove by the French school and said, "aha!".
Aha, md! *Which* French school? (there are several ...)
I'm unlikely to be able to make it as next week is looking fairly demented, have a lovely time!
What time is this rumpus getting going?
The French school was the Lycée Français de San Francisco on 19th Avenue. The two languages in the name produced a momentary incongruence. Usually I don't read San Francisco as being Spanish. There, I did.
Suggesting a time: 7:30. I know it is a work night so if folks want to do earlier that will work too.
A place: Telegraph or Mae Westing. The forecast says it will be dry but in the high 50s.
I'm basically repeating some stuff that's been said above.
I guess south bay living had made me soft, but I'd prefer not to sit outside in the 50s. This doesn't mean we can't still go to a place with outside seating, or ignore my preference altogether.
Yeah, I'm wearing shorts and flip flops today and it isn't working. I feel chilly.
<passive-aggressive>I guess I'll get place and time info for the meetup while I'm on BART</passive-aggressive>

Did I miss an announcement that there's no more gum-chewing to Lee Kuan Yew?
|>
Oh, wait, I guess that news just came out. Stupid IDL.
Not to mention Francisco Franco.
49: You knew he was dead before the official announcement? That means you are either his doctor... or his killer.
53: I caught him with heroin, man. Rules are rules.
Make Westing @ 7:30 seems good to me.
Make Westing @ 7:30 it is.
1741 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94612
I can't make it. Sorry to miss your visit, md.
I'll probably be there at between 8-8:30.
Guess who feels super shitty and should probably stay home? That's right, me.
Sorry to miss you md! Too many evening commitments this week, reserving tonight for a roast chicken dinner at home, hope you find something equally delicious to eat with charming companions!
Just getting over an unexpected migraine, won't be able to come - sorry.
If I hadn't just come in from a run (a run through the snow), I'd go to the bar myself and have the California meetup in Pittsburgh.
I'm having a California meetup in Pittsburgh in my bed in Boston.
I guess someone will have checked in by the time I reach the BART station, so if it's canceled I won't have gone too far.
I'm planning to go. Leaving for BART now. If nobody else RSVPs before I get to Market St, I might bail. (Is that incredibly not-game of me?) md, are you going to be there?
And, maybe more to the point, hasn't said he won't.
All right, you suckers, don't make a sap out of me.
Protip: If you think of it more as a gathering of powerful warlords to divide up territory and less as having a beer with internet acquaintances, it is more fun. NOW THAT THE CLANS HAVE DIVIDED THE COMMENT SECTION, LET THEM DRINK!
But remember -- the bonds of the cartel won't be sealed unless you take the blood of a stranger.
That's what happened at the last London meetup, by the way, and why everyone involved is still in hiding. Good work guys..
I just arrived. I don't recognize anyone so perhaps I am first?
Finally made it to BART. It might have been better for me to go via SF.
Still on my way. But I'll be joining the non-liveblog crowd soon.
fa is here! md is wandering the Easy, like Caine on Kung Fu.
Who's there?
And for a meetup that almost didn't happen this is better liveblogging than the last knifecrime island meetup.
Excellent! Now, take out a stranger! Bond of blood!!
We're talking about the toxicity of various Bay Area locales. We'll all be dead soon.
Now talking about SF neighborhoods. And the Cow Palace.
Yawnoc and fa are currently arguing about the morality of mirroring Google Code.
I never said mirror. Just an unspecified form of long-term preservation.
... an argument I won by analogy to the FOAA.
BTW, I don't understand what "the copyright on Mickey Mouse" is supposed to be, exactly, and there were no IP lawyers present.
"An unspecified form of long-term preservation" aka PIRACY.
I may or may not represent a Cayman Islands off-shore data repository.
And that's a wrap. Thank you to fa, yawnoc, and Josh for coming out. As I said to Josh, downtown Oakland is an interesting place.
